Brian Greene - What Was There Before The Big Bang?

  • The American theoretical physicist, Brian Greene explains various hypotheses about the causation of the big bang. Brian Greene is an excellent science communicator and he makes complex cosmological concepts more easy to understand.
    The Big Bang explains the evolution of the universe from a starting density and temperature that is currently well beyond humanity's capability to replicate. Thus the most extreme conditions and earliest times of the universe are speculative and any explanation for what caused the big bang should be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless that shouldn't stop us to ask questions like what was there before the big bang.
    Brian Greene mentions the possibility that time itself may have originated with the birth of the cosmos about 13.8 billion years ago.
    To understand how the Universe came to be, scientists combine mathematical models with observations and develop workable theories which explain the evolution of the cosmos. The Big Bang theory, which is built upon the equations of classical general relativity, indicates a singularity at the origin of cosmic time.
    However, the physical theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics as currently realized are not applicable before the Planck epoch, which is the earliest period of time in the history of the universe, and correcting this will require the development of a correct treatment of quantum gravity.
    Certain quantum gravity treatments imply that time itself could be an emergent property. Which leads some physicists to conclude that time did not exist before the Big Bang. While others are open to the possibility of time preceding the big bang.
    One of the common misconceptions about the Big Bang model is that it fully explains the origin of the universe. However, the Big Bang model does not describe how energy, time, and space were caused, but rather it describes the emergence of the present universe from an ultra-dense and high-temperature initial state. It is misleading to visualize the Big Bang by comparing its size to everyday objects. When the size of the universe at Big Bang is described, it refers to the size of the observable universe, and not the entire universe.

      @Mike Seork The thought that space could potentially be infinite is hard to grasp because humans are hardwired either by nature or nurture to think that everything is finite and has a beginning and an end. Every day use of infinite or it's synonyms are usually not true infinite, so the actual thought of something having no end is impossible to wrap my head around. How would something like that work? How could there never be an end to the size of something? How can something have no beginning, It just exists? Space can't just be "nothing" since we are able to exist in it, it has to be "something". So many questions we may never have answers to. I love learning about space but when we start talking about the starting point or the infinity of the universe, it boggles my mind to the point where I need to go observe some finite things, like my bag of chips coming to an end.

    I think it is important to be mindful that when we ask the question: "What was there before the big bang?" We are basically saying: "What reality existed before the reality we are familiar with?" Which is the space-time continuum. I think scientifically it is almost impossible to answer this question because we are only familiar with our current dimension, we can only especulate about it which is part of our curiosity. Additionally when we ask this question we are always forced to ask: "What was there before that and before that and before that ....etc" which will ultimately always lead to infinitum, something without beginning or end. Can our 3 pound brain ever comprehend that?

    • @bennyjet7
      @bennyjet7 3 года назад +5

      It's not the brain that does the comprehension, that is what keeps eluding them. The brain is yet an finite organ that transmits the consciousness, which is infinite; therefore we need constructs to help with perspective, thus the illusion of space & time- a beginning/end, start/finish, yesterday/tomorrow, etc. There is only a continuation of Now, there has always been and always will be only the Moment.

Consciousness ( a.k.a. awareness, knowledge, information, energy) being infinite means: a substance/matter/entity/a knowing can't be destroyed, only altered into different states. Therefore, it has no end. And logically if something has no end then neither does it have a beginning. If there's anything "conceptual" about all of this is our perspective and perception. If our perspective is based in a 3 dimensional frame, on a multidimensional subject, then our perception will be limited. example: H2O has 3 states of being, liquid, solid, gas. I pour some water into a tray and make ice, the ice melts and evaporates into the atmosphere making water again. Which came 1st? Our perception says "the water" because our perspective was at the particular stage in the cycle, however that cycle had been happening long before we came on to the scene. [I'm not suggesting H2O is infinite, just using it as metaphor of how we tend to view and interact with cycles].

      "Consciousness ( a.k.a. awareness, knowledge, information, energy) being infinite means: a substance/matter/entity/a knowing can't be destroyed, only altered into different states."
      You can't really just say matter/knowing in the same category, they are extremely different things, also, matter can be destroyed, so can a substance, so can an entity, energy is the only thing that can't be "destroyed" and "knowing" is a concept not an actual thing ,and destroying a concept is a nonsensical proposition, its like counting the third side of a circle, even conceiving of that is invalid.
      " And logically if something has no end then neither does it have a beginning. "
      That is not logical, that is flatly and demonstrably wrong. A whole number number line which starts at 0 will never have an end, but the beggining is 0, this assertion is bunk.
      " If our perspective is based in a 3 dimensional frame, on a multidimensional subject, then our perception will be limited. "
      That is a BIG old if right there, and even granting it, we live in 3 spatial dimensions where we DO have perception of the fourth (Time) just fine despite not living on that dimensional frame, making this another assertion with nothing backing it up.
      " H2O has 3 states of being, liquid, solid, gas. I pour some water into a tray and make ice, the ice melts and evaporates into the atmosphere making water again. Which came 1st?"
      Well this is an easy one, because the conditions required for the hydrogen and oxygen to bond is to high for it to be any other state, the h20 had to start as a gas. Its like the chicken or the egg question, it sounds like a smart question, but ultimately it has a definitive answer and scientists aren't curious about it at all.

    • @bennyjet7
      @bennyjet7 3 года назад +4

      @@okaydetar821 lol, i'll leave you with this (cause this can be the primer to the rest) its been proven scientifically that all matter (down to the quantum level and beyond) consist of energy; so if a material substance is destroyed, does it stop existing? I feel your struggle. I once too had disbelief in the intangible, until I had an experience that allowed me to be open-minded (or maybe I was open-minded to having an experience? egg & chicken conundrum) to the awareness that everything (all material substance seen, even unseen) is connected. That "things" being separate and unrelated is an illusion (yet can have a purpose). At that moment "I" became conscious! In spiritualism its called "enlightenment", in computer engineering it would be considered "self-aware" (theoretically with A.I.). So, from that moment on my "concept" of life and death fundamentally changed. If I am a material substance composed of energy at a sub-atomic level, then everything about me is just released back into the universe, at my time of physical decay; thus starting another cycle. I understand the perplexing frustration. It seems as humans we're OK with something going on forever, but it seems to drive us mad when we don't have a starting point. This, I believe is why we need to use the concept of a space-time continuum, which is an illusion (with a purpose) within itself. Question: when you say something to yourself without speaking it out loud, who's doing the talking? Most people would agree that it was "themselves" speaking. "Self" consisting of mind and body. But if you allow your "self" to think outside the box, that would be like saying, "myself is operating a car, therefore I am a car". ~Sincerely, Morpheus

      Furthermore, if the big bang was truly an event that occurred at all, then time and space must have already existed; if not, then there was no time for said event to occur (all change requires time), and no space for it to occur within. Everything is energy and information. Info can be created but not lost, only shared, preserved, and transferred.
      Universes reproduce. 'The BIG Bang-Bit Bang/Supermassive White Hole-Quantum Tunneling Wormhole' inflation-expansion of energy₇₄ and quantum information into the void 13.77 billion-years-ago was spawned by a supermassive black hole at the center of 1-in ~200 billion galaxies in our parent₇₄ universe. This duality combines general relativity’s singularity point₇₄s of infinite density tunneling through energy barriers in ‘Cosmic Egg hatchings’ creating all baby universes in 'The Infinite Conglomerate of Universes': multiverse with no random quantum fluctuation bubble universes, no parallel universes or parallel worlds and all universes have identical laws. Our Universe is 1-of-infinite self-similar fractal offspring each with alike inherited traits/‘DNA’.

SBH-SWH umbilical wormholes are quantum tunneling seed transitions with energy-matter and data transferred, albeit scrambled/garbled and encoded - shuffled. What if instead of the Big Bang there were multiple bangs at roughly the same time? That would explain the current growing size of the Universe and why it's accelerating. Also, what if another Universe existed before the Big Bang, which collapsed thus creating the Big Bang? This could have happened more than once. Additionally, time is a life creation. The Universe does not know time or even care. All things simply exist. Time is irrelevant to physics and the existence of matter since matter cannot be created or destroyed. Matter takes different shapes and forms. That matter that becomes self aware realizes the passage of time. Matter does not.

      (not to mention I never claimed to have one either myself)
      your question illustrates (though it wasn’t your intention) that your “belief” is simply one you’ve been gifted that fills the voids you need to have satisfied.
      The only sincere belief one can have is to start from “I know absolutely nothing for sure” and learn from there.
      That a person thinks “there’s an almighty Man who made it all so” is an “explanation” is embarrassing.

    I've been trying to frame this question and haven't had the appropriate vocabulary for it.
    I'd ask, "Into what did the Big Bang explode?"
    And if the answer was nothing, then, "How did all that nothing get there?"
    How, then, did the singularity form?
    What was the spark that set it off?
    I liked the observation of "the totality of reality."
    That will give me a great deal to toss and turn over.

    That's something beyond any explanation in the language of Science. But it requires an unworldly realization which may give the feeling of our very existence that cannot be described in the language of Science... But Brian Greene mentioned here there might be an existence of something before Big Bang and I think it's true. Actually if u wanna search about the secret of Universe then you've to be a thinker of free entities rather than hardcore mathematical rigorous equation of equities...

    This video at least allows for the most logical & reasonable explaination that if our observable "part" of space was created in part by a "big bang" type event, that we are merrily one small piece of a potentially infinite number of other such events and that where the matter came from was more than likely a collapse from a previous such event and this is how the real infinite universe recycles time and time again. The previously floated idea that the entire universe is only what we can observe is ridiculously naïve, and even then what we can observe is unreliable as well due to all that we still don't understand and may never will until we can get out there., if even then.

    If the universe is finite then so is expansion. The universe can only expand to the point where measurement, observation, or interaction is still possible after which nothing has any definite position in spacetime and therefore can no longer be expanding. It becomes immeasurable which is basically the conditions right before the big bang. It doesn't have to experience a big crunch to reach the same conditions as pre big bang. At which point I suspect that random quantum fluctuations cause another big bang. An eternal cycle happening over and over with every possible outcome occurring and eventually even this universe reoccurring exactly as we see it. Which is in some sense is also a multiverse. If you think about it before any one universe won out every universe was possible. There was truly a state pre big bang where anything and everything was possible. Amazing!

      I think we live in an infinite multiverse and that there are aliens out there that can exceed the speed of light in machines. Anything that your mind can comprehend, I think is possible in other universes. Because humans are not the final step in evolution, we're going to keep evolving up to a point. But even with all this evolution, will humans be able to create a universe? I don't think humans will be capable of or have enough evolutionary time to construct a universe...Artificial Intelligence could since machines live for a long time. However something was there before us and will always be there. That means that 'God' is actually the infinite multiverse because our universe created us. There will be universes that have no life in them, and then there will be universes like ours. So 'God' does stuff randomly, God has no emotions. Clearly religions like Christianity and Islam are silly, Hinduism has it right somewhat but I'm not a Hindu. Hinduism has always mentioned an infinite series of Big Bangs and Big Crunches, and I think it already mentioned the multiverse being possible. Sadly, I don't think there is a God who is all-loving, or actually cares about people, hence why there are natural disasters and stuff. The 'fine tuning' argument doesn't hold weight in my opinion, because if there is an infinite multiverse then we're just lucky to be in a habitable zone in a Solar System in our universe. So the infinite multiverse is God, and it will always be all-powerful and ever existing. If the infinite multiverse DOES have a consciousness and really does care for certain members of its creations, like humans, then that would be a good thing. Sorry if I sound crazy, just my thoughts.

      @@aspiknf I definitely believe our universe is apart of many other universes before it created and destroyed in a continuous cycle with each cycle of billions of multiple trillions of years; furthermore I do believe the multiverse is a pretty plausible thing considering there is so much we don’t know about even our own universe let alone, galaxy and solar system even our own world.
      Although, I do believe without any doubt that there is alien life forms out there; wether that’s intelligent or not it’s extraordinary to think about and even extraordinarily foolish to think there is none out there; I don’t believe based on our laws of physics anyways that they can travel at the speed of light considering mass can move extremely fast with enough power and force but the more mass you have the less close to the speed or light we can achieve.
      I don’t know if humans can create a universe, it’s more of a challenge of intellect or more so a race of intellect if you will; I think it would take longer than our star life from beginning to end to create anything the slightest fraction of the universe. Machines would have to have the intellectual capability to do such a feat, and computers are an input output system so they can only know as much as we allow them to learn and compute; also while computers can “outlive humans”, the earth is facing a certain death in approximately 5 billion years when the sun goes red giant.
      I think the idea of religion and it having an all powerful, all knowing, all loving being comes from us needing sense of relatability and assuming beyond matter that the universe must relate to us on an emotional level; now we know that even though we are made with similar matter emotion comes through development throughout evolution.

  • @okinawagaijin9344
    @okinawagaijin9344 3 года назад +8

    I am firmly drawn to the idea that the big bang is the result of a collapsing star, forming a black hole. As the black hole sucks up immense amounts of matter, inside the hole, hidden behind the event horizon, all matter and space itself condense into a hot, dense mess. At some point, it reaches a critical state and expands (the big bang).
    Time is relative and ticks differently inside the black hole than it does outside of it. Inside, the big bang was the start of time and 13.8 billion years have passed since. Outside, the black hole already existed for a long time and started vaporizing. The moment this black hole fully vaporizes is the same moment our universe inside reaches its "heat death".
    Our edge of the observable universe is the event horizon of a black hole. The mysterious dark matter / dark energy accelerating the expansion of our universe is in reality just the edge of the event horizon pulling spacetime back outwards, like a rug or gum. As more of that limited space is being stretched and pulled to the edge (where it ends up folding and emitting the matter it contains as Hawking radiation or something) the stretch becomes stronger, causing the distance between objects in space to appear to increase as well.
    Light can't reach the ever-expanding edge of our universe in the same way it can't escape a black hole after crossing the event horizon. Because space itself is moving against it at higher speed.
    Imagine a treadmill. Put it to the highest speed and try to keep up. The side the treadmill is moving towards is the inside of our universe / black hole. The side it's coming from is the edge. The rubber band is space itself. No matter if you start running from the inside (trying to reach the edge of our universe) or jump on it from the outside (entering the event horizon from the outside), its high-speed movement will immediately push or pull you towards the inside and prevent you from ever reaching the far end again.
    I think all matter a black hole contains and sucks up during its lifecycle forms the 0,0,0,0 point in the universe it creates. We can't observe new matter entering our universe. So if a black hole is still feeding and sucking up new matter, why doesn't that matter magically enter our universe? I believe that's where the time dilation takes place.
    The birth, life, and death of our entire universe on a timescale only takes place in the very last brief moments the black hole exists. Similar to how people describe seeing their entire life flashing before their eyes in the very moment they die. And when the moment comes that it evaporates, the big bang and the 13.8 billion years and all the rest until it dies off happen "at once".
    A black hole doesn't destroy information. It simply contains it and until it dies, it briefly leaks it out. A bit like "from ashes to ashes". Einstein's theory of relativity works perfectly on a macroscopic scale. Only two instances cause the theory to fail. The singularity that was the big bang of our universe, and the singularity inside the event horizon of a black hole. Two different things that are oddly similar in so many ways.
    Well, that's about my hypothesis, the stuff I made up for myself. Every black hole contains a universe. The black holes cause the big bangs inside those universes. And while billions and trillions of years pass inside the universe contained in such a black hole, not even a second has passed outside.
    I just had to get this off my chest.

      As for the magnitude: Maybe our universe is on a level which has billions of black holes. Inside these black holes are universes with million black holes. Inside those, there are more universes with just tens of thousands of black holes. Maybe we're one universe inside a black hole of a universe with a quadrillion black holes.
      Like, there might be some total limit in the amount of mass and energy of this enveloping system. And each new universe and black hole can only contain a lower fraction of that.
      Since infinity is such a huge scale, it would be hard to tell where on that scale our universe might be.
      But apart from my rambling, I think the fact alone that we live inside a space so huge that we can not (and will possibly never be able to) see the end of it is already mindblowing.

It's much more truthful and far less deceptive, at a personal level, to merely admit that we currently do not have the answers, and indeed may never have them.
      Hypothesising is one thing, but the true nature of the universe may be quite another. Ergo, only strong, testable evidence should ever be sufficient to encourage 'belief' in ANYTHING...and yes, that includes the 'multiverse' you refer to, and especially your claims of so-called 'interdimensinal beings'. Conversely, where there is no hard evidence, then the intelligent person should always adopt the sensible, rational, neutral position of NEVER accepting anything as 'true' unless there are utterly compelling arguments to do so.
      Unfortunately, your muddled view is hardly scientific, and is based on little more than wishful thinking at this precise moment in time. On that basis, I really don't understand why you, or anyone else, would choose to deceive yourself.

    I mean, according to the laws of energy conservation, you cant destroy energy, so I would say energy is so exotic, that it can exist outside space / time. In other words, you rewind it all to the big bang its self, and space time is gone. There couldn't be a "before " if time itself didn't exist at that point we think of as "before" . So, I'm theorizing that energy exists even outside space time. Energy was not created in the big bang, but as soon as the 1st point in space and time was born, there must be a window, between space time, and the energy that existed outside space time. Something during the big bang, acted as a conduit, allowing for energy outside the universe, outside spacetime, to dump into it. My guess is, that a single point in space time, must have an energy limit, a finite amount of energy that is able to be present in a single point of space time. That amount of energy, is constant, and the total energy of the universe now, or any time, must be equal to the amount of energy, the was present in space time, when there was just a single point of space time. At some point in the big bang event, the energy that came into space time must have been sealed off from its source. And no matter what, even if we discover how it works, we cant tap into it, because that would add more energy to our universe, and were not allowed to do that. However, if we could adjust our energy levels to a frequency high enough, we may be able to phase out of our space time, and access this energy outside the universe, allowing us to use that energy, and not violate any laws of physics, since we would be phased out of the universe slightly, in other words, if we could make our own space time, independent of the universe, we may be able to access this energy, much like the big bang, use it for technologies etc. I don't think we know enough yet to dive to deep into this question.

    What I find most interesting is that we live in a world where scientists can hypothesize and explain how the universe can come into being billions upon billions of Sol-Terran years ago without any direct observation or personal experience, but refuse to entertain the existence of a higher power (or even aliens) because they are unable to directly observe or have personal experience. I find that a fascinating part of the human experience.

      Well, they look at evidence, such as the rate of expansion in the universe, to come up with these theories. They use what we can see to give us a clues about what we can't. Whether or not an intelligent higher power exists, there is no evidence to trace to its existence, so it's difficult to create theories pointing to it. Its purely a faith based theory - "well stuff is here so a powerful being created it". And on a seperate note, many scientists do believe in a faith based higher power.

      @@Dozz66 Missed the point of my comment but a valid response nonetheless; however, I did clearly state *hypothesize* not *theorize*. There is a galaxy's worth of difference between the two statuses. Even Einstein's General Relativity Theory is being questioned to this day, despite having evidence to support it, and Einstein's Theory overwrote many of Newton's Laws concerning gravity. Which means it may be only a matter of time before a new Hypothesis comes forward to overwrite Scientific knowledge as we know it. Hopefully it will not include an intrepid, strapping Captain asking "what does god need with a starship."

    To me the Big Bang is just of many that occured before, like a repeated process (circle of "life"). Energy expelled along with any debris does not vanish, but is rather absorbed by the closest system (the universe we know so far), which, in turn, evolved from a prevoius big bang. What is your take on that?

    • @michaeloneil2696
      @michaeloneil2696 3 года назад

      I’m 100% with you. A cyclical process that has occurred countless times previously. Eventually all matter converges and sits there in stasis until it’s disturbed. My current thinking is that instead of a single mass it was two, forming very far apart, and after an unfathomably long period of time they meet and either collide or get close enough to each other that their gravitational pulls rip each other apart super violently and release their potential energies all at once. Makes sense in my head anyway🤷‍♂️…

      @@joax5955 Indeed, it's one of those things where currently, from our perspective, it doesn't make sense and there's no limitation to this expansion. But our perspective may also be very limited, from only able to view the universe in the past to simply not understanding how dark matter works.
      What's not to say that the sudden expansion comes to a halt and reverts, like an elastic band that's fired forward only to contract back to its launch point? Perhaps dark matter or other forces we can't see or understand in terms of gravity on a much larger scale works that way or that there's a limit to the seemingly limitless boundaries of the universe that pushes things back?
      For now though we can only settle on the theory that proves to be the most correct, but it's like settling for a word in a crossword with only a few hints to what the word could be and so far it's our best bet, but there's a ton of other words that could fit into it depending what the rest of it may be.

      The universe is too well atomically balanced to think we could just "Blip" into existence, out of nothing, after an infinity of nothing-ness.It's not possible. So if you extrapolate from there, anything is possible, and that "anything" could have been going on for a larger/longer time than you can wrap your head around. Time can't just start...it has to have always been. There could have been intelligence a trillion to the trillionth power years ago, who didn't know the beginning of it all.So I go for some kind of intelligent design..farming, in a way. What are the fruits of the galaxy? Planet crusts and asteroids ? Nebulae ? Us ? Guess that depends.

      It's not a matter of confidence in that particularly aspect, it's a confidence in the scientific method. We can only trust and deliberate on what we currently believe to be true, knowing full well that every hypothesis could be shattered at any time. If you trust science, you trust the leading theories. For most of human history scientists truely believed the earth was flat. We just repeat what we know to be true until we gain a greater understanding and then we repeat that until something else comes along that is provably a better theory and the wheel turns on and on.
