It´s difficult to describe, and properly honor her greatness.

An astonishingly great performance--she plays with command and authority, and yet with profound sensitivity and depth of expression.

+Donald Wright Agree completely; this is wonderful playing. There are many fine recordings of the work, but this is certainly one of the very best. Her ability to make the theme sing out clearly amidst much thorny passagework is astonishing. So is the way she paces the entire work. Very great playing here.

One of the best recordings of this piece by one of the greatest of Russian pianists. Thanks for making it better-known.

I attended her concerts very often was I was young. She came regularly in Tbilisi. I remember her Prokoviev's 6th Sonata (among others), Beethoven's 5th concerto … Undoubtedly, she (was) is! one of the greatest pianists. She possessed a very particular and noble sound as Yudina and Guilels.

This is a great recording of these symphonic variations for piano. It is important to retieve both the global achitecture of each variation, and the fine details that the genius of Schumann put in it. M; Grindberg does it with authority and ina quite successful manner. This is indeed a great recording.

    Sublime!
...makes me realise how much work has to be done to do such masterfully crafted compositions justice. A feat, I sorely am made aware, I myself could never have reached...
And she makes the notes soar through my mind's heaven, then dipping into the impassioned heat of my blood, and warmed there climb yet again to aural heights, and beyond to angelic sound-clouds and universal harmonies, yet balanced all throughout.

My thoughts exactly when I heard her symphonic studies for the first time, after years of cherishing godly interpretations as that of Sofronitzky, Rubinstein, Richter, Gilels, Brendel, of course... there is just something I cannot describe in words which amazes me every time I listen to her.

Her balance, voicing, effortless handling of Schumann texture etc. is incredible.

A magnificent artist. Why did she never tour outside the U.S.S.R? Of course neither did Yudina or Sofronitsky, both of whom I've come to admire greatly, but frankly Grinberg's Chopin, her Schumann Symphonic Etudes and her Liszt Sonata put in the pantheon with the greatest of the greats. A this point I admire her even more than I do the others. I had first heard a few of her Beethoven sonatas, and was not all that impressed. The interpretations struck me as competent, of course, but rather humdrum -- nothing personal or special that i could hear. THEN I heard her G-Minor Ballade and her Liszt Sonata, and realized I was in the presence of greatness. These Symponhic Etudes, which are stupendous, sealed the deal once and for all.

Who was permitted a career outside the USSR was entirely up to the Soviet authorities. ... look at Lazar Berman.... he was, finally, allowed to tour abroad.... then he was found with a proscribed book. It is our loss that the Soviets were poor with their sound engineering and recording capabilities. This woman is quite something else. Yet there are few recordings, production wise, that permit us to really hear what she was doing.

    • @MathieuPrevot

It seems to me that she suffered at least a double penalty: being a soviet artist forbidden to tour outside, and being a woman in a misogynist (to a certain degree) environment. Her political color may have also affected her career.

One of the greatest Russian pianists. Her recording of the entire Beethoven piano sonata cycle is perhaps her greatest work - it is far superior to the cycles of lesser pianists. What a shame that she was impoverished all of that part her life during which Stalin ruled the USSR with bloody hands. This, as with all of her recordings, is gorgeous. Many great pianists published recordings in which they seemingly "took a day off". Maria Grinberg never stooped so low. When she recorded a work she put her soul into it.

+pianolady516 Yes! Thanks to RUclips we discover at least one new one every few days. I'm almost 75 years old, have studied music seriously all my life, earned degrees from two top conservatories, but have to say I've learned more about pianists and the piano literature since I discovered RUclips several years ago than in all the years before. The broad range of possible interpretations for works known for decades is at once both eye opening and tremendously liberating. This performance is particularly great.

Quite authoritative performance, where she makes quite evident her technical and musical mastery, her great piano knowledge, with just one blemish, in the last page. She allows herself to do what many pianists also do: to play the last descending line, as if it were written: "doppio movimento subito e accellerando sine al fine (sudden double speed and accellerando till the end)", something that was not written nor intended by Schumann, that completely destroys the rhythmic structure and sense of the last variation, in favor of absolutely nothing. Quite regrettably, for this proceeding contrasts very deeply with everything she did before this last page.
