The Tom Tom Club debut is pure joy.
Back in my younger days, this song sounded like a masterpiece when really high. Chris, you can still see the love he has for his wife after all thses years.
tina and chris are a rare breed.....
she loathes him
Mr J-Charles They’ve been happily married since 1978.
Love ❣️ off music ends up classic 🤣🤣
I have a deep love for his wife as well :)
This fantastic song electrifies me today just like when I first heard it!
Hearing about how it came about is wonderful, thank you.
I was so proud of myself when I memorized every word of the wordy rappinghood when it was released
Damn right you were - that was an accomplishment! :)
That's cool 🎶👋😭😂
What a waste of brainpower,to memorize song texts.
I bet you are regretting it now..
You could have memorized Al lot of things that would have brought you're live to prosperity...
It is like the song..what are words worth.
NOTHING....
@@ronaldvanleeuwen8337 This song’s lyrics wouldn’t fill up their brain lmao
That's a lot of dialogue. You've a good memory.
"That way they won't be mad at us for having no ideas" LOL! She is just wonderful! I love this song...had no idea of the background, so cool!!
YEP.....VERY COOL
GENIUS OF LOVE is a critical part of rap history. That beat and groove influenced so many songs from the grandmasters to Mariah.
@CommieBash Why not? We're not delusional as a race of people. We have memories and can look up information if the main event happened before our time. I happened to remember it I was either in high school or college when this song came out. I purchased the cassette tape.
Take a look on Wikipedia at all the songs that have sampled Genius of Love.
@@axepagode33626 right! Art is art.. rhythm is rhythm, call it like it is. 80s were a grand time for crossing genres and pushing the envelope no matter from where.
One of the best songs of the 80's in my book. Still sounds as fresh, especially in this barren musical climate of auto tune crud.
I love them as a couple, what a great partnership on all levels.
Astounding interview and talented band... what a great era!
Love Tom Tom Club...still! ❤️
All these years since I first heard that song I was wondering what those words meant
this is freaking fantastic !!‼️
For all those folks thinking this song is trash, this track is a groove and still slaps harder than a mofo. At least its honest to itself.
People who think this song is trash are rhythmically and harmonically handicapped. Luckily for them, due to their disability, they will never realize what they're missing ;-)
Peace
This song is pure gold. A timeless classic. I remember hearing it for the first time way back when and just being blown away at how original and awesome it was.
@@jeffedmisten6576 facts. If you know, you know 🍻
I don't understand how anyone could not like this.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT THIS IS BRILLIANT GENIUS, ANY ONE DON'T LIKE IT CAN CUNTING SUCK STD COCK !!!!!!!!!!! YEAH FOCK OFF RUDE BWOYS....AND GIRLS !!!!!!

I bet!
This song was inescapable back in the day. Original. Fun. Demented. Slammin!
I have this LP, whole thing is a crazy mish mash of fun. It's quirky and weird but it grows on you.
if you like a crazy mish mash of fun, go play "Super Heavy" Which is from Super Heavy. Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley, and A.R.Rahman. It's a rock, rasta, some indian mix with joss stone singing. It was one of the coolest albums I ever heard.
This is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much. I am so glad I grew up with so much wonderful music.
Genius of Love was my 80's playing the 12 inch on cassette
i still play genius of love in the club well i did before covid hopefully get to play it again soon
I revisited this song recently in 2024 after... a lonnngg time. I missed how dope this song is when I 1st bought the album.
So dang happy that we got to hear and see Tom Tom Club in person during the Escape From NewYork tour. It was in Cleveland. Blondie and the Ramones also performed but Tom Tom Club and Jerry Harrison's band took the cake. Thanks Tina and Chris. Thank you!
the track is gold!
What a fine album
That was some brainstorm!
This record is dope
The 1st commercial rap record (rapper's delight) was released only 2 years before this and was thought to be a fad that would fade away. This guy was thinking WAY outside the box in asking her to do this.
Sweet couple and lovely insight into the origins of the song. Be well, y'all!
Loved this song back in
81 still in 21
Bad ass jam.
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY.
Didn't know what to expect but I loved it...superb
Love it. So nice to see you both. Posting to your Group. Xx
What a cute story from this highly original band with their undisputed spontaneous masterpieces! 😍
Wow, just watched them on Colbert the other night. And decided to do a little memory lane and ended up here. After allllll these years, I had no idea these guys were a couple. Or apparently that Tina spent time in France as a kid. But hey, glad I lived through that era. Damn, I'm glad.
Quirky song from the 80s a decade that had it all in music
justmadeit2 especially if you ever came as a nerd with all the statistics of words, that's why there a dictionary, but Tina didn't use a dictionary. LOL!!!!😆
@Java Monsoon I always loved Havana Club but I often feel dizzy and confused after...
Love them both so much.
I have always loved this song it's like my favorite one love listening to it really loud makes me giggle and puts me in a happy mood..
Tina is up there in the Top 10 Bass players of all time.
Yes.
Tina, Jean jacques, Roger waters, Pino Palladino, Robbie Shakespear, Russell Jackson, Verdine White, Mark King, Alan Thompson, were 'all in a grove' ;)
@@DeePaignall Mick Karn and Jaco Pastorius were great too.
Always been surprised by her glance and concentration on stage.
Just came across this band. Love it!
They are such a great couple.
in his book, David Byrne says he was always envious of Chris Frants's 'unfeasably large penis'
Hip sounding 🎵 song in the 80s. First time I heard it was at the club ...........God bless y'all, 🙌 please 🙏 stay safe ✝️
Great track, was very big in the UK.....
I’m never going to meet a woman like Tina. She has her head on straight.
@@Bikewithlove - No, your reply did not lift my spirits. It brought me down more.
I will delete these comments - I don't need this kind of negativity in my life.
I was just a 10 y/o boy when I heard this song though I neighbour, I instantly loved the song and was dancing like crazy
Doo you have any clue how cool you were in 1982? And still are now? God love you. Cubby bear chicago/first night front center (sorry for putting out motorcycle hermits on the stage..) you were awesome. Never forget.
Dream life! Love it!
Wow. Amazing 👍
Tina is a BABE! The way Mr. Frantz stares at her at 4:49 is awesome, you can see he is so proud of her.
RL R They started seeing each other in ‘76 during production of Talking Heads ‘77. Both were YOUNG. Chris was 24, Tina was 25. They were married on February 11,1978. They have a Daughter, born in ‘79(She appears at the beginning of the Talking Heads Video Road To Nowhere) and son born in August 1985.
I love this song !
I love this. I have always loved word speak in music lol. Not rap. But like CAKE and his amazing almost monotone like grizzly warm voice. So awesome.
great-love the album
All these years and I had no idea that was an African chant? Now I love this song mor3 than I already did! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🎼🎵🎶🎵❤️
That was everything 🙌
Toppie liedje!
Iv been a fan of this song since the 80's
Super cool!
Just to be able to come close to remembering that...holy yeah!
One of my top 50.
i love it again and again
This was the summer of 81. I was 12. I dug it then, and dig it now.
The synths on this track are (mixed) awesome(ly) (similar to their "The man with the four way hips", from the album 'Off the bone'...yes I'm an admirer).
Summer 82: Bingo again: Genius of love...
I got nuttin' but love for you Tomtommers.
They are an inspiration.
What a great piece of music - it's FNU! (and what's missing in much of today's music).
Introduced to this single now! 😂❤
I never liked this song too much but I still have to admit their music had a big influence on hip hop as a whole. Specifically “Genius of Love”
Actually Hip Hop had a big influence on their music.
DRAVIDIAN718QUEENSNY I wish if they will explain of that song ad well, hip hop and r and b artists had been pro gramme sampling. I kind of like it
Love that song 💕

Damn, I forgot about this song, I remember liking it!!!!!!
I love a song of theirs that came out in the early 90s. It's called Daddy Come Home.
Features bagpipes and dream- like lyrics.
Daddy's Home by Cliff Richard is even better
When this song hit. They played this song every 11 minutes on the top-20 radio stations.
It is a great song to sample.
Plain genial .
I love this song!! Best ever, words....we all use them! And on the live virsion is off the chain they get down!!!!
Fascinating.
Tina is beyond cool!
Wordy Rappinghood and Genius of Love were great and sadly their best!
Is that sadly your best opinion?
Try digging deeper eg.
On and on, Suboceana,
Who's Feeling it..
@@iconicshrubbery Yes I stick to my opinion. They had crappy vocals.
More like a sad close minded opinion. Man
@@discodirk48 Stop obvious trolling.
They have a song called "Pleasure Of Love" and it blows EVERYTHING out of the water.
@@trendydelquendy Sounds reductive and again I find their vocals weak. But if you like it great!
Such an awesome story!
I love it nee kee gee!
what a great story.
I devoured this album!!!
Cool story about the roots of an epic song by the TOM TOM CLUB
rebjiii can you imagine what would have become of their music if they were still in The Talking Heads?
@@hgone7221 what are u trying to say ? Tom Tom Club was better than the Talking heads ?
rebjiii without doubt. Tom Tom Club was operating within Talking Heads all along!!!
@@hgone7221 Tom Tom Club were a cute novelty act with a few excellent songs.....Talking Heads are in the Rock n roll hall of fame and have influenced hundreds of other bands .....Tom Tom Club have been free to record additional songs and albums since the Talkimg Heads broke up in 1990.....if Chris and Tina have music to make & release - nothing has stopped them these past 30 years
@Jon N Yep......David Byrne is brilliant.......Tom Tom Club was a cute little side project Chris and Tina......I saw the Talking Heads once in concert while they were on the Stop Making Sense tour.....I still contend it was the best concert I ever attended - I've probably been to 200 concerts
I think that chord influenced Need You Tonight by INXS and Flawless by The Ones.
Chris is so respectful of his wife here.
Mí época genios❤❤❤
There's only a dozen or so bands and a solo artist here and there that sound like they made-up their own variation on the New York Hip Hop genre while others sound like they're really struggling to get a handle on it and mimicking another.
and that´s how you write songs :), even poems and scripts for plays and movies ;).
the most best song a bout miss comunication (ive spelt everythi wrong)words.
Brilliant and funny.
I heard this song YEARS ago and I thought it sounded stupid.
Turns out it was made by my future inspiration.
Transcendental words 😍
I must have danced to this until I blacked out in the streets of Detroit Waving Popping, Funkateering talk about an obsession this is MY SHIT. On another note I cant believe something so goofy and nonsensical blew my mind, I guess with a dope beat anything is possible.
cool
She's wrong though: the "macadam" child's song is not from Africa. It's a typically European marching song, quite commonly known among scouts. It's not meaningless either. Macadam is a sort of tarmac/road pavement and the song is about the rhythmic sound your shoes make when they hit the hard tarmac while walking on it.
Sorry but you are wrong: It is a Moroccan children song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Ram_Sam_Sam Yes it is used by boy scouts in Europe but that does not make it European.
dig it too
A few digs at David Byrne in the lyrics!
MoDebris60 She’s a Hardcore Tomboy.

Back in the day, I worked for Greenpeace. When we were canvassing the particular town they lived in (In Connecticut) they had a reputation for being super cool and generous with donations.
And you were all over em like white on rice you greedy

Wow, her two sisters virtually co-wrote it!

What are words worth? Words!
Oh,,, Just so talent free. And totally unaware. I truly wish I could be in that club. Absolute bliss it would be.
if you reached the pinnacle in your craft you can realize 'silly things like these. would've been different if they weren't part of one of the most respected and talented bands ever. it's like Picasso scribbling stuff you cannot even recognise as art, but a true artist has the freedom to 'unlearn' and be amateurish again. Gorillaz have a very successful career with this approach, takes a lot of talent to create this kindof stuff, wouldn't stand the test of time if 'silly' was the only aspect of it
@@escaton74 "Talented bands ever" ? Pinnacle of your craft? HaHa,,, What craft is that? It certainly isn't musicianship. Sam Cooke was talented. Jimi Hendrix was talented. This is just a very clear window into the very average mind of the American music consumer and what appeals to them if their "peers" suggest quality. Horribly simplistic, and not in a good way. Indeed silly at best. Art is subjective. I will never make a value judgement of someone based on their interpretation of the quality of "art" they enjoy, but I will reserve the right to say the Talking Heads, and Tom Tom folks are at best crap. And,,, that's just me.. I'm sure some art I enjoy would be viewed as crap...
I think she was part of The Talking Heads band.
She was the bassist
darkchild00 BOTH Chris and Tina were.
Tina Weymouth is a great but nerdy genius just to know the way to use dictionaries with the song. when my father brought the tomtom club album with all the punk funk reggae cartoons on there which the song genius of love hits all the b- boy and b- girl knew the tomtom club for. at first. I thought they came from england because of culture, and the music empire ever come close to rule the while world and that's why founders amd records makers like Chris Blackwell. I mean thanks to him. now I get the whrxsyory of words rappinghood,at first i thought it was a guy. thanks . pleasure of love is one of favorite and I love the cartoon video of that. can you please do the behind the song genius of love.
😊😊😊😊😊♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Wow, I always thought this song sounded like childish gibberish. Little did I know, it really is.
Lighten up buddy. Gibberish can be fun.
Love open minded women.
