A New England-style home in Hawthorn had a lot of interest at auction, with its high-pitched slate roof, dormer windows and red clinker brickwork. However, like many homes of its time, it was a collection of small rooms, making spending time as a family difficult.
So the owner, Dawei, hired Melbourne-based architecture practice Chan Architecture to design a renovation and extension that would give them access to natural light and have a single, large family room where they could gather together. All while creating a seamless transition between the old and new, having the minimalist modern extension feel like part of the existing house.

the shot from the backyard with the palm tree in the backdrop is so good
Beautiful house! I really appreciate the presentation of this house in the video, letting us have a really nice idea of how it is laid out and looks. I find a lot of architecture videos on facebook are weak in this area. The inclusion of floor plans is really great for connecting the space up and imagine it!
Thank you so much for the kind words and assessment of my videos! Really means a lot to hear I might finally be getting these right haha.
Love the skylight above the kitchen that floods the space with natural light. And the wider shelter/roof outside the living room to help block the harsh Australian midday sun. Seems like really clever design.
Great job. Nice to see the plans 👏
Very nice transformation. Great job.
Amazing house!
Wonderful!
LOVELY
Would have liked to see a bit of the interior before the transformation...it helps to better appreciate the "after."
I'll see if I can get some to include in the website article. You're right, seeing the 'before' makes you go 'wow' that little bit more.
The right way to design a home!
I saw your other comments critiquing other homes on the channel, so I'm curious to hear from your perspective, what makes this design 'the right way to design a home'?
Not having a go, or being defensive, genuinely curious to hear your thoughts.
@@SimpleDwelling Thanks for your reply. To expand on my comments… I think that some homes are overly complicated and ornate (though some call this appreciation to craft). There are so many details, and therefore, some designs look cluttered without simplicity.
Modernity should have qualities of efficiencies in construction. I can see that some trends in design and construction are more about self-indulgence, big budgets and a waste of time and effort. It drives up cost and pillages the earth.
Awesome glazing!
It just floods the extension with light!
@@SimpleDwelling yes! Absolutely, beautiful!
The extension has this clean line effect to it. Like also how they proportions the furniture the wide space it created. The courtyard has d calming effect u need when u also is an artist. The nafural lights coming from all angles r warm
It has some Mies Van Der Rohe vibes! It’s just a welcoming and lovely space.
@@SimpleDwelling less is more vibe from him. Got it!
