I prefer the casual style of this video. It's like you're talking directly to us, which makes it feel intimate. I also like seeing the city you're in (Amsterdam, right?) and your handsome face. But the animations in the other video do make the actual topic somewhat easier to understand. Perhaps a mixture of the two would be best, basically this video interspersed with occasional graphics to demonstrate the important points. No music either; it's a bit distracting. I guess the animation is better for drawing in new viewers though. Whatever you decide, I'll keep watching. :)

fischX not the point. it's mostly just that 0-100 correspond to comfortable temperatures for living as 0-100 correspond to freezing and boiling of water in °C.
Generally, when you do this in reality, you split up how it feels into groups of 5 or 10.

I did watch both videos, and while I feel the animated version is better at getting the point across from an educational standpoint, this version felt more like a conversation; it felt as though we were engaged in a discussion. Because of this, this video triggered different thoughts and opinions in my own mind, furthering my understanding. Over all, i found both to be captivating and enjoyable, and would like to thank you, Derek, for continuing to create fun, interesting, and educational content like this. :)

i think the animated version is better for people unfamiliar with science, it feels almost like it it is aimed at children. the animations demonstrate what your saying exactly and leave no room for the viewer's mind to further think on the topic, you force the viewer to think and interpret the words in only one way. that being said i like the vlog style better because it doesn't feel like im being talked down to, like we are having a conversation. it allows me to explore what you are saying in my imagination and i can bring my own understanding to the subject. the visuals have nothing to do with the topic and frees the brain to only concentrate on one input, sound, your words.

The animated one is better for educational purposes. However, I've come to love your walking vlogs where you seem like you're telling an interesting story while in the middle of a casual walk. So which is better? Well, it depends on the situation.

As someone with attention disorder - I liked animated version more. It kept me more focused what you were talking about.
Of course this time it was also easier to focus because I knew most of the story you told.
This was kinda easy story to follow so casual way isn't too bad.. Like when you told that war plane example in other casual video. When things get more complicated the animation is the better way.
Also I like when you casually just talk to us like one of those really good school teachers.

I watched this first, and am now making my way through the animated one. Already a minute in I feel like this off the cuff version conveys more of the minutia surrounding each point in the story, projecting a broader picture - giving my mind hooks to grab on to which lets me follow along a lot more easily in the story. I have always preferred teachers to books, I feel like text - even if it's read out loud - can't convey thoughts and ideas as well as intonation, tangents, body language and other subtleties of speech and conversation can.

I like the causal and relaxing video of the walking video in contrast to the animated one.

    I liked both videos
this one is particularly nice because you did it all in one take, almost like you're rehearsing (what you said in both videos is almost exactly the same) and this brings warmth to the way it's being presented. As if you're story telling.
Visuals on the other video make it seem more scientific rather than a story, it also helps a bit to stay focused and not sidetracked by thoughts (or pedestrians in this video).

Thanks Derek. I enjoyed both, but for me the non-animated one is best; It's more personal and more real-world, especially if you're gone through all the trouble, cost and extent to travel to a location pertinent to the topic. Additionally, the location shots are highly interesting and culturally informative even though it's "background". A cool snapshot of "a moment in the life of...". Further, there are so many animated videos that, to me, they seem get lost among each other. I do however appreciate the animations created for the previous videos on fields. Those, to me help convey more useful information about the topic.

  • @playingshadows123
    @playingshadows123 7 лет назад

The editing, little jokes in the visuals and extra information in the animated video was helpful to stay focused and absorb the information better. But the rhythm of speech in this video also helped in absorbing the info, whereas the animation in the other one made it possible to pack more words per minute of video. I also liked looking at the surroundings of the place that you were walking through when you were speaking.
Basically, both styles would work for me. The animated one felt a little like CGP Grey's videos, since he does fast-talking animated videos, but for both, they were interesting.

Hi Derek. As a long time viewer, I enjoy both versions. In general I think the animated video is more approachable to an outsider and thus better introduction content. Overall, I think the two channel approach is great, especially when each is optimized for its purpose. Best, --A

I found the animated version better for the topic as it providing relevant visual information to engage with, which helps memory recall. This style seems more fitting for the theme of 2veritasium ... the videos that are more commentary and opinion, rather than the teaching-themed videos on the veritasium channel. I prefer the way you traditionally have presented things on that channel, but not so much the animated technique of the last video. I watched both and enjoyed this one more. When I pass it along to others, I'll send the link to the animated one. Visuals are helpful in many ways. But as a long time fan, I enjoyed the scenery and the thoughts of your lifestyle that this video evoked. And perhaps most of all, I was impressed by your delivery of the whole lesson, presumably without a prompter or cue cards. I know its just six minutes, but still. There was no hesitation, shuffling of the order, misquoting of dates, etc. Maybe you had at least an outline in your right hand with the camera. Yeah, that would make me feel a little better! :-)

Either way, an interesting and informative video, as usual!

  • @gribushkino

I like both of your channels. It seems to me that for topics where you tell a story or speculate on things, the "walking" style suits better. When you explain things, graphics help a lot, making things easier to understand. The question is hard. Having seen the animated version first, I think that I caught the information better with it, then the repeat on a more informal way was a very good nailing of the knowledge. I'm not at all sure I would have recalled more by inverting the order.

I watched both, and while I normally almost prefer these casual walking videos, I actually found the animated version easier to follow and understand. I found it much easier to absorb and I could probably teach what I learned to others. Not in FULL detail of course, but I could probably teach more of what I learned from the animated version than from this non-animated version because I have visuals that went along with everything. With this walking video, I have distractions due to all of the interesting things to look at.
So I think that these more casual walking videos should be reserved for when you're just kinda speaking from the heart and the animated stuff like the video on your main channel should be reserved for when you have something prepared. When you're speaking more from the heart, I don't find the stuff around you to be distracting. Instead, I can find myself looking at the things around you while my mind is totally focused on what you're saying. With this particular video though, it was a prepared lesson and so I think these are best with some sort of visual aids like in the animated version.

  • @HeavySpiral
    @HeavySpiral 7 лет назад

The Animated version is easier for various reasons, one of them being cleaner sound (which makes listening to it almost effortless and there is no strain, like trying to focus on the sound of a voice while ignoring the sounds from the environment, which we are good at but still it puts some strain) another one is the idea of cartoons and animation which makes is that much easier to digest since we have grown up with cartoons and it has a certain element in it an element that makes you enjoy it more. So in sort, one is more human like (most people can relate to it as it is everyday like) while the other one is trimmed and neat. One presents a more down to earth scientist that looks approachable while the other ones gives the idea of a more serious and respected scientist and quality work (as ideas are easier presentable with animations much like the TED ed videos) also let's not forget that in this video the viewer can feel like having a conversation with you while the other one lacks a "face".

The math was easier to follow on the animated video because you could refer to the picture rather than having to keep everything in the mind.
But the animated video felt more detached / disconnected. I like being able to see your facial expressions as you tell the story. It makes it more personal and I get some idea of how you are thinking as you speak.
    That said I enjoyed both.

In terms of educational purpose, animated version is better because it can highlight the key terms. But the walk-and-talk version really gives me the scenery of some countries which I may never visit in my whole live.
I prefer the animated one as I want to learn some science from your channel. I still enjoy the walk-and-talk one. I think that you may use the walk-and-talk style when you want to speak about your thoughts, feelings or casual ideas.

I've seen both versions but I prefer this one due to the fact that I can see that beautiful city. I'd rather see an awesome place than an animation.

I always find myself paying more attention to what the people are doing in the background than what Derek has to say. People's reactions to vlogging are funny.

While the animated video was well done, I prefer the walk and talk. I think my preference is because there are a lot of people doing animated science videos these days, and the more natural, conversational feel of these strikes a chord. I can understand how the background noise would make listening more difficult for some people, but there are very few RUclipsrs who have chosen to live your lifestyle and could do these walk and talks through the appropriate locations.
I guess I'll make my official opinion that the animated videos have potential for adding to more pure scientific topics, but with something like science history the sense of place adds a dimension that helps hook the story into the overarching development of how we know what we know. Of course, this relies on being in the right city to do make the video, and would not have been as strong in, say, Seville. That would have to be a story about the discovery of platinum and other things that Antonio de Ulloa was involved with.

I actually really enjoyed seeing both videos. I don't really have one that I prefer, but I reckon the first one will be taken more seriously. You can see there was put a lot of effort in it, not only the visuals but you also recognize the fact you had to find lots of information to make it. This video (without the first one) might seem like you're just walking around and happened to discus about something that was in your mind.
    Anyway, very interesting videos!
Also, if you read this, how is your "policy" on people approaching you? I know that if I see Grey I will just have to pretend to not have seen him and continue with my life, Brady I can maybe talk with if he has the time, at least shake his hand and tell him I appreciate his work, but I'm not sure about you. As you're in my country now, this question just hit me. :)

For most of the animated video, I don't feel that the animation added much of concrete value. However, it did help when you spoke of dividing the scale in half, half again, and half again. Visually seeing it animated helped. But I also feel that one human talking to another has a powerful effect on teaching. The best videos combine the two, using animation (sparingly) to illustrate a concept that is better communicated visually than verbally, but relying on eye contact and gestures for most of the explanation.

im a fan of minute physics and enjoy the animation including the little "humorous" bits. As a visual learner it helps to show pieces of info for example the map part of the story

As a fan, I like this version (especially since you are walking around a a cool city), but I find the animated version more sharable. The animated one was easier to understand when doing the math(s) too.

I think the animated version is much more attention-grabbing, and much more fun to watch. It gives you images to associate with the narrative. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

I personally like this one better. Despite my deep and abiding love of Minute Physics and CGP Grey, and my absolute agreement that animation is fantastic for presenting certain concepts (as it's used in Crash Course videos, for example), I'm not typically a huge fan of fully animated videos. Having said that, though, I'd watch anything you put out, so you do you, man. :-)

Since you're walking in my town, I'd say the non-animated version.
Plus, it seems more natural to me.

Why does it bug me so much that people kept staring at us? Is this an innate response adapted for survival (staring = threat = uneasiness), or is it just because I've always been taught that it's FUCKING RUDE!

Rømer actually never intended to make 22.5 body temperature a reference point. This about it, 22.5 works out to well below body temperature on his scale if 60 degrees is boiling. 22.5 was just a shortened version of this thermometer because you didn't need a thermometer to go all the way up to 60 to measure air temperature. Fahrenheit was apparently just mistaken that Romer was using body temperature as a reference and so that's what he did.
