- In today’s video, we discussed our thoughts and some facts debunking the food plot seed myth that food plot seed needs coating. We believe it’s a big money grab and a complete waste of customers hard earned dollars. We do not sell any products with coated seed here at Northwoods Whitetails.

You're spot on, John! Math doesn't lie. LOL
Yep
Thanks John. You are the best source for food plot seed in the industry. I just received my spring seed order from you and thanks for sharing all your expertise. Looking forward to frost seeding clover in March(SW Wisconsin). The deer loved your clover/chicory mix last year.
@@robertstockton2036 Thanks
We just try to bring honest and factual information to folks.
Glad you like it, thanks for the business and good luck.
John, would you do a video on the different herbicides that you talk about? I am fairly new to this and do not feel like I know enough about the different products and when to use them.
Yes
We can
Great video. I believe you and Jake are some of the most honest/sincere people in this industry right now! If you ever fear that you are being corrupted by the money and endorsements, please look back at this video as a benchmark -
I’m good
I’ve seen what it does to people and I want no part of it.
Great info John! I didn't know a thing about coatings or seed tags until I started watching your channel. I learned that the grass seed I bought for my lawn was 60% coating! No wonder my lawn was spotty!
Your Sweet Feast brassicas are still pulling in the deer here in NY. I have anywhere from 20-40 deer each evening digging through the snow to get to the bulbs.
Any they are not coated
Such awesome information and a great easy to understand explanation on the difference John!
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative video John, backed up with truth!

Great video. Thanks so much for the info.
Thanks john
Which of your products would you recommend for frost seeding in NY and southern Ohio? Can I frost seed switchgrass or HD screen? The switch we drilled in last June had a rough start with no rain so it’s about 12”-18” tall. Limited time and money I’m only frost seeding. Thank you!!!
Clovers and switchgrass ( on well
Prepared ground) can be frost seeded
HD screen can not be
Great information vid. 👍
Needed information for sure
I considered buying some perennial clover/chicory from a box store out of convenience... the one in the clear tub. was 33% inert matter and claimed to be perennial but only the chicory was perennial, the clover they put in their mix was annuals... safe to say i ordered some seclusion 360 and wont be going anywhere else.
People should understand what they are spending money on.
And not listen to big buck personalities
Great info John!
Thanks Randy
I bought some summer soil builder from you last year and was surprised to see the sorghum seed had a treatment. It appeared that it was treated with something that was concerning to birds and wildlife. That's not what I like to put out there so I had to go find some non treated seed from Albert Lea this year.
That is why we highly recommend to burying that seed. As well as the Milo and screen.
It’s in the directions
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 I understand that but there is no way you can ever bury 100% of the seed even if you tried. It's easy enough to source non treated seed, why not just go that route?

In a year of seed shortages companies can stretch the seed supply by coating the seed and reducing the seed count in the bag. Seed coating can be a marketing strategy but it’s not necessarily a scam. Buy your seed from someone you trust and you’ll be ok.
Great presentation John, but seedling vigor is what can make a difference. Germination and plant survival is 2 different things. In a stress year, low vigor plants will not have the root system to make the plant survive. Do your own research and look at final stands. Check plant growth, not just plant count. Plant a side by side plot using the variety, treated and untreated, over multiple locations , at suggested planting rates and practices and compare them over a few years. Coating is controversial for sure, but there’s more to it than just the math of the label. Field testing is how you compare.
2 pounds vs 4 pounds is a huge difference at the same price.
We have partners and customers doing side by side a lot.
There is a lot of folks paid a lot of money to make claims and talking points. If we had issues, we would have seen it already.
The math is clear and seed coatings may not be all they are cracked up to be.
Seeding vigor on 2.25 pounds vs 4 pounds is still
A huge difference.
Again it goes back to the seed company. Selling 2lbs of seed and saying it’s equivalent to 4 lbs is a little drastic. Coatings won’t improve germination but may improve seedling vigor in stress years. If the seed count in the bag of the coated seed was equivalent to the count in uncoated or close to it, you wouldn’t feel like your getting scammed. Too often though companies try to cover up poor germ seed or they’ve got nothing to sell. If I had a choice, I’d go with the best germination and take my chances. Luckily I just plant food plots and don’t have to worry about feeding a couple hundred cows.
Most of the seed by that other company, I am not a fan of in the least. They sales tactics seem funny to me as they do a buy 2 get one for a penny. Something else that kills me is its still labeled for a 1/2 acre with half the seed needed... I see so many people supporting and defending coating and it just boggles my mind. Im just curious as to why seed coating is only hitting a few seed types and not all...
Lot of people are mislead…..
Others are paid quite well to mislead 🤷🏼♂️
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 that 2nd statement is what bothers me the most.
I believe that coating is dehydrated water... just add water
It’s expensive
You get less seed
And useless in a drought
Mic drop 🎤
So you're saying is your your clover is better than the whitetail institute clover
I am saying 4 pounds of our clover is equal to 2.25 pounds of a company with seed coating and 1.56 after 2 years per their seed tags.
No one mentioned names 🤷🏼♂️
It's kind of obvious without mentioning names
@@dwainegaransi938just saying those are the facts per seed tag
