Growing switchgrass for deer habitat.
WV dry as the surface of the moon. Yesterday storms roll through and we are in a strip of NOTHING. Pouring on both sides of us. Maddening.
Been about the same here
Kalamazoo was absolutely brutally dry. Finally getting some rain. 🙏🏻
lol. I bet these “ Big buck” seed companies just love all your great videos. 😂 Keep on pushing John. 👊🏻
If the truth offends them, then ya, I guess so
This stuff is absolutely incredible!! Planted on August 10th and is knee high with your clover underneath. Best hands down!!
Thanks John
Great factual content. Your clover seed blend I switched too in 5 of my 7 plots are doing well despite the drought here in southern MI. A bit of rain hitting us today. I had to sew rye in the other plots to cover the fall/winter, but your blend goes in them this spring. after green up.Thanks again
John, can I overseed an established clover plot with chicory, or am I wasting money? Will the chicory germinate?
As long as it’s not too thick the chicory should grow. Even waiting and frost seeding it can work.
John, great video, thank you for the update. I plan to add medium red clover to fill in an existing oats plot, followed by a rye overseed. We sre, like most, in a drought in northcentral PA. Should I wait for rain or plant now, as it's mid September and rain should be in the near future?
Plant with rain if it’s next 3 weeks
Thanks so much for your prompt response.
Hi John, on my 80 in North Central Wisconsin I added a new 1.5 acre plot which I limed, fertilized and planted with NWS Green Forage Blend souped up with a bit of berseem clover and very light radish and brassicas. Knowing the first year soil wouldn't be the best and at the time we were in a consistent rain pattern, I planted the new 1.5 acre plot around July 10. It turned out great. Given how rain tapered off after mid-Aug, I'm glad I planted when I did. I overseeded light spots with cereal rye about 3 weeks ago. Deer have been hitting it hard every night (my first hunt of the year will be this evening so I'm excited to sit the new plot/new box blind). I know overly mature plants are not the desired outcome and I know July can often be dry but perhaps part of a solution maybe to for folks to be ready to plant 3-4 weeks sooner than they normally would be and if on July 5 for example there are 2-3 good rains forecasted over a 10 day period, get the seed in the ground. By not starting to watch the forecast until late July / early Aug, as you mention, a fall drought could really hamstring any chance for much growth. I guess it's a matter of balancing the downsides of overly mature plants, more active weed growth and historically drier summer months. What are your thoughts on planting 3-4 weeks earlier than normal if good rains are forecasted?
With green forage it may not be a problem except the oats may be tall
Great topics covered. I got my clover/ chicory blend from you planted friday with a good rain on it Saturday. Added some rye as a nurse crop and had a some annual arrowleaf clover left over from the spring that will act as a nurse crop also. looking forward to it taking off next spring!
Great plan
On decent soil that holds moisture, can you spay imox end of july, then seed rye in early sept. And get germ in your clover plots. Its the residual im worried about. My last mow is usually end of july, but smart weed creeps in, usually 3 foot clumps and stangles clover and chic. Would like to spray one last time end of july??
I’ve not sprayed Imox then seed rye
I am glad I bought some of the seeds in the cute plastic containers. The containers come in handy for any excess seed I get from you that I plan on saving for next year!
@@toddweston2840keep in a consistent climate like in the house in a sealed container. Yang works for us
Great info as usual! Thank you. You reaffirmed what I was thinking to combat our yearly fall drought , changing over plots to clover & chicory. Im in Northern kent county, North of Grand Rapids Mi. Just getting some rain today, the chicory I planted has been hanging in there despite the dry conditions!
Full of great information, I'll have to watch it again! Thanks John
John! Lol
Jeff, Do you mow your seclusion or chicory blend plots? Do you spray with clethodim or Imox? If so when do you use these methods/timing.
Not sure who Jeff is 😉 But yes we will mow all clover mixes if necessary. Some small kill plots with seclusion don’t need mowing as deer keep it down. But if it’s 60 to 70% flowered we may mow as long as it’s not dry conditions like now. Imox or clethodim will work for weed control:
👌
I converted five of my 11 food plots in central Virginia to perennials. You are so right when you made the statement that you cannot fight against weather conditions you are experiencing. Most times lately August has been dry - too dry to germinate seeds. I waited until September 15 to begin planting and we are finally getting multiple rain showers.
Stopped in Wausaukee and got two bags of oats, I didn't broadcast them last weekend because there is no rain in the forecast. I am letting things go until next spring when I frost seed my 5 clover blend! Hey John, raise the brim of your ball cap so we can see your face when your telling us information we need to know! You're information is f'in awesome, now show us what you look like😃😃👍👍 Good luck this season and damn the cold full speed ahead!!
Add that tip to the list 😊
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 “it’s not our business model”. 🤣👍. Sky’s the limit! Can’t wait for the next podcast!! Really glad they make it to RUclips!
Great video! One question, I planted your sweet feast brassicas July 27, Have not had rain here in West Michigan since September 5, some of the leaves are turning yellow. Will these bounce back if we get rain, expect over 1” in the next couple of days. Thanks again for the information you provide!
Check out a combo of our N and. Ap liquid with a high water rate
I bet Jeff is listening for ideas to make his own. Lmao
Guaranteed haha
Thanks John, I never question your seed because your heart and soul are into your company. Your videos are top notch! You should be called the seed professor. Thank you!
@@dougswinton3365just trying to help others have success without the BS
Lmao he will say he’s been implementing these ideas since 1995 or 1996
Jeff has been, he just recently started his own seed company! He has nothing but good to say about NWW and he has done alot of trial and error! To be honest him and john probably worked together to create alot of this! Don't dog Jeff he's one of the good ones!
My fields are looking as good as expected John. Sweet Feast is hands down, the best mix I have every used and trusted.
I agree that Sweet Feast is the best fall into winter blend out there. It is part of my food plot plan each year.
Looks like peas and little clover in it. You going to put rye on being the deer in it already???
Yes Rye and more peas
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 future video idea. Dave brant has a great radish pea video. Shame he passed. Gabe brown has a few good ones also
They demolish EVERY SINGLE plant thats in the blend. For my land they start out on the kale snd rape first. 3rd year using it and i will agree when u say its the best brassica blend on the market. Iv tried many others
You have earned my support as a customer.
I agree, Sweetfeast has been the best for me, I have tried quite a few since doing food plots and your brassica is best found so far
Your seed is performing better than everything else I've tried. The brassicas and the wet ground clover. I believe in your seed, the only bummer is the shipping charges seen a little high and make it pretty tough especially on small orders. But the seed is great.
Ya UPS is getting pricy. Unfortunate part of doing business
I've been trying no till. I'm in Elk rapids, mi. Have had terrible results with seeds dying on the surface. I just bought a drill. Despite no rain for 1 month, stuff is still coming up.
I tried a drill this fall. Amazing
My grain sorghum is just starting to head out, you think enough time to produce seed? In Harrisville area just north of Oscoda. Only 3 miles away from lake Huron. Seems like mid 70s til October
Should be close
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 Thanks for your response. Appreciate your service.
Truth be told I think when we are more matter of fact. People mistake it as talking something down. All I know is even as dry as it's been in Crawford County, and random bouts of October cold in August. I have sorghum from your soil builder standing 4+ feet tall, making seed heads, and I've got rye, oats, and winter peas all purchased from you. It's starting to grow BECAUSE I BURIED THE SEED. Thanks for your efforts, I'll have to send you some photos when I'm up for early antlerless
Second year here with Northwoods whitetails sweetfeast brassicas and Fall forage blend. Has been unbelievable!!!
Hi John, live in upstate ny. Do u think its to late to put a plot in? What would you suggest if u think I still have time. Thanks
Plenty of time for rye and oats combo
Your company and seed are the best! Planted your clovers and Sweet feast this year! Great seed. Will be buying more!
My sweet feast brassica is doing better than I expected with the lack of sunlight and rain
Haters gonna hate John. Love your seed. Always telling people to buy from you guys. 👍🏻
Must be nice. Total drought down here in the S/W. Everything is burning up. 😢
This is lower ground Half underwater in june
John great video and keep the no bs solid info coming. Great company!
By far beast brasica blend iv ever used.
Absolutely the best in the business!
Thanks John, same boat missed rain. By the way screen came in great.
I kind of wonder about adding seclusion blend to short season brassica. On my property it just seems like short season does better. I think the chicory might complement it. Might be worth trying once or twice.
Possibly straight chicory if you want. Or if you seclusion that could work as well, but I would keep the rate lower maybe 4 pounds an acre
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 you had a 2023 ez food plot video. I seen sorghum growing in it. You have any luck?
@@travissmith-wz5ncyes
John, thank you for your content. I know you are very busy with your seed company and yes this enhances it but it takes time away from your business and I appreciate it. I have bought and used your seed and I will continue to, I hope to get better at sea bed preparation fertilization etc in the future as I live pretty far from my property in northeastern PA. Sorry for the babble but I agree with you on the no-till there's nothing more beautiful in the world than a nice brown seed bed to plant into. Why is no till being pushed so much?
I think there is a time and place for it. Not many. IMO it creates content for people. And that gets views for channels. Some people are getting it to work, but most struggle. It takes less equipment, which helps a lot of folks but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk in this fall drought pattern. The only plot I have to do notill (because of massive rock problem) is not planted yet and probably won’t be planted this year.
Your Rye may still be ok, if it didn’t throw roots yet. We’re doing cover crop now, some laid in the ground 3 weeks and nothing. Got a rain and it finally germinated
Unfortunately, I see a bunch of roots.
Well that ain’t good
I till in spring then get buckwheat in and knock it over my fall seed. 3rd year with moderate success. Next year probably will till before fall seed and pack it in. NWW has the best seed out there. No garbage. Great quality and germ rates and awesome customer service.
On my sandy soil, no-till with drill works well. I broadcasted 200 LB on one acre there, and there has been no rain for the last two weeks. Winter does not want to grow so far this year. It is dry now.
Can’t beat the drill for no till. We have access to a new PW Outdoors drill. I think it’s called and it’s amazing.
John, what is a light tillage. One inch deep two inch deep? We have a drill and a rear tine tiller. Since we got the drill we don't use the tiller much anymore. I'm assuming you don't have a drill and are doing the next best thing to insure covering the seed and assuring great seed to soil contact. Am I correct on this? Thank you, I am a dedicated customer!😉
One inch deep with a tiller to create a seed bed for the next crop
I’ve been using the sweet feast for the last 3 season! It is fantastic. Key is seed rate!!! The sweet feast has always delivered!
I live in The thumb of Michigan the Deer LOVE KALE THERE.Yep I got the same Problem with Rain looks like it's going to rain. Then NO RAIN
It’s terrible Plots in high areas are struggling
One day hopefully in my lifetime my foodplot will look as great as that brassica plot you have out there. Just gonna keep chugging along till I get it right..
Looks great John!
John, where can we send you pictures of our plots using your seeds?
grain of salt, thats really all social media has become when looking for good advice.
