I love how you can totally hear that the amp is slightly more driven with the + version, it pushes a lil harder on the tubes, which is the sound I personally prefer for Metal, I like a tone that makes you think the amp is fucking agonizing and screaming in pain lol
Of course Ola, I just ordered myself a V-1.6 Canabalismo this afternoon and you have to go making these other choices better!!? LOL. Seriously, I went back and forth on what Solar to buy, took my time, but definitely wanted a V style badass looking guitar. And I'm so happy and proud that finally (at age 47) I ordered my dream Solar guitar!!! I can't wait to unbox it!! If it weren't for finding you on RUclips a couple years ago, I wouldn't be pacing the floor waiting for this guitar. You've inspired me to play guitar more than ever, along with my teenage sons and even my wife occasionally! Next order will be a pink Solar for her too! Have a great weekend everyone!😃🤘🤘
Pickups that are to specific limit you. Example, low output twangy single coil can do one thing well but only that one thing. Unless you play on one genre or need the instrument for only that one tone, then it’s OK. A professional metal guitarist probably doesn’t need a versatile pickup. I would say most people need versatility.
You know what would be awesome? If you could try a pickup before you buy it. Just as you can try guitars you're willing to purchase. Wishful thinking, sadly.
@@Cthulhu_Awaken I get what you're saying, but there are so many X vs Y comparison and discussion on the web that you can easily get lots of info about what different pickups sound like. It's also important to note that just because Ola can make these pickups sound one way, you can make them sound different. Yes, pickups adds a lot of character to the tone, but YOUR tone is ultimately because of how you play, plus whichever amp you're using.
@@Bru741iX I guess a new pickup is kind of a jump in the dark, you can gather as many infos as you can on the web to give you a clue... Even if you could try it beforehand the sound coming through your own guitar and amp/software is a different variable.
I have the Seymour Duncan Alternative 8 in the bridge of my guitar and I love it! I would assume that the Solar Plus is similar since they both have the kind of magnet.
...and the winner is... the amp Both sound good, just comes down to personal preference. I prefer the standard as I am more into classic rock and metal.
Sounds like a JB and a Distortion had a baby! Not as gloomy as Black Winters get, love the pink dynamics from the Solar+ too! Makes me want that to not mess with and ill buy a 2 series Solar to mod
Do for see having your guitars in major US store’s ? Congratulations on your success and wish you continued success with your guitar lineup!!! Your the greatest dude ever John from Dallas
Congrats on the new pickup! Sounds massively aggressive. I think it would be great to see another comparison video: One where you change the amp gain so that both pickups produce similarish amounts of gain, and that way you can better here what sound you prefer, because just getting more gain is usually not the problem.
My ears are so beat-up from years of loud metal guitar, I can barely hear a difference! And what I can perceive is so slight that I can't see myself getting the new pups in my old Solar! (I do plan to get one of the Solar V's, so maybe you'll have em for that model by then...)😁
Nice guitars... sort of. I'm putting some emg, 60 and an 81, into a a1.7rop and one of the screws holding in the front pickup was at a 30 degree angle, well maybe 15 degrees, which meant I basically had to drill the head off of it to even get the pickup out. I mean okay, it's a factory line and occasionally things will go wrong so I go to the site, not that I want anything, no rewards or credits or whatever, so much I just want to let you know and bugger me what a huge amount of info I've got to fill out just to be heard. As for the pickups, alnico 5's, I reckon I'm going to try them with neodymium, pull them apart, well the bridge one at 16k (as the neck at 9k might be a real nice lap steel pickup!) as the density of the flux of neodenium really likes bass and too kinda adds some nice breakup with the trebles. I'd suggest, with such high DCR you might wanna try the rare earths. Oh, and could you please wax most of the screws at the factory... they're going to be a total ass to pull apart in a few years time.
I can't s3ems to edit my comment on my tablet to add but.... I'm curious to hear what Solar plus sounds like with the volume on the guitar turned back a bit. Another test woukd be to back the pickup away from the strings a bit to hear if it adds definition. which one do you think will cut better through a mix for leads.... the original Solar. Solar plus sounds to me to fit best with a rhytmn player or songs that is more power chord rhytmn oriented playing.
What if I want just the pickups.. so I can throw them onto my solars I already bought? Are these going to be available independently.. sold separately?
Hello Ola, You have got to be one of the coolest guys in the Rock world. This is coming from a 69 year old Rock Bass player from Munster Indiana. U.S.A. Also please tell your wife that she plays bass excellent. Both of you make a great couple.
For the 6string I prefer the sound of the solar plus pickups. Not because it's hotter, but it has more top end sizzle to them. Always thought the original duncan solars lacked that, which made them sound kinda dry and tame (to my preference, anyway). Not sure about the 7string, I always thought they worked fine for that.
@@toneconsultant agreed, but bringing the gain up with the og duncan solar would also add mud which you would have to filter with an overdrive/clean boost, that is not the case with the plus.
Hey Ola, I gotta say - these duncan solar pickups are not cutting it for a lot of us metal players, I’m consistently seeing comments about these not being “metal enough”. I think the duncan distortion would be a better default option.
My opinion...you know what they say..... I liked the clarity and definition of the Duncan Solar with heavy distortion. Not so much on a crunch setting as they lack a high output and when I found out a Solar plus was out I got my hopes up. I was hoping it was a Duncan Solar with a hotter output but instead they made it with more low end and cut the mids. Sorta balanced on EQ but meh. I think the original Duncan Solar is what works best for me but just need to boost the signal and possibly the amp. Reminds me of the XL500 Bill Lawrence pickups in that respect. The Duncan Solar plus pickup is heavy sounding but it's hard to produce frequencies naturally when they are not naturally there. I'm all over the place right now choosing a pickup for my Ibanez RG1570. Stock V8's are ok but not that hot. I broke it down to Seymour Duncan Custo m 5 ( not hot enough), Bareknuckles nailbomb (midsey perhaps too much), Doug Aldrich Suhr, Blackfire Immortal and finally Duncan Solar. Duncan Solar pickups made my list because they speak.....like a human voice.
Sounded beautiful. I wonder a comparison between Duncan Distortions with the Plus. By the way I am practicing your 14 Days Alternate Picking challenge exercise!
But how do the new pups handle cleans? Will you have to consider the higher output when doing a Will it Chug, or when testing pedals etc, as the higher output would push things that little bit more, which could be drastically different with lower output pups.
OLA! I notice that this was all bridge pickup for this video. Is there also a neck pickup Duncan Solar Plus? Did not know if it was just the bridge pickup (which makes sense for hot alnico 8) or if it is a set (no idea if 8 would be too hot for a neck pickup). Thank you!
Well it's about time to buy another Solar . Guess I'll be getting one with the new pickup this summer. Also probably get a baritone at some point. Appreciate ya Ola.
does anyone have a tip about how to get more juice out of the original? i bought ab1.7htpb i love the colour so much and no other guitar has it other than fishman fluence one and im kind bummed abt the lower output sound :(
I like the original more for it's better clarity and less tubby low end.. Its good to have options though. The Plus clearly has more output. Maybe we can get a video with similar gain to have a better comparison of tone.
Tonezoney edit: They sound like the DiMarzio Tonezone to me, so I don't like it. :) I have tonezone in one of my guitars, it's not that bad, but I even prefer the Ibanez V7 (or V8 or whichever is in the bridge position) to it. So does this mean that all Solars from now on will be equipped with these instead of the original Duncan Solar?
It would be great to have the Duncan Solar PUs available separately in the Solar page. Just an idea :)
Good idea
This!
Not going to happen. He will sell more guitars by keeping it this way
I agree.
There is likely a US equivalent, much like how the Duncan Solar is very similar to the Custom 5.

Solar guitars are following the Street Fighter Model. The 2030 lineup will likely include a A1.6 V II Turbo ' Plus model.
Alnico 5 magnets just a tighter response. A lot of clarity. Alnico 8 sounds a bit muddied
YES!! Love the room Ola!! Great sounding pup's as well!!
I love that translucent red,I saw a Solar trans blue on Reverb for 800$ yesterday,me wants!!!👍🔥🤘 Thanks Ola!!!

Alnico 5 like the SD JB model. My favorite.
Nice work Ola , this pup adds some Flavor ; )

The Duncan 5 always wins
Alnico 8 is great. The transparency of a alnico 5 and the agression of ceramic combined

Great to see the brand expanding even more. New pup sounds real good 👍
