Me too.(also in 86) Although they're in storage at this point, but great little speaker set up. I remember being intrigued by the passive sub/satellite setup. At some point I need to set up a second system employing these little guys. I have a Yamaha AS-801 which should match well with them..
My set Canton Plus S with Plus C (passive dual coil subwoofer) is from 1988 and still performs great! (Lateron I added an additional set of Plus S and a Canton Plus AV 700.2 to make the 5.1 set complete) the old ones were made in an old school building in Germany and every speaker was tested for audio quality...
Wow! My Plus S's have these plastic fantastic horrible spring loaded terminals that make me question German engineering. Are these newer, "improved" models with bonafide binding posts?
I've got the ones with those crappy plastic spring terminals. They're made in West Germany so I would assume they were older, and the binding posts were on later models.
Then there probably was something broken. They are far from shrill. I have a older version with different terminal, which had a problem at the rear side of the terminal i had to fix. Now they are sounding surprisingly refined and not harsh at all.
I bought a pair of these in 1986, along with a Plus C subwoofer. They still sound great after all these years. Made of quality materials.

I have that speaker too. Bought for 5 euros at a thrift store. A worthless shrill sounding high speaker.
