i actually liked it. it felt more like season 1 than it did season 6 and i actually liked it. it felt more like a "rick and morty adventure" rather then some multi-season lore changing episode, which it felt like they were constantly trying to outdo their craziness from the year prior. it felt like family where they just throw a dart at a wall and it becomes an episode.
"morty+sperm+horse man+summer= sperm monsters incest space baby"
    or
"turkey+government conspiracy = alien thanksgiving predator thing"
it was just way to much. it was like family just throwing references out just to make a reference. like the statue of liberty coming to life is literally just a family guy cutaway with no set up. it was just random thing that happened just to happen but really served no purpose outside being "look a hilarious outcome that you didn't expect!".
this felt like it was more grounded. yes they did weird shit but it was never in universe logic breaking like recent seasons have been.

Really good points! Yeah the constant outdoing craziness was getting out of hand and ruining their brand. This one was a lot more casual which I expected a lot of fans to enjoy. It was a safe base hit. Hoping to see just a little more craziness this season though.

Why is no one addressing the fact that this show's nonhuman characters continue to be voiced by human actors? Let's not sugarcoat it; this is essentially nonhumanface. It's 2023, people.

It was pretty funny, Hugh Jackman made me laugh quite a bit. Despite it not being a concept episode, more of typical sitcom, I think Rick and Morty needs a lot of both in each season. I was dissapointed there was no explanation for why Squanchy is back. I asked every season for years what happened to him, and it didn't deliver. That's the true disappointing thing about the premiere.

That's a very fair critique, and great point on concept vs casual sitcom episode.

Thought this episode sucked. I think the biggest issue with it was is that Rick and Morty no longer feels small scale and obscure. Now it just feels like another animated comedy show. Which is interesting because adult swim did so well recently with smiling friends. Also where is the b plot!?

    • @TheSandbox_Official
      @TheSandbox_Official  Год назад +1

Hm. Someone else here said they liked this one because it felt smaller-scale and more causal to them. Honestly, I think everyone just has a different bar for "small-scale" and "craziness". Everyone's tastes are a little bit different. Hoping at least one of the episodes this season is made to your tastes!

I'm glad someone thought this. There appears to be blacklash for the episode from the general but a lot of youtube critics seem to like the episode for whatever reason.
I thought it was overall very weak especially for a season premiere. The plot was dull and there weren't enough funny jokes to save the episode (although I really did like the fading pill joke as well).
From what we've seen, Morty's voice is pretty spot on but Rick's voice was distracting for me. When Rick talks neutrally he actually sounds good, it's when he has to emote or yell it sounds so rough. I think Rick's voice actor is yet to master the voice. At this point he is unable to give much emotion without breaking character, so we end up getting these weird midpoints where he only sorta side like Rick and sorta sounds emotional.

Thanks, dude glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I wonder when this episode was recorded; would give me more hope in Cardoni's emoting Rick voice if it was earlier than later on, cuz I certainly agree so far that it's not quite right. Though Belden pretty much nailed it with Morty, but it's yet to be seen how well he carries the voice for a full ~22 minute episode.
However, I'm honestly fully on board with the voices being tweaked moving forward so long as it's consistent and they each make it their own. I want this new phase of R&M to mean something and be memorable. Season 6 was a move in the right direction but I agree with the general consensus that the show hasn't really been the same since the first 3 seasons.
Hope to see your thoughts on the next few episodes as they come out!

The fading pill joke was actually so well did, and they did it in the right time too when things got pretty damn serious and dramatic and the fact that everybody just looks so casual and calm and poopy is the only one who reacted 💀

i agree, morty's seems close enough i wouldn't be able to tell outside maybe a small couple ways he says words, but ricks definitely sounds different. it's not even that it's bad, but like you said it just feels rough. i also thought there were a few times where it felt more like a dub and not rick talking, as the lips weren't matching. the character stopped talking but the actor carried on for like a split second long and it just didn't seem to line up right.
though i did like the story

I mean it was no worse than last seasons opener... 🤷 but by that i mean they were both the worst season openers out of all the other seasons.. but last season was still good imo so I'm assuming this one will be also. I had no qualms about the episode in general. Just that Mr PB sounded way more different than both Rick or Morty. Good episode overall though. I'm just so glad they're back and relatively unscathed through the Roiland debacle

Season 6 was probably my favorite of the last 3 seasons (gonna be tough to beat the first 3). Personally, I really enjoyed Solaricks, but I think this one's humor makes it a closer match-up.
And yeah, always glad to get more R&M! I think they handled Roiland's ousting really well with the new actors.

What are your thoughts on the newest Rick & Morty season opener? A promising start? A major misfire? Or somewhere in between?

I dont get it, i like it. I will continue to like it, and im gonna go watch it. I feel like earlier season backlash for things like s4 or 5 were deserved, they were kinda crummy messy madlib episodes. I like that theyre returning to form so to speak, has me excited to see the show try to reenter its prime again

That's the best attitude to take, for sure! I definitely didn't hate this one. It's by no means the worst episode, but there's still a lot of room on the upside for this season. Excited to see how well it holds up!

i dont get why people critically rate this shit with like a score card to see if its a good episode or not, bro its a damn sit com. do you wait for a new simpsons episode to come out and rate it critically? no. watch the episodes and move on you dont gotta do all that

Agreed it's not even that serious they act like it's a big deal, it's best to describe a show you enjoy and certain parts you like from it in that manner but the criticism they give in the imbd reviews is sometimes so hilarious they act like they're a professional critic, like it's a cartoon it's not a big deal.

Someone on a Johnny 2 Cellos video comment said the "two halves of Seth Macfarlane" thing, so you're cribbing their joke but it is objectively true
