We continue our series of “factory tour” short documentaries, aiming to explore manufacturers from the filmmaking industry and the personal stories behind them. This time I headed to Rome to meet Elisabetta and Beatrice Cartoni, who are currently managing the CARTONI tripods family business.

I LOVE cartoni. I can't stop to support this people and business. THIS is how you put passion in your job. Once I went at their office asking for a fluid head repair and mr Cartoni's grandchild got me a new fluid head for a super cheap price (anniversay edition!) as a replacement instead and helped me fine tuning the legs frictions.. I'll always be thankful to them for such humanity and kindness and for reminding me there is still good in the world out of big corporations and other shit. And, yes, there are dogs in the office and I love that. Thanks Cartoni Family

Today I ordered my Cartoni focus KSDS12-CXM carbon. I saw the gorgious tripod at my work, the largest camera rental company of the Netherlands. The craftmanship made me fall in love. This portrait is just so heartwarming to see with how much love these tripods are made. Keep doing what you do Cartoni.

As far as Italian tripod makers go, Manfrotto is most likely the one stealing the spotlight, when their video heads are absolute crap (somewhat jerky starts and stops with pans and tilts (not buttery smooth), tilt lock not keeping camera in exact position, etc.).

You really don't know one way or the other until you use a company's products at length. Any company can drum up marketing hype and make you feel good about them.

I've unfortunately read that Cartoni's build quality is dubious compared to the likes of Miller and Sachtler, particularly in their less expensive Focus line. Can anyone attest one way or the other about those claims? In any case, I wish that Cartoni's counterbalance and drag controls would be numbered like the aforementioned competition, so you could always reference, e.g., "set counterbalance to 2, tilt drag to 5, and pan drag to 4 for this particular camera", etc.
Made in Italy. So when I buy Cartoni, I know when it's been made. Good.
Until videndum buys them like all the others.
Hopefully they're the type that can't be bought. And something tells me if they were going to sell out to a big corp, they would have done so a long time ago. Only if they get financially desperate, I suppose.
