I've seen tons of videos on RUclips about barre chords but this one is by far the most effective. The tip about thumb placement was immensely helpful. I CAN FINALLY PLAY A CLEAN BARRE CHORD AND I'M NOT STRAINING MY MUSCLES DOING IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This is the best bar chord video I have seen. I got a few gems from here that I hadnt thought of. Every other video on bar chords is on an easy electric and spend 15 minuites to say nothing special.
Thanks! Got my first clean barre chord at the 1st fret! I could do them at and above fifth position but not below. The roll and hanging exercises helped a ton.
Your suggestions worked as long as I was just barring with my index finger. BUT, as soon as I tried to position ANY of my other fingers to make a chord, my index finger moves out of position, and I have go grip the strings really tightly. The main problem is that the G- string comes right in the crease of my finger, and all I get is a horrible, buzzing sound from the string. This problem has plagued me for over 45 years!
I have personally found that placing my thumb behind the index finger (rather than the middle finger as you show here) is more effective for barre chords. I saw this video and practiced it your way for a awhile and was *almost* there, but finally putting my thumb just a little farther left so that it looked like a "pinch" between my index and thumb was what got me there. I did not actually pinch, that is just describing how it looked. It felt like I suddenly had much more leverage with my index finger and was able to do it consistently, almost effortlessly. I love everything else you said!
Thank you. Most people never mention the "mechanics" of the anatomy of the hand in relation to the "Anatomy" of the instrument. By the way... " A Priest, a Minister and a Rabbi go into a BAR...", The Law Student has to Pass the Bar, The Convict is behind Bars, the Ballet Dancer warms up at the Barre. The smuggler hides Gold Bars. But, the guitarist just gets stuck, trying to make a Barre! it's not fair! It's more like an "Arm Bar" in Martial Arts! Anybody got a Bar of Chocolate?😇 Oh, I forgot, Davey Crockett killed a "Bar" when he was only three!
Great advice, beginner here, I learned bars by playing stairway to heaven, it’s much easier to play placing index bar over all the strings, what even is more difficult is baring only the first 3 strings allowing the other to be open for a base pick, ouch, lol
I have extremely dry skin on my hands with all the handwashing I do in the hospital. I discovered that when my hands are well moisturized and supple, it's easier to control the strings including doing a bar.
Playing "Preludio en Do Menor" - Agustin Barrios, I get tons of little buzzes barring the chords. Help anyone? I also adjusted my truss rod, issue still doesn't go away.
Honestly im way too impatient to learn the guitar lol .... Like I've watched this video and now I'm like, "yeah, I can go on to the next video. I'll practise as I go..." cos it's no fun being able to play a clean bar chord if I can't get a nice melody above it as well.
tbh I play a lot of violin so I can kinda vaguely bullshit my way through some basic guitar. A surprising amount of technique is transferrable. BUT I'm watching a few of these videos cos I'm realising that violin technique won't quite cut it on guitar and quite apart from tonal quality, my wrist starts to hurt a little or feel tight after a bit of playing bar chords so I must be holding some tension there...and I'd rather sit down and sort out technique than give myself an injury lol
Realisation time: I think the wrist thing was that I was just using too much pressure instead of the weight of my arm in order to maintain a clear tone in a bar chord. Also could be partially just that I'm starting guitar and my hand is weak and actually having to exercise different muscles lol

Electric guitarist here, but always had problems cleaning up barre chords. First time I ever saw the subject explained this way. Awesome!
Amazing lesson as always on those micro details. These are so helpful.
Dude. Thank you! That thumb placement thing is IT!!
Superb video, I went from dull clunk bar chords to tuneful ones in the minutes of your tutorial, wow what a workout for the hands! Thank You!

As with other comments, the thumb placement and torque explanation helped immensely. Thank you for the great video.

This is a great explanation of doing a Barre Chord. Thank you

My favorite Bar is the one with a couple of tequilla and rum.
Best tutorial on yt
And perhaps the most important tip: keep your index finger as straight as a Capo. That worked magic for me.
This video solved several problems for me. Thank your excellent content.
This was hugely helpful. Thanks!
Thanks! It’s much easier than I was taught...
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!
Great tips.

AH men thanks!! Solved a major frustration of mine.
I find my solution here :)
I have extremely dry skin on my hands with all the handwashing I do in the hospital. I discovered that when my hands are well moisturized and supple, it's easier to control the strings including doing a bar.
Oddly enough I almost requested this a few days ago. Also, *first*
Helpful
im high and this spoke to me
I DID IT :D
used the weight of my arm :)
Bb chord
F7 chord
F# chord
Playing "Preludio en Do Menor" - Agustin Barrios, I get tons of little buzzes barring the chords. Help anyone? I also adjusted my truss rod, issue still doesn't go away.
How should the index be hard on the strings softly or firmly?
Cool, I found the only good barre chord video.
Next video ?
I still cannot get all of them perfectly. Now the second chord sounds weird
Honestly im way too impatient to learn the guitar lol ....

f barre....letting arm hang still doesn't press string 1 down.
I started taking anabolic steroids and solved this problem already
Great tips.
