DISCLAIMER: I am well aware of the risks involved with flying at a low altitude, the known and unknown. This was done legally, with full consent by the crew, and by an experienced pilot. Do not attempt without proper training and intimate knowledge of the aircraft, the location, and weather. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and it was incredible.
Please think twice before you comment something negative.

FloridaFlying - there is risk with anything one does in life. If you perform these flights and have identified and planned the mitigation procedures and briefed everyone onboard of what to expect and who will perform the mitigation’s then these flights fall within the FAA guidelines. Now if you just want to, say, take an A5 Sea Plane, fill your body with methamphetamines, a little Opioids, sleeping pills, some anxiety medications then top it off with a few beers then decide to pull off a few high-speed low level passes along with a few high “G” 60 degree bank angle turns then maybe you’ll be headed for some serious deadly outcomes but when planned correctly you can operate the aircraft within the envelop it was designed to operate in. You can’t plane for every situation and I would be worried about bird strikes at low level flight over these waters but with the prop & engine behind your the chance of birds rousting up into the air will be lower due to this aircrafts design. I’m not sure but I would want to take a flight over these waters at least once. I’m not sure if I would make a second pass but I believe you can make a single pass with minimal disturbance to the wildlife and do it safely!

    • @MrWATCHthisWAY

cia212 - because of a baseball legend they didn’t want to release the truth about the possible cause. Baseball has more money than the A5 company. Even when AvWeb did their review Paul only briefly touched at the very end of his assessment that there were traces of methamphetamines in his system. But the coroner’s first report came out right after the accident it reported there were 10x’s the lethal dose of meth for a person of his weight. That report was pulled immediately from the web. They said they were protecting the family. Yea the baseball family! Don’t want to let people know that one of their star pitchers are hurling 100mph fastballs while the possibility of using meth? I live in Philly and Roy was one of our 4 aces and this city lost a son that day but hiding the truth never finds the root causes and we never learn from his mistakes.

    WOW, LOOKED LIKE FUN!!!!!!!!
SURE there are risks, but the guy knew the area well, any deer/animals as some have mentioned would have been jumping and running and insight or stayed down due to the oncoming noise and vibrations the plane and engine would have been causing!!!!!!
The pilot himself made the statement "he would not be making the route if it was not one he had intimate knowledge of the craft and the terrain, and IF the weather had been against the flight!!!!!!!"
It is similar to going up in a hand glider of any sort, where it is safe only with knowledge, of craft and terrain, winds and weather permitting!!!!!!

I just watched that video of the guy lowering the landing gear from a car. The comments went like: good old days when people got shit done.
And how health & safety/risk assessment would never allow that to happen these days. Now when there's a video of people taking a little risk, to enjoy themselves. The fun & safety police are out in force in the comments. You could die tomorrow in you bed/car at work & in America get shot jogging or getting food at McDonalds. Life's a risk, live it or stay home & play it safe.

As a military instructor pilot who preaches safety, who makes intense CRM and ORM decisions to accomplish missions, I find the general aviation pilot's mindset so pathetic.. "OhhhHHH NooOO whAt iF thE enGiNe FailS?!" What the hell is wrong with you people? What happened to your balls? Do you swim with water wings on in case your heart fails? Do you wear a bulletproof vest to the grocery store? Is it too risky to go surfing because there are sharks, to ride a motorcycle because there are big cars, to ride a rollercoaster because it might come off the rails? Take some damn risk for the sake of fun and if you're too scared of your own shadow, don't leave the house. Don't bother other people. These guys are flying over grass. It's not a big deal.

I cannot but use the word cherish to describe my memories of getting to fly myself around in Florida. I was particularly fond of my night flights between Fort Meyers and Fort Lauderdale where I was based. As classic to stories of Southern Florida in the early '80s I won my flight lessons through solo by recovering stolen property. It was stolen from the Flight School by a disgruntled employee. The whole of the MacDonald detective scenario was lived out through accusations that I had stolen the life raft to make the pilot look bad. My time was primarily done in a Tomahawk though I have been allowed to fly a good variety of planes and even the DC 6. That thin wing on the Tomahawk made me a conservative pilot. When flying at night they tell you to land in the darkest spots should the engine fail since those are pond and lakes. In the water upside down is pretty likely. I thought the FAA said you had to fly no lower than allowed for a landing. Typically below 500 feet is not it.

If they had an engine failure they would just settle onto the marshy water in a plane without extended gear and a boat hull. That grass was swamp they were flying over. They never pulled high G or high banked turns. The hardest part woud be getting someome with an airboat to come find them. No offense taken! It’s not my plane, but I know these days the Aventura has some of the best water take off performance in its class, at least compared to the searey. They’ve been putting 117hp engines on them, and I think up to 130hp. Also I love the drifter, that’s gotta be my favorite ultralight type of plane (light sport now, but we all know it came from an ultralight). I’ve never been in a trike, I’m not sure what to think of them. I think my current mission is two seat, side by side, taildragger, with room for two backpacks

@@FloridaFlying Searay with 130 hp! Wow! One more thing I meant to say is freeboard on an Aventura/Buccaneer type plane. You're gonna' think I'm constantly knocking those types but here's the deal. Put two guys in either one, add some mildly choppy water, land in it as you normally do, start your turn from upwind to downwind to taxi for takeoff....what happens during the turn? You better make that turn real quick. (not always possible to takeoff straight ahead). With 6 maybe 8 inches of freeboard, I've almost sunk myself with two guys from boarding water. Anywho, flown knowledgeably, they're great & fun aircraft! Every land/sea aircraft has limitations. Nice talkin' to ya'.
