After a few months of carving stone sculptures every day, I suddenly had the urge to do some pull ups. I did about eight fingertip pull ups - before that, I don't think I could've done one if my life depended on it. People would joke about my hand crushing handshakes.
First they would make a clay sculpture and spend months to years refining the details... Then they would use large calipers to get the angles and details right by copying what they already made. This technique is still very popular today
Yeah. ....Ancient Rome was an empire. ....so they could afford to import artists, craft-mans, arhitects to work for they. (Like Appolodor from Damascus ) The sculptures belong to Italia Peninsola becouse that people PAID for sculptures ,not becouse thay made them !!!!! Sculptors and workshops were mainly greeks !!!!!!
Ah! I've always wondered how they got it so smooth centuries ago. All I could picture was a guy standing next to a finished statue with a hammer and chisel in his hands. lol
I've also seen some like clay turtle pots for planting. Those would be much easier. But trying this way first. Unfortunately my tools aren't perfect though.
There's little to no room for any sort of error in stonecarving. It depends on the subject, and where on the sculpture the mistake happens. Otherwise, the sculptor must begin again.
From what ive seen in museums, statues if they dont have a hand or head where it was supposed to be theres a square carved into it and then it makes me think that the statues mightve had multiple pieces and were put together. Same with the columbs
@coolin7000 Hahaha I love your little poem here and agree with it. And it's pretty silly not to use at least a power drill. The greats were not great because of the type of tools that they used.
That depends on what the artist intends. I've seen sculptures that look as if they could get up and walk away, and others that are deliberately blocky and crude-seeming, and a variety of forms in between. Or they chose to end the video there because it's more of the same until the sculptor finished the piece.
Oh my God, I'm here in Italy right now and compared to what I'm seeing, this guy is carving marble like a child. Where are the details? Where are the faces? I'm no artist but sculptures in this video are rubbish.

Sculpting stone without machines is hard work, Michelangelo was probably ripped.

homo universalis guy could do anything
Mike surely was a badass!
How the heck did the ancient romans do all this so detailed

Benini made over 80 starting from 20 years old or something.
I dont believe it’s at all possible.
What was the secret I wonder.?
They took it ready from the Greeks
I could be mistaken, but I think he meant that the types of tools an artist uses is not what determines their greatness.
In Naples we Say " u mast fa e fierr, e i fierr fann u mast"
That mean "the artist make the tool, and the tool make the artist"

different artist prefer different tools, im sure there are benefits to every tool from every era. Really enjoyed the vid, great job
of all art forms, sculpting, for me, is the best
Just imagine how many times the artists smashed their thumbs.
it only needs to happen once before you decide to pay more attention
My job is sculpting cement art. I send you my best wishes
It blows my mind that people in the first century created such art with no power tools. Just...wow.

Thank you. Enjoyed your video very much.

I GOTTA LICK THE BARBLE
I'VE GOT TO EMBRACE THE MARBLE.
IVE GOTTA SNIFF THE MARBLE.
I thought the sculpture was inside the stone. He's just removing the parts that aren't the sculpture. Great stuff.
Beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think about these sculptures everytime someone talks about how hard the boxes at Giza would be to make
Granite is a lot harder than marble
This dude sounds like he is in 'zen' mode constantly...
The Chad hand chiseling marble sculptor vs the Virgin photoshop graphic NFT artist.
How did they sculpt the virgin with veil statue? The veil is transparent and amazing - just unbelievable.
It was a high technique that hard to say
Very good
Trying to make a turtle out of it. Harder than I anticipated. But hopefully I'll be a be able to sell it well. Also trying with wood.
opere d'arte incredibili

Godspeed to you, Turtles
I will once do the sculpture of myself or my beloved
Very good job!!
Very neat
Nicely done
What were chisels made out of back in Michaelangelos day?
Is a hardwork .. beautiful
I watched like 1 video about marble and youtube decides to fill my recommendation with marble videos
Yeah I just realized my mistake as well...
Magic!
I like to carve stoone too
does the marble sculptor, especially for the realistic model, has no room for error or mistake?
There's little to no room for any sort of error in stonecarving. It depends on the subject, and where on the sculpture the mistake happens. Otherwise, the sculptor must begin again.
NICE!!! how long would it take him to do that???
Three weeks.
Imagine how careful and exact you had to be back then . One mistake and you could throw off the whole design !
Just visit Stone carving village in VietNam, u will see

Where can I, as a normal person, get large rough marble stone in the USA?
stoneforsculptors d0t c0m is one option that I`ve found, it seems like they sell huge pieces of quality stone
+dodgechallenger2008 anywhere.
I can get you any size of marble or limestone
Sounds like steve brule
what is that tool he's using at 1:46?
+Sam Barkley its a drill :)
+Sam Barkley its called a bow drill.....in egypt they still use bow lathes....theres a vid on utube.
+Sollai Cartwright BOW drill.
Yada yada, are you the sculptor?
It looks like an oldschool drill.
Wow
Who is this in video?
its an very old drill
where is this?
Where can I buy tools like that? I'm from Poland.
you put an michaelangelo face paint from the final trial? well that is preciselly the kind of drill of michaelangelo era...
what's the name of this sculptor and the piece he's working on?
The sculpture is called... Legma...
That's the idea behind losing weight chip away bulk slowly and mold and shape what's left.
The end came too soon
I think it's a turtle
sculpting makes my brain explode, i cannot do it.
Whether you think you can or you can't you're right
VIM PELA PRO FABIANA
Dr Steve Brule as narrator
What's that spinning thing used to refine small spaces?
+Angela Lin It's a drill .
thanks
+Angela Lin its called a bow drill.....very old.5000 years.
Thanks Scott!
If this is the apex of his work, then I would say that it is nothing in comparison to the work of, say, the Romans.
Where’s your marble statues?
I feel I could sculpt but never really tried it
This guy is good but he's no Michelangelo.
I like turtles.
That dudes lungs are full of marble dust.
i hope that isnt finished.

I hope that's not the finished product... If so, he's not even close to Da Vinci..
iirc marble is not cheap at all....i wonder if beginners use some sort of poor's man marble to practice on before jumping into marble lol
I live near Carrara where they mine marble that Michelangelo used you go to the beach or up the mountain and you can find marble everywhere for free
i cant beleive hes using mallet chisels with a hammer....sacralich.
Arte era el de antes💔 ahora te hacen cada boludez
Unfortunately the narrator mumbles and this makes him difficult to understand...
Bye bye lungs
Just wear a respirator and work outside, you'll be fine.
This is advance, lost technology.
