This song was written by Carole King in resonse to James Taylor's song Fire and Rain about feeling alone.
Not true. I originally thought that but the first time James heard it was when he was performing at the Troubadour when he heard Carole play it on the piano in an empty studio when everyone left he asked her if he could use it and she said yes. He even made the joke that he was tied to that song for the next 40 years because everyone wanted to hear him play it

@@peacemaker6662 the response wasnt that she "didnt write it" the issue with her statement is she said it was "written in response to Fire and Rain" - that was not true. The creation of "best friend" was entirely different and unexpected. Although they did have a close relationship. James is the one who encouraged carole to start her own singing career.
