Qodosen SR-286 simply astounding on MW, compared to XHDATA D-808 and Tecsun PL-368

  • This is my first proper long-distance comparison of the Qodosen SR-286 and other radios on MW. Here where I live in Johannesburg, South Africa, MW conditions are not so good in summer, there are many thunder and lightning storms. The weather is cooling down now as we are heading for winter, so MW signals are coming through more regularly and clearly now.
    This is a comparison of the Qodosen SR-286, the XHDATA D-808 and the Tecsun PL-368 on two distant signals. One is Emissor Provincial do Niassa from Lichinga, Mozambique (1600 km, 1000 miles). The other is Vesti FM from Grigoriopol, Moldova, in Eastern Europe (8700 km, 5400 miles). Vesti FM is a Russian station that broadcasts on both FM and MW. I use the the Tecsun AN-200 loop antenna on all three radios. The Tecsun, like the Qodosen, can use external MW antennas, so I plug the loop directly into the MW antenna input on both these.
    I think the Qodosen is a MW marvel. It far outperforms both the other radios, using the same antenna. The Qodosen is very good on shortwave and really pulls in weak signals, but on MW it is more than good, it really excels. This is a wonderful radio for MW DXing.
    I recorded the sound digitally via the earphone jacks on all three radios, into the Tecsun ICR-110. Video and audio then synced afterwards.
    CORRECTION: In the video I list the Vesti FM transmitter as 600 kW, it is actually 500 kW.
    00:00 Introduction
    01:39 Emissor Provincial do Niassa, Mozambique
    04:37 Vesti FM from Moldova (8700 km away)
    10:15 Clear Vesti FM station ID
    10:57 Back to Mozambique

    Thanks Andre for this wonderful comparison video, the TEF6688 chip which is designed for car radio reception brings weak stations, because even local stations become DX when driving around the city. If only the chip’s design team had added a SSB/NBFM section to their chip. Oh Well , can have everything.
    The 368 performs like my GP-5 model on MW which means that weak stations will be lost in the noise…good to see the XHDATA D808 performance is better. I wish your hand a Belka All Mode (2022) model whose chip set is direct conversion design it does very well when directly attached to my Trek magnetic loop antenna when I am outside or even better when attached to my Pixel Pro 1B Magnetic loop antenna. I have not tried it on a long wire as of yet, but I might try to build a Beverage Antenna as soon as I pluck down the money for a roll of 400 feet of wire.

      My pleasure, glad you enjoyed the video. I think the TEF6686 chip really shows its mettle here, as you say. It works in cars for pulling in hard-to-catch signals, it works really well in the Qodosen doing the same thing. I do hope to get a Belka some day, it is definitely on my want list!

    What a great MW catch! I plugged in my An200 but seemed not to work by plugging it into my Sony radios? It worked well by placing it near but I will try again.
    I will try and get one of these sometime because it would make a great outdoor radio on camping trips.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  4 месяца назад +2

      Hey Matt, thanks! Surprisingly good reception of Vesti FM on the Qodosen, with just the little Tecsun loop. I am looking forward to many more interesting catches!
      I think perhaps the Sony radios do not have antenna inputs for MW specifically. You need to be able to switch between the internal ferrite antenna and an external antenna to be able to plug in something like the AN-200. Only a few radios can actually do that, the Qodosen is one, the Tecsun PL-368 is another. With other radios you'll have to pair the AN-200 to the ferrite antenna by placing it near the radio, as you did.
      I definitely think the Qodosen is worth getting, certainly for a MW DXer like you. Will be very useful when you are camping, but it might even surprise you at home with that 100 metre wire antenna of yours!

      @@swlistening The internal ferrite is disconnected but the AN200 plugged in is worse than the ferrite alone. The old Sony radios just don’t seem to like the AN200 directly connected

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  4 месяца назад

      @@arcticradio Maybe the Sony radios just don't like that direct connection, as you say. I don't own any old Sony radios, so can't really compare here on my side... I only have the Sony ICF-J40, but it does not have an external antenna jack.

    Hello André, well, this is a conclusive test if I've seen one. I'm impressed by your catching this Russian radio. So far I've been unable to catch it from home. Maybe when my SR-286 comes, hopefully soon, will I be able to dig out more than the usual batch of MW Spanish and English stations plus some from the Maghreb.
    I'm not much of a MW listener, but I haven't read great things about the PL-368's capabilities. Its small pluggable ferrite antenna is, well, too small. I see that you're using an external antenna here, but it doesn't seem to make it a great performer either.
    The D-808 does better, although it seems to catch much of some locally-generated noise.
    Anyway, you've clearly made your point here, the Qodosen is a MW champ, indeed.
    I really hope that the Qodosen folks watch your videos and read the comments, because you've obviously convinced several people to buy their radio ... and you did it for free. They should refund it to you at least
    😁 (edited)

      Hey Alain, thanks for your comment! Yes, I think on MW (and FM), the Qodosen is simply beyond compare in the portable-radio class. Someone mentioned in another comment here that part of the reason might be that the TEF 6686 chip must be extremely sensitive because it is used in cars. Cars drive around all the time, MW signals are not always strong everywhere that you are driving, so the chip must be able to pull in those signals and hold on to them. The TEF 6686 chip does this really well, which explains why on the Qodosen it also really pulls in distant and weaker signals where the other radios struggle.
      I do think both the Tecsun PL-368 and the XHDATA D-808 are quite excellent for MW listening. The PL-368 actually does perform quite well with an external MW antenna plugged in, if compared to "Before TEF 6686" 😁 The noise you hear on the D-808 is interesting, it's in exactly the same spot and being used at basically the same time as the Qodosen, which does not seem to catch this noise...
      The Qodosen has set completely new standards. Before, I would have been happy with something like the D-808. Now, I'm still happy with the D-808, but happier with the Qodosen. I still think it is also very good on weak shortwave signals and in many cases on stronger SW signals also. It hears things on SW that the other portables don't. But the difference on MW is much, much greater.
      If the Qodosen people see my reviews they can just send me one more radio, I will be happy with two 😂

    • @F4LDT-Alain
      @F4LDT-Alain 4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for your reply, André . I sure wish my car's manufacturer would have used this chip for the car radio because mine's not quite sensitive on FM 😆(MW band is gone from car radios since long ago here). Most people do praise the D-808 for MW reception but I've read much more mixed opinions on the PL-368. That noise on the D-808 might come from the LCD and its logic, although I've never experienced this on SW.
      Anyway can't wait to eventually put my hands on the SR-286. It has taken a long and slow path from China... (edited)

      @@F4LDT-Alain Looking forward to your videos with the Qodosen, I will be very interested to see what you receive at your listening location!
      Here we still have MW in cars, but my car, like yours, is not particularly sensitive on either FM or MW. Definitely not a TEF6686 chip 🙂
      True about the PL-368, it's MW performance is not excellent by any means, but I do think it is quite good on MW when using the little plug-in antenna it comes with. I would rate it below the D-808 and the Tecsun ICR-110 (really good on MW), but better than most of my other radios on MW. This is now, of course, excluding the Qodosen.

    For me the problem with MW DX to Europe or to other distant stations is that I live in Arizona USA and there are so many MW stations in Mexico on all frequencies including many blowtorch 50kW transmitters. I have to use radios with powerful ferrite loopstick antennas like marine RDF radios to null out Mexico in order to hear anything else. I might be able to build a large outdoor vertically-oriented square loop wire antenna with the null directed due south so I can hear Europe or at least MW stations on the US East coast. Mark

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey Mark, thanks for your comment! I am kind of jealous that you have so many MW stations coming through from Mexico, I'd love to catch some of those :-) But I understand your conundrum, it is a huge hassle when there are strong local or nearby signals, very hard to catch distant signals then. I have had that issue on some frequencies before, here in South Africa, but now we have so few MW stations left, most of the frequencies are clear. A good loop antenna that can null out Mexico will certainly help. I use the Tecsun AN-200, which is tiny but actually quite good, and it does null out interfering signals. Good luck with your antenna!

    You set Tecsun to work on MW with it's telescopic whip. That's why it shows MWSW and don't work with the loop when plugged.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your comment, this is true. But the AN-200 does work, on the other signal, the Mozambican one, you can clearly see how the signal changes on the Tecsun as I adjust the AN-200. For the AN-200 it doesn't matter if the radio is set to whip or ferrite, once the AN-200 is plugged in, it works. I've used it like this many times, and tested it with the whip on and off, makes no difference.
