hey fellow ship muso!! one of my favorite parts about ship life is meeting and hanging out with other musicians on ships!!! Whats some of the ships youve worked on??
Love the video. Really enjoyed it. 👏. I have a question. Can you play blues, rock as a Solo Musician on a Cruise Ship? I’m a solo musician who plays with tracks and mostly the Tourists circuit (all the hits, classics etc) but I do one gig a week where I get to play blues & rock etc and it’s my favourite gig of the week (as they are my favourite genres) and I was wondering if that’s possible to do on a cruise ship? I haven’t been on a cruise ship so I don’t know if there would be a demand for that type of gig?
it honestly was the best decision I ever made in my life. I cant wait for the cruises to come back in full swing! You should totally apply for the job when it comes back around
It's great. No curfew. Crew bar is fantastic. Of course the BAC limit is .05 off duty, but as long as you aren't acting like an imbecile there's never any problems! I always play the same venue. Start times between 9:00 and 9:45. I usually play 3 45 minute sets 6 nights a week. I can usually be in the crew bar by 12:30. I was supposed to be out of Sydney as we speak but I took a last minute contract out of San Juan PR. Home now and then off to FLL and then on to Europe for the summer. Always great to meet other solo guitarists because I'm always signing off at the same time the new guy is signing on. Lol
Oh man. That would have been epic if our ships were in sydney together. Fun meet up. But ya San Juan is beautiful! I have similar sets as well, sometimes only 2 sets. But good to know it’s not as strict as the rumors were, or maybe I was thinking of Disney cruises lol
Ya that would be rad!!! Funny about Disney!!!! I think that’s what I was thinking of as musicians not liking . Ya keep in touch if you come out this way let me know. Where is home for you?
Very cool. I love the quick jump style. I am a Singer/Guitar player playing live for 25 yes. I'm retiring from my day job soon and this would be a fun thing to try. Do you have a suggestion of songs to learn or a nyche that would be in demand?
I would suggest go through different decades and find the top songs... other than that I would take requests and if I heard multiple requests for the same song or artist that I didn’t know I would learn it ... but dang that’s awesome 25 years ... Congrats on quitting the day job... I remember when people laughed at me when I said I would do this for a living... but it is a great life :)
where is danny black Thanks, not quitting, retirement is coming. This looks like a perfect retirement plan after 25 years of police work. One more question, do you get days off at home during the contract or not?
Oh that’s fantastic. So when doing contracts on ships. You will do 4 - 6 months depending on the cruise line. If you live in Florida and are on a ship out of Florida you can get off at the home port for 5-6 hours... but as far as days off to go home you won’t have that. At all the ports and such you have the days off to go discover and see new things, only playing 3-4 hours each night
If you don't mind me asking, how long are your contracts? how often do you get them? - just got off the Pacific Aria and I'd love to work on a cruise once I'm 21. Did you need any qualifications or previous music related jobs to land the contract? Cheers.
hey! so sorry I missed this comment until now. (youtube doesn't make it so easy) but I would be happy to help you on any questions. as far as contracts.. I'm assuming you live in Australia because you were just on the Aria... but you would have to do a contract out of Australia (Australians on Australia ships isn't allowed for tax reasons... lame I know) but if you can play songs and entertain small crowds you can do this job with your eyes closed! just let me know when you are 21 and start building your music catalog and ill point you in the right directions!!! cheers
Hi! Loved your video 😍 Can you please tell me how you applied for a job on a cruise as a musician?? It would be a dream come true to have the opportunity to work as a singer there.
ya I've been getting that question a lot... maybe ill make a video about it. but if you send me an email DANNYBLACK@ME.COM ill send you to the right people
Thanks for the video! :) Also.... As a classical music flutist, do you know if it's possible for me to audition by my own? Or do I need to come on with an established group?
+Talas hi. Thanks for the compliment. If you are looking to play with a group or maybe if you find another musician and make some type of a duo. All ships go through agencies to hire so I can give you a couple of email addresses for agencies and ask what they think for that position.
Hey dude I love your content!!! I'm interested in being a piano bar/ solo musician on a cruise. I have gauges that aren't too big, and a forearm tattoo sleeve on my left arm that is definitely noticable Will this cause a problem when trying to land a job in this arena?
I have a tattoo on my forearm ... and I never said I had it in the interview process. For the most part you can wear long sleeves when you perform, but I’ve shown my tattoo many times and no one has said anything
Ya different staff have different rooms. But for the most part they will have 2 people to a room that size but have it organized so it’s not to small. This company was p&o Australia
Hi there Danny! Hope you don't mind some questions from a musician pal. I'm planning to audition so as to get a cruise gig and wanted to know how that process changes when its a trio. Singer + piano + acoustic guitar. You prepare a large repertoire and they just choose songs? I would owe you A LOT for any advice you may have for us based on your experience!! Thank you so much for making this available to us all!! Cheers!
Hey I’ll be happy to help. If you can do me a favor and check out one of my most resent videos “tips for working on ships” that might give you some insight and then email me whereisdannyblack@gmail.com and I can get you in touch with the right people
hi thanks for asking.. I use Final Cut Pro X to edit my videos... I love it, I'm sure theres better stuff out there, but I've actually been using this program for like 15 years
Hi I just came across this channel. What ship is this? What sort of food options foo they feed crew members? Do you get to eat the same food that guests eat?
This ship is now called the cmv Columbus, it was the Pacific Pearl at the time I was on it. When working on ships in different positions you get different privileges like eating where the guests eat or not. However all ships and cruise lines are different. Sometimes the food is better in the crew mess, sometimes it’s better where the guests eat
Oh okay I believe the CMV Columbus is Australian based. For newly hired crew members from Canada what costs will new hired need to consider? I don't suppose the cruise line covers flight and transportation to get to the cruise ship? Which cruise lines and ships serve great food to crew members who are waiter or servers? I personally have food and beverage experience, so naturally I am curious.
Hi great vlog! I'm interested in having a gig on a cruise ship as a guitarist. Would I need as much sight reading as a drummer per say or other musicians?
+Thomas Justiniano ... so several options for guitar. There is usually a trio/jazz band on board that also doubles as stage musicians for fly on singers. That requires sight reading. But if you want to be a solo musician no reading required. Then there's also cover bands on board that would use a guitar player
Hi Danny It's nice video ! thanks! I'm going to be working in entertainment on Pacific Aria and I was just wondering about the flight ticket. Is it possible to modify the flight ticket(date, departure, destination) when I travel back home after finishing my contract? I might want to travel. And Do you have any information about Aria? This is my first contract and It's bit nervous:)
Hi! Thanks for watching. I haven’t been on the aria but I hear it’s nice and your gonna have a great time!! As far as modifying your ticket home, when you are on talk to the crew office and they have a form you can fill out and send in and try to get approved, it’s not always a guarantee but sometimes it happens

Hey, Is there an age limit on musicians (guitar/harmonica/mandolin/bass - not professionally trained thou)?
I don’t think there is a limit as long as you are capable to do your job. I know other musicians who were in their 50s
Do you have to stick to one job , or do you do multiple jobs.?
Just one job... but also have to do (not often) emergency drills
is the food the same everyday and night for musicians?
Nope there’s a buffet of different varieties
Please answer me,how old were you when you first got the job, thanks a lot!
