What college major should you study to do

There's a bit of danger to studying physics... 😱⬇
Real talk: I found that by studying physics, I could transition into computer science roles, data science, and machine learning - with additional study! But, it's way harder to break into fields as a fresh graduate with this. So if you KNOW you want to do coding, then study computer science because it will be MUCH easier to get a coding role.
Physics is the ideal choice if you want to do deep research and you KNOW you want to get a PhD. A lot of research roles require a PhD, or at least a masters.
But really, we need people from all different fields to work on quantum computing.
Computer scientists and engineers are needed to build applications and middleware all up and down the stack.
If you want to work on the hardware, electrical engineers specializing in RF are important for superconducting technologies. We also need mechanical engineers who are great in machine shops and those with specialties in thermal analysis.
Now, if you’re already done with your undergrad, Master’s programs are being released at some universities, like USC, that take people with all sorts of backgrounds and teach you all parts of quantum technology.
So study what you find interesting!

I am a research mathematician myself. Sorry to tell you folks in the comments section that today's Modern Physics does not look for the Truth but idolizes fantasy mathematical structures. The sad reality is that physics had its last real contribution with De Broglie's work in 1924.
Quantum Computing will never work under QED. The theoretical and practical solution to build Quantum Computers is elsewhere.

Answers about the real world often lie in theory. No one thought roots of negative numbers would ever be useful but then came the wave equation. And what the frick do you mean? Are you just gonna ignore the whole Los Alamos project? Nukes are in my opinion the biggest game changer in geopolitics in the last 100 years.
