- Troye Sivan accepts GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 1. His powerful acceptance speech resonated with all who heard it as Sivan honored LGBTQ activists like Bayard Rustin, Edie Winsor, and Marsha P. Johnson and left the audience with the empowering words: “don't let anyone strip you of your truth and love because those are the foundations of who we are as a community." Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Tranter presented.
The Stephen F. Kolzak Award which is presented to an LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.

I cried. What a heartfelt and moving speech. I'm so proud of Troye and this is the best speech I have ever heard. Thank you Troye. Thank you for enlightening people and encouraging love amongst our community and stressing the importance of remaining visible. I will never forget this speech and shall hold it close to my heart. The importance of loving people for their true selves is fundamental to our lives. I hope that because of you and the people who have come before you there are many people who have learnt this and have embraced their families, friends, colleagues and others with love, compassion and kindness for who they really are. More than one of my previous managers were homophobic to me in the workplace, and I live in England, UK. I left those jobs partly because of this bullying. No one has a right to make someone feel ostracized because of who they are, it is painful and hurtful. Many workplaces lose a lot of people because of their own prejudice amongst staff, and lose a lot of experienced and productive people in the process which is detrimental to them also. Hate is detrimental to families, people reject their own children because of their sexual orientation and gender identities which can cause a lifetime of hurt for all those involved. I feel lucky for having had parents who loved me for who I really am. I hope that many parents and others see this speech and that it helps to change their minds and understand what love and equality really mean. Thank you GLAAD for this video.

That mid-part of your speech reminded me how back in 1994 I wanted to work in an AIDS home. My parents refused to let me go. I needed their support to do it. They were convinced I would get HIV just touching or being near the residents. I was so upset. Funny part, later that year I met a young man who became infected, his mother kicked him out of the house and had no where to live, and was very sick; he moved in with me for several months until he found something permanent. I got my wish after all .... to give support to a grossly misunderstood disease and community who were unfairly blamed.

Its very easy to ignore things like cruelty to LGBTQs and all. A common mentality of a LGBTQ person would be like, 'Ok! So much cruelty?! Fine, I should hide myself'. But they don't know that by hiding, they aren't just affecting themselves, but also the hundreds and thousands like them. But fighting is not for cowards.. Opposing the people's mindsets needs guts! And this man, Mr. Troye Sivan is full of it. Like many, I literally had goosebumps while hearing his speech.. I've seen many posting their 'Coming Out!' video and feeling sad.. representing themselves.. But not many represent or even think about representing everyone like them..
