She's about 13 1/2 years old now. None of my dogs liked boxes either, a black lab mix we had since she was about 10 weeks old who lived to 13 1/2, and currently a Cursinu (a brindle colored lab sized hunting dog) that we've had since she was 11 months old and is now 4+ years old. All my animals are afraid and unsure of boxes, even when we put treats and toys in them, and even play with the boxes ourselves. They just don't like them and especially don't like being in them.
I think it's interesting that the smaller the "big cats" are, the more likely they seem to be to treat boxes as places to curl up in, like housecats do. Do the larger species just not have that same need to be in a tight space, I wonder?
Small wild cats have the instinct to want to curl up in something to hide since they are never at the top of the food chain. Bigger species are apex predators and do not have to worry about being hunted.
N Brasher it’s more about the size of the box ... these cats would’ve gotten in and reacted similarly had their body weight & strength not altered things and had the boxes been more size appropriate where they just fit and can scale the side without it tipping over, theyd have behaved more like the domesticated cats.
Living in a house with three cats, I can only tell you ONE difference from this video and my life with cats, it's that my cats aren't strong enough to tear boxes apart.

Jade clearly wants her box to be mobile so she'd like some wheels for her trailer home. Cameron took one look at Zabu's interest and thought "Oh no! More redecorating! Time to find a bush and hide." From what I've seen so far in BCR videos the Tigers are the sanctuary's top demolition experts. They roll in and flatten boxes in record time.

+Christine Puhl Our enclosures have multiple sections. We lock the big cats in one section so we can safely enter the section we want the enrichment to go in.
Ares Cougar = my housecat Jake with box behavior. I call it 'making puzzle pieces' and 'stapling' with his teeth into the box. :) It's hard to pick a favorite, but I love the cougars. Especially Mickey
When I worked for a pump retailer, we used to get shipments from a supplier in huge boxes, about two yards square by a yard high, 3/4 inch corrugated cardboard. I wish I knew where you might find one or two of those for your tigers!
Ares rips it up,.....then Orion gives that look that says "Hey, dude, I was gonna sit in that." But no matter what, big cat or small, give it a box and they turn into a kitten. You can hear the big cats saying "My toy!!!!"
I wonder if there is a Toyota/Lexus place nearby that donates their boxes to the cats. Good on them and will remember next time I'm shopping for a car lol
It is remarkable that all of these diverse felines have evolved the same behavior traits in response to something that their ancestors would have never encountered in nature.
The more i watch these videos the more i love Cougars and Tigers they are just the most playful and so full of energy like most domesticated cats I've had over the years. As much as i don't like FL i def want to go to Big Cat Rescue one day to see this place in person wish all Zoo's would be done away with as they are just prisons and have more wonderful sanctuaries like this one to allow animals to live with freedom and love they deserve.
Cats tend to think 'Within the box', virtually all of them........at least until they decide to chew the box up. Then, they'll need another one, of course !

+Susette Soja Technically there is not. This happens when they received two recessive genes from their parents caused by inbreeding. This does not occur in the wild, and we are known to have the only two in the world.

My friend has a cat named Ares, he is orange. He doesn't understand food and you pretty much have to put a treat into his mouth while it is open for him to yell for a treat before he understands this is the treat he asked for. He won't hesitate to eat plastic, yarn, human food, cardboard, paper, the dog's food and once in a while things like soap. Pure orange cat intelligence, right there! We say "Ares only knows what food is when he's wrong" about him. He has a little brother who is not even 6 months old yet, and the kitten is already smarter than he is!
I luv what you do for the cats and i wonder how anyone can be so heartless to start hating. Haters are just like flies so never mind then haters shout your failures and whisper your success so keep that in mind

Big Cat Rescue actually they still have to worry .. especially when they’re outnumbered, have cubs or are up against even bigger cats.
