Very true. What Russell is effectively saying is that there's a lot of snobbery in jazz. Jazz purism. Which is ridiculous nowadays as jazz is no longer commercially viable, they have to make a living somehow.
Agreed, but it goes both ways. I grew up around a lot of rock players. When I got into jazz, because of the stereotype you mention, THEY became snobs toward ME.
