  • This week I'm taking a look at the cars owned by a few young people, who've chosen to take a different route to the usual Fiesta ST or Corsa VXR.
The first car in the series is this stunning Alpine White BMW 320i E30 - owned by mechanic and petrolhead Aidan.

I agree...I love the E30s with straight sixes. Better than a Fiesta ST in (almost) every way... right up to the point where a knob in a new car crashes into your E30 and turns you into a vegetable.
Sadly new cars carve into early 90s cars like a hot knife into butter when there is a collision, so better to drive carefully (also who wants to wreck what is basically a classic collectible?)

I know, I own one and drive it as much as I can, 1983 two door 320i, yes it is thirsty and even by the standards back then it was a bit lazy below the 4000 rpm mark but it is a gorgeous engine. Gearbox, suspension and steering are excellent as well and make an unmodified car already such a joy to drive. I've bought mine many moons ago when they were still pretty cheap, particularly the 320i because there was still quite a choice of 325i's back then and those really are a lot quicker. For young people it is getting harder to get into the 6 cylinder e30 and sharknose era bmw's because prices are getting pretty steep. When I got into the hobby you could still buy a fully loaded E28 m535i or a 635 Csi for about 4k...

I bought a 318i in 1990 and it is still running well. Probably one of the most well travelled E30s around, since I got it in South Africa, then shipped it to Europe when I moved there in 1994, drove it around Portugal, Spain, France, England and Scotland, then brought it over here to Australia in 2008.

Nice car! In Germany, most of these are toast now - literally "used up" as used cars by mostly youngish drivers - and the model's image has suffered from this. This has made them fairly expensive to insure for what they offer.

99.9% of the insurance companies had the car down as a 2.6ltr but there was one company who would insure it as a 1.3ltr 4 door. Insurance was only £700 a year too... Had some great fun in that car, and it really learnt me how to handle RWD and how to keep up with car maintenance.

Used to have a Renault twingo Gordini. Which was much loved for 8 years. But 3 years ago I got a 1990 rover mini city. It's understated class that gets me around these days. It's all I own and drive. It's has some huge pitfalls. You can't put anything in it. It won't comfortably cruise above 62 mph (but the brave can hit 90). But in return I pay next to no tax I can repair it by the side of the road (though it's damn reliable) and my insurance last year was £108. Parts are super cheap and easily obtainable. And I'm learning classic car mechanistry as I go along. You'd be more than welcome to come give it a test drive sometime.

I'm a bit older than the owner of this 320i, but I do own a Fiesta ST. I did arrive at it a bit backwards, however.
In my teens and early 20s I owned a 1989 Saab 900 16-valve and a Mk.III Golf modified for autocross. I followed that pair up with an '87 944S that I still own (the S is the 190ish horsepower 16-valve 944 that is generally forgotten by most enthusiasts).
After my Subaru winter car gave up the ghost, I bought a Fiesta ST as a winter car and occasional autocrosser.
Owning the older cars gave me a bit of perspective, and they help with your problem solving. The ST will make a pretty poor driver look like a hero, where as the 944 will punish your hubris. Losing a bit of inertia in the ST isn't a huge deal as you can ride the wave of turbocharged torque back up to pace pretty swiftly. In the 944, if you fall out of the fat part of the powerband it's all over.
I love my ST, but for sheer joy it can't hold a candle to the empirically inferior 944.

I'm driving a 1990 Audi 100 quattro Sport - I can attest to the fun but also the worries of finding parts and sometimes even finding out *what* is wrong. You need to find other lunatics who are experts, because even proper garages who are not just "OBD plug and replace" can struggle with older cars.
If you like working on your car and don't rely on it every day, go ahead and get one! If you want to "just" drive, maybe something in the 15 to 20 year range is a better choice?

    • @lanmastersassistant659
      @lanmastersassistant659 5 лет назад +1

This comment is so on the dot. The skills fade and lack of care at local garages is incredible. And I normally re-do the work myself after a visit. I have found a few places that care and suprisingly one of which is a wilco motosave. Maybe because it's a rarer car but they are sympathetic. But as I said before I just do almost all the work myself these days.

But for me, that is also the fun and exciting side of owning and driving this car, it motivates me to keep the old girl going. I bring it to a BMW specialist wich i know personally. the other side of the coin is, it is a BMW, with proper care and maintenance it does not break down on you. it is very reliable.

Love my e30 325i touring... after 20 years of ownership I’ve now been using it as a daily driver... prices of all E30s are going up... it’s quite nice driving around in a vehicle that for once isn’t depreciating in value! 😉👍

OUTRIGHT FAST, is not everything. Quality & Luxury MUST count in the thinking.
BUY CHARACTER & QUALITY before SPEED, No car is actually TOO SLOW These days unless you buy Grandmothers shopping car.
& that's bollocks, MY BEEMER is FAST & I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT !!
Any faster & your Brain cannot comprehend the road ahead Bends, Crests & junctions etc, AND other Traffic.
Remember other drivers ARE NOT RACING DRIVERS ON A CIRCUIT, Aware of their surroundings & other traffic. 90% are Asleep at the wheel, On the Fone or Drinking HOT COFFEE !! When U or I approach at 90 !! into a bend tail out.

Agreed - the moron that thinks......"it's alright, I know what I'm doing"........forgets the little considered fact that KNOW ONE ELSE KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE DOING. The result is they change lanes not realising you had planned to come in at a million miles per hr (especially that he can't see you doing it because......you come in at a million miles per hr) or you startle them and they make a sudden move that upsets your plans........and then they are the problem because they acted erratically.......!!! I’m currently refreshing the entire suspension, something I never thought I’d be capable of doing. If you’re wondering if an E30 is a good first car, I’d say yes- as long as you’re willing to work with your hands, spend a couple bucks, and work with your hands

NO e30 320's are ace. even a 316i Lux i had for ages was ACE ! IT's NOT ALL ABOUT total Power. !!!
      I Have currently 3 cars all e34's a 525 i SE manual, & a 520i SE man' & another 525i SE man'.
525 i Se Man, owned by me for almost 7 yrs.
520 i Se man' owned by me for 7 yrs.
525 i SE Minter than both the above FOR SALE. with Full MOT etc MINT ( almost )
My 520 i Se is a far more Pleasing & pleasant Car to Drive. I LOVE that car ! it's Magic !! BY far the worst condition of the 3 cars.
But i Like it the most . All are identical models / Same year etc.
I bought the 3rd one hoping to Fit all the best bits to it, But ? Like Totty on the Side. I Love my Existing cars. Really 2 Must GO but ?? I can't face to part with Either one 525 will go for sale long before my 520.
One 525 needs NO Paint corrections,
The Other is all FACTORY ORIGINAL PAINT.
the 520 needs a £Grand in the paint shop .
I own 2 of them for 7 years & the latest one is SUPERB but , I was Correct in the 1st place with my 2.
And I'm a Petrolhead Ex classic car dealer who FINALLY FOUND THE BEST 2 Cars in my life. ( well 3, but one must go. ) NOT the 520.
BHP is not everything. I look at how many times i Go 100% Flat to the floor in the 525 and need all the power to burn off a plonker & i think i will Overtake him up hill or MID BEND when i see it's clear.
The 520 leaves them looking very silly.
      Do i Want a 535 = NO What for ?
Do I want a V8 540 ? NAH Shite engines . Fast yes . IF they work ? Nicasil bores etc . Engineering FAILURE !! Same as V8 XJ8 Jaguars.
540 V8's are TRAILER QUEENS ONLY. No-one dare use them.
Better with an ' M5 ' at twice the price.

@@A1DJPaul Whilst I generally agree a BMW has to have a straight 6 for me and I'd prefer the 325i over the 320i. Would hardly call a 325i remotely powerful by todays standards :D That said, this example sounds utterly superb and I'd also like to experience a 318iS too - suspect they feel lightweight and nimble but with enough power still.
Your E34 collection sounds very intresting, keep hold of as many as you can for as long as you can - they're only getting harder to find in good shape and mark a highlight in BMW's production quality in my opinion.

the 320 is approx 130 bhp, 325 app' 170 bhp.
      M50 520i = 150 bhp. 525i= 192 bhp as standard Factory.
The Famous 535 is only 218 bhp. or a 635.
      old 528i = 170 bhp.
No you probably do not want 318I S . A very desirable car, with the M40 16 Valve unit. 140 bhp 4 cyl.
Compared to other e30 the suspension is FULL on Shake your fillings out ROCK Hard Ride, ZERO COMFORT, & NOT a car i would drive 10 miles in.
I would run it on Lux / SE Suspension.
It's all HYPE & not a car to bother with. PAY the Fuel & buy a real E30 320i / 325i. even a 316 i 1600 is a fantastic car & yes i would buy one any day. They feel loads quicker than you would think. BMW DO NOT MAKE A SLOW CAR ! or one to Avoid. except the 318 IS.
A Rover V8 3.5 is only approx 135 bhp. The power is in the Torque on a Rover.
A Capri 2.8 Inj is only approx 150 bhp.
3.0 Stag 115 bhp just sounds nice.
      2.0 dolly sprint 115 bhp.
