Gah this is something I have been wondering about loads the past year. So glad you did the hard work and sent it off to a lab. Thanks for posting this - I'll look forward to seeing the update on progress, especially finding out eventually whether or not a "cured" plant that becomes sick again doesn't become re-infected. If that's possible then there's hope

Will definitely share an update later this year. Fingers crossed!

Very good information, I have 2 tridents that have the same problem. This video is the first one that I see someone share the same problem. I tried a few things to attack the issue but nothing works, i used mancozeb, cercobin, and change the soil, if anybody knows how to fix this that's going to be a big thing. I can't wait for the the next video to see any good result.

Watchout for mites also... I'm having this issue here, and I was in fact suspecting of an fungus problem, some mites also shown up, so I'm treating for both... I am not going to believe that you can't cure it, there are systemic anti-fungi, and well, eventually the tree will drop the leaves... In my case it shown up on the second flush, an local nursery (that has ONLY maples) told me they treat tridents for mites on a schedule (bifentrin), and that works... I'm using that and just started a treatment with a systemic anti-fungi based on "difenoconazol"... Gonna try to update you.

I got this also on my two tridents that I have been growing from seed. I have been told it was anthracnose or verticillium but was never 100% confident about the diagnosis. They did not quite fit the description of the symptoms. The symptoms show up strong in spring when the tree is flushing and tend to disappear or become less prominent during summer onwards... I assumed that the warmth and drier weather helped with the fungus infection, but maybe it's because it gets stronger. Here in Europe it's not that easy to get all the sort of chemicals you guys have access to in the US, especially if you are not a certified farmer (as is my case). I tried lime sulphur, copper oxychloride, hydrogen peroxide and a systemic available to wider public last year, but it's showing symptoms again this year... :(

Yeah. The symptoms are variable. I forgot to mention in the video that my sample came back with Pythium in roots also. Jonas and I have been debating if the phoma actually causes the leaf symptoms since we normally see that margin burn is caused by root issues, where fungal infections cause spots or lesions in the leaves.

Any update on this issue that you could share with us?

Thanks for the question / reminder. I do still have both these trees. They were quite weak in the fall, so I was thinking that it was going to be bad news, but so far the spring flush of growth on both are looking really good. They are both leafing a bit earlier than I expected, but the growth is looking good so far.
I think I will do a follow-up video, but I'm going to wait until I have a bit more of a look at how things do in the next month.

@@Bonsaify okay great, I hope they continue to do well. I have one that I have been fighting with for two years now, I think. It flushes out in spring fine with healthy leaves but each flush after that seems to get worse. The new growth will look good at first but after a few days the new leaves turn black on the outer edges and the leaves become deformed. Keep us updated if you learn anything else that might be helpful. Thanks for sharing. :)

Is it possible to grow trident maple at a temperature of 20-30 degree celsius....

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 года назад

Yes, that seems about right. However the humidity is also important. As is seasonal variation in temperature....

I live in Australia and it can get as hot as 45 degrees Celsius (or a bit higher in a heat wave). It's a little humid where I am, and my Japanese maples and tridents are growing well.
I just make sure to keep up the watering, keep them in mostly shade (they get a little dappled morning sun in summer) and if it's really hot and they're looking droopy then I actually bring them inside and put them in the bath where it's cool and no direct sunlight (I have a VERY understanding mum 😁).
They struggled a little in their first summer but have been great the last 2 and grew like crazy!
Until they got a fungal disease that looks the same as in this video..
But they did continue to grow and some even almost recovered in the second half of the growing season... I'm worried what will happen to them this spring though... my liquid amber also got it..
Oh also my maples hate the wind, especially on new leaves.
      Good luck! They're beautiful trees 🌳 🍁
P.s. I've been advised to keep them in a tray of water to increase humidity if need be (raised up so the roots aren't soaking though)
