Oh my God, this brings back very fond memories of working Pool 6 out of SLO. So many I worked with are gone now. Barney Brown, Chuck Johnson, Dick Hadley, Dean Russum and so many others. Miss the days of running the Coast SLO-LA.
Great footage brings back memories of working the Coast pool. Great coverage of Skull rock, deadmans curve, Grover, Callendar, Narlon, Surf, Honda, Arlight and Sudden, Drake, Summerland, Wave (nude beach), Punta, LaConchita, Seacliff, Dulah, Taylor Ranch, Ventura Jct., Oxnard, Leesdale, love the 60mph, Camarillo siding, 9613 the GP60s had loud turbos, Lagol, Edison spur, Strathern, Hasson the helium spur, tunnel 26 6,907 feet long, tunnel 27 the Disneyland tunnel, dynamic brakes are in operation, tunnel 28, .great video!
Wow this is amazing footage deadhead82! I was just SEVEN years old living in SLO around this time this footage was shot! Man I remember seeing SP's last days running freights up and down the coast sub! My elementary school at the time I went to from 1996-2000 was RIGHT next to the coast sub! Great memories! Thanks for sharing this rare footage!
Love this video. As a life long ESpee fan on the east coast...i absolutely enjoyed this. Your views of the 2 tunnel motors and GP60 bring it all together. Thanks for sharing a great memory of yours.
That's peculiar, because I thought that's where all the SP and UP freight going north was going, because we hardly see two trains a day on the valley floor. (Through Fresno) unless it's BNSF.
@@michaelmorgan7893Between San Diego and Anaheim there are no UP trains. Only BNSF, Metrolink, Amtrak, and the Coaster. We run two eastbound and two westbound freight trains per day, plus the Escondido local. The rest are passenger.
Absolutely beautiful footage. I worked in Ventura for 6 years and shot the crap out of the line when UP was running the oilcans and autorack empties along with the Guadalupe haulers. It’s really unfortunate they rarely utilize it.
Who would have thought it was the beginning of the end of fun railroading. Nothing but TO/PTC half automated trains now and douche management. Glad I got out when I did. Miss the work but not the environment corporate created. Cool video for sure.

I always love watching these videos to see what Ventura looked like back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Makes me sad that the Coastline is rarely used for anything other than Amtrak and a few locals.

GREAT VIDEO. FUN RIDE....THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS UP........ S.P. LIVES!!!
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you!
Lead unit #8230 would be renumbered to 8782 by the UP. It showed up a couple of times at the Lathrop Intermodal Facility, where I got to run it.
At 1:00 he blew a switch. Unless that's ok to do. But clearly wasn't lined.
Spring switch
Spring switches are marked by the little white sign.
Beg to differ. Take a closer look. The last few good frames clearly show the points lined for the mov.e.
Nice video, anyone know how many trains per day if this line is even open still?
At 1:03 that wasn’t isn’t lined up for you.I’m surprised you didn’t derail.

Was this southbound from San Luis Obispo?... or northbound?
Southbound
@@deadhead82 Thought everything at this time was either Westbound or Eastbound referenced to San Francisco.
