Can you do like a week of cheap crockpot dinners ?
Just goes to show people don't need to starve if they put on an inventive and frugal mindset, you are a genius with all this Christine. Maybe you could offer your services to people who need to learn these skills to feed their families. Some people really don't know where to begin, and have next to nothing to spend a lot of the time. You'd be a real blessing to them
I think she does by putting out these videos
Yes true, but I meant those who don't have Internet, people below the poverty line or in Shelters , struggling to get decent meals on the table for their families
@@angelika_munkastrap4634 They probably know how to buy food at the dollar store. Poor people are not stupid. Remember Christine and her family are not poor, they are middle class with middle class things like a car, time to shop, gadgets galore at home, ample freezer space, job security....
@@TheStackofbooks True for all that you said, but maybe like me they also need to learn better meal planning skills. She's really great at that and using foods across multiple meals. My brain always goes off on tangents, so I don't always think further ahead.
@@christinescott5002 when I ran a food pantry in NJ, I gave out a series of books to stimulate ideas.
- A Man, A Can & A Plan
- A Man, A Can & A Microwave
- A Man, A Can & A Grill
The Recipients had alot of fun reading and creating.
The books, also, taught different types of kitchen skills, kitchen equipment & tools to have/use and additional pantry items to have on hand.
Good meals were had by many, Bon Appetit
My local grocery store had an “overstock” sale...dried beans for .49 a pack, 10 lb bags of rice for $1.99!!! Pasta for .19! Love your channel so I know what to do with everything I just stocked up on!
When my stores have sales like that,i super stock up! No sense in running out!💚💜
I live in Portland. Stores around here don’t care about selling overstock. They refuse to give amazing sale prices, and they sell their overstock to grocery outlet, where it’s still expensive. I mean, grocery outlet will sell beans and rice for the same price as anywhere else. I wish I lived in an area with low prices. You’re über blessed 💖
@@milkteanomnom that sounds like my area of my town. We get some pretty soggy deals.
Cans of veggies that USED to be only be around .54 are now $1.85 or so. Its frustrating when youre on a budget.
Maelui Yumiko Same here in Tacoma too.
@@rebeccahherdener2068 the UN has been saying there's going to be a worldwide food shortage this year so please stock up!
When little red riding hood discovers the dollar store....
Perfect 🤭😆
LOL‼️She's sooooo cute!
😆
I was going to say the same thing. Lol
Yes! I had to see if anyone else thought this. Lol
If you find that your beans are soupy or the juice is a bit loose, an easy way to thicken it is to grab a serving spoon full of beans, then either mash them with a fork or blend in a bullet, put the mashed beans back in the pot, increase the flame on your burner and you'll notice that it will begin to thicken.
Jessica Navstone She added too much extra water is why it was liquidy. If she went with her original plan, it probably would have been almost right.
@@PhoenixFires9 Definitely... what I shared is a tip/trick I use to thicken my beans when it is too soupy for my liking.
It’s a good tip too! 😊
Agreed. And I wouldn't have rinsed them either. That's the flavor and thickener right there. And if you add some baking soda they'll get super soft faster. Works great with older beans too.
Love these budget meals because that means I can have over 6 meals for $6. Great for single people who don’t mind eating repeats!
I wonder if you could find a good way to freeze individual servings. Great to bring to work, or let thaw in the fridge the night before.
@@jessicamessicaYT if you make this I would freeze in only the bean and soup part and Cook the rice freshly but you can freeze cooked rice but I like it better freshly cooked.
Dont you eat 6 days for 6 dollar as she made 12 servings you could just add oat meal or rice porrige from the leftover rice. And adding ketchup might be good if you have the dollar for it.
The bag of rice contain around 15 servings according to Swedish goverments food portion recomendations.

Red bean and rice cassarole with left overs, mix it together in 11 x 14 add cheese on top bake and serve with sour cream. Whole new meal! Great job
Great idea 😊
To the people reading this: have a wonderful day/night and stay safe during these hard times 😷🧤🙏.
Have a cookie to feel better 🍪
I hope you do too ☺️🍪
Thanks! You too! I’ll have a gluten free cookie 🍪
You too 😊
I love you, I needed that smile.
You have a wonderful day to. Maybe we should have 2 cookies. Life has been tough for everyone 💜
Pro tip: if you can’t afford a crock pot check out thrift stores! Make sure you wash it before you use it :)
I just got one for $15!!!
Don't forget estate sales. I bought a bread maker for $1 at one, and it worked.
I love thrift stores! Toaster ovens, blenders, pre loved knit blankets a grandma gave her grandchildren, it’s all there!
Yup
Small appliances at thrift stores have been a life saver for me more than once.
She’s so excited she’s slapping the groceries on the counter it’s so cute
creepy
Uncle tony's is a MUST In my house but I had no clue it existed until I started watching your channel ☺️ so I am forever grateful for you
Same!
Tony's been my friend for years but I must admit.... When I saw Christine cooks with it I felt like her food was good.
This is amazing, my son chooses to live on the streets but has a room to stay if he wants. He has little funds. I will try this week to teach him that he can eat healthy at the dollar store. My son has mental health issues. I always buy expensive food for him but a huge thank u for this learning, Canada Ontario
Hugs and BLESSINGS to you and your son.
I used to live in Ontario Canada too. I was married to a Canadian. My ex BIL stayed at the men’s mission in London, until he overdosed on a fentyl patch. He also had mental health issues.
This is actually very similar to the Brazilian national dish “feijoada”. We use black beans and an assortment of pork parts to do it. The side dishes are rice (duh), collard greens, farofa (toasted and seasoned yuca flour) and orange slices!
Love the idea of orange slices
i love brazilian food. i eat this at the place on my street in NYC before covid made restaurants close. hopefully it will come back
I love feijoada! I had it in Brasil years ago!
I love that you realistically showed the servings by first feeding your family and then seeing what was leftover. That really was a lot of food for the money.
Yo! You gotta rinse those beans! There could be non bean debris in there, watch out.
Yeah, I once had like five tiny rocks at the bottom of a pot of drained beans. I didn't see them in the package but they must have been there.
Yes. Sometimes its dirt, sometimes its rocks, sometimes its bean pieces that are inedible. No matter-pick through the beans first. Then rinse at least twice.
oh this comment is a life saver ive gonne without rinsing i also learned the floating beans are bad beans too :)
like if u let them soak in water and there are floating beans before you cook take those bad beans out
She’s white duh. Washing/rinsing during cooking isn’t apart of her thang.
Yes to ten dollars! Yes to the red beans and rice. Girl, that looked so good. Thank you for sharing! Blessed be!!
Right?! I wanted some of that food 😋
U can make perfect rice in the instant pot..oil in the bottom of the pot..equal amount of water to rice..salt to taste..rice button or 15 minutes on manual depending on your instant pot..that’s it!! I don’t cook rice any other way..I hope this helps someone 💕
Oil on the bottom? I never tried that, is it so it doesn’t stick to the bottom, or is a taste thing?
@@KarenDriscoll-Scrapbyscrap I sometimes fry my rice in a bit of oil before pouring water in and cooking it 'normally'. Maybe it's a similar thing? I personally find that the rice tastes better that way. 😏
works with Basmati, definitely not with parboiled rice:
small pot with a tightly closing lid on the stove, 1 part of rice, two parts of water, salt, lid on. Heat until the rice is really cooking, turn off stove (induction: 1-2, 20 mins) and leave the pot alone for at least 20 minutes.
Done.
You can put some butter or (tasty) oil into the pot at the beginning, do not really fry the dry rice in it but rather cover the whole rice with a thin layer of warm butter or oil before you add salt and water and proceed as above.
You can fry thin, short rice noodles in the oil or butter until they are dark brown (not black!), proceed as above but use chicken or veggie broth instead of water. That's basic Pilav and goes fantastic with most oriental dishes, fried chicken, mixed veggies. Add saffron and raisins to the rice make it really posh.
@@KarenDriscoll-Scrapbyscrap I do that when I make Mexican rice. You pan fry the rice in a little vegetable oil and get it a little translucent before you add your liquid (in that case it would be chicken broth (or chicken bullion and water), and some kind of tomato product). I'm pretty sure it's a taste thing. It might also help the rice from absorbing too much liquid but I'm no too sure about that part
RobinFlysHigh thank you Robin, I appreciate the info!!
Fellow Cajun here. Saw the sausage and rice, knew exactly where it was going!
Yes on the Raisenets!
Especially in Rice Pudding.
I love these videos, it's almost like a version of that show "Chopped". So creative and fun!
Definitely Team Raisinets! They’re actually one of my favorite “candies”? 🤔 of all time!
I would love to see your favorite frugal meals (with all your ingredients) and then breakdown what they ended up costing and if they were as cheap as you predicted. So basically, making your favorite meals but not limiting your budget so we can see what they actually cost. I hope that made sense.
Hey Christine! I would love love love some vegetarian-friendly freezer meal ideas :)
Yes me too!
I have a vegetarian at my house. That would be awesome
I would love that!!!
Yes! No meat at our house.
Yes!!!
Raisinets are the BEST candy to mix with popcorn. I love the combo so much I get the wildest midnight cravings for it.
Totally made red beans and rice yesterday. I'm with you on the small red beans.
Do It On A Dime - Kathryn’s Dollar Tree is huge. It’s easily twice the size of any of the others in the area!! So don’t feel bad.
I love these videos! You are so relatable for working moms, busy families, just awesome to watch!
Love watching these challenges. Thanks for showing what can be done when you’re on a budget.
Those little bins with the handles are probably my favorite DT organization item. I use them in the fridge, for art/school supplies and just about anything you put in a drawer. But my favorite use so far has been to use them to hold spice jars. Just grab one and pull it out, no reaching past jars and knocking jars down.
Wow, those dried beans used to be 24 oz before the Rona.
I love it when you do these Dollar Tree challenges. I think they’re my favorite.
I love those containers. Use them in my fridge and pantry for organization. 😊
I love Do it on a Dime too. But her Dollar Tree is magical; my local one is not that well stocked!
Magical lol.
Gotta have Uncle Tony's and Old Bay in the pantry to make so many yummy meals.
Grateful for all of your budget videos. I really think it’s a great ministry opportunity.
I really hope anyone who is struggling gets inspiration and feels hope from this.
Keep being you, Christine!
Looks like a good meal. Thank you for sharing, Christine!
I love these challenges amazing job keep it up
Hey now! I have everything to make red beans & rice! That's what we're having for dinner now, thanks Frugal Fit Mom!
This video makes me so happy, and also feel super nostalgic. When my partner and I first started dating, we were broke students, spending way too much money on taking transit across the city to see one another. If we spent the night at his bug-infested barely-one-bedroom apartment, we would then scrape together all the change we had, visit the Dollarama down the street to grab granola and soy milk, and then hit up the bodega to buy whatever cheap fruit they had to cut up on the side.
Homemade gnocchi is super cheap and easy to make (you can even use instant potatoes) and they're like little fluffy pillows to chew.
Raisinets are bomb especially the dark chocolate ones, yum!
I really like how you make home cooked meals and share your recipes. I hope this inspires families to save money and cook healthier meals at home.
Looks perfect for a cold rainy day! 🌧 I would love to see a video on how you organize your fridge
You are a delight to watch and listen too Im so glad I discovered you on youtube Thanks for all your insight!
When Speedy started barking, my dog started barking back 😂
All the love for red beans and rice! None at all for raisinettes and gnocchi
Oh my goodness, I was getting ready to make this! I challenge myself to do dollar tree dinners all the time.
I need to make this! My hubby would love this dinner! Tyfs!!
Absolutely on team raisinet!! They're so good!
I always mash my beans with a potato masher. It makes it the right consistency. Then I add the meat ( usually smoked ham hocks, which I cooked with the beans).
The frozen fish at dollar tree was a pleasant surprise...I eat them for my keto lunch
I love you. In the kitchen comfy. Feeding the family. Kids are well behaved and clean 🧼
You are soooooo fun for a mom!!! I love your personality. You make being a mom easier for me ...like a pep coach
Anyone else screaming “Christine don’t put the tomatoes in the fridge!!!” 🤣 Always love these. However, I honestly feel like I can do better at Walmart for many of the reasons you mentioned, including bigger bags for the same price. Also, my dollar tree doesn’t have a freezer section.
Agreed! I took my oldest kid on a shopping spree in late August to show him how to grocery shop and find the better deals. He already knows how to cook, but needed some help on how not to go broke buying food. Groceries is probably the budget that can get blown up the easiest!
So true! Depending on where you’re at this might be the only option unfortunately :( But Shopping at actual grocery stores is usually more affordable
I was screaming “rinse your dry beans at least and make sure there aren’t any stones mixed in them”!!!!
Dollar Tree can often be beat on unit price, but if you're searching your couch cushions to find money to buy food with, you're not thinking about unit prices and having a stocked pantry. You're thinking how can I not go to bed starving tonight?
@@DaphneGoldfish while thats true, you can often help yourself out by trying to think beyond "one more meal!". I got tired of trying to make A MEAL once every day because we had so little. So i got off my bum, went searching for better prices for more quantity, and started trying to save a wee bit more.
Its been helpful and gotten my family of 5 through some tough times.
Ive found that often more than not, its about the effort youre willing to expend to ensure you DONT go hungry, that makes the difference. I HATE being out of food. Havent been since i changed my ways.
Had you mashed up some of the beans when they done it would have made the finished product creamy and less soup like
These are my absolute fav videos!! Thank you!
I love the can organizers. Use them for everything especially snacks for kids
I know you did a food box before but I wish you could do a disaster relief box, I live in Louisiana and last week we got hit by hurricane Laura. They handed out bottled water and relief boxes that contained assortment of foods and toiletries. The boxes contained very cheap priced foods such as 2 15oz cans chili, 1 15oz can sweet peas, 1 15oz can corn, 1 can of green beans, 2 cans luncheon loaf, 1 10.5 oz pork n beans, a box of 4 ct saltine crackers, 6 cans Vienna sausages, 13oz box instant mashed potatoes, 16oz quick oatmeal, 6 fruit n grain breakfast bars, 2 15.5oz cans pinto beans, 2 15oz cans spaghetti o’s, 2 14.5oz cans chicken n dumplings, 30 oz can chili Mac, 2 beef stew, 4 cans tuna, 1 32oz jar grape jelly, 2 cans of pears in light syrup, 16oz bag par boiled rice, 20oz sugar, 18oz creamy peanut butter, 1.75 oz instant coffee, 16 oz elbow macaroni, 13oz dry milk, 8 singles cherry drink mix, and a 24 ct case of water. I’d love to see a video on that. I absolutely love your videos. I’m curious as to how long a relief box would last your family and how many meals you could make out of it.
I split your list for easier reading.
2 15oz cans chili
1 15oz can sweet peas
1 15oz can corn
1 can of green beans
2 cans luncheon loaf
1 10.5 oz pork n beans
box of 4 ct saltine crackers
6 cans Vienna sausages
13oz box instant mashed potatoes
16oz quick oatmeal
6 fruit n grain breakfast bars
2 15.5oz cans pinto beans
2 15oz cans spaghetti o’s
2 14.5oz cans chicken n dumplings
30 oz can chili Mac
2 beef stew
4 cans tuna
1 32oz jar grape jelly
2 cans of pears in light syrup
16oz bag par boiled rice
20oz sugar
18oz creamy peanut butter
1.75 oz instant coffee
16 oz elbow macaroni
13oz dry milk
8 singles cherry drink mix
24 ct case of water
Some ideas I had based on the list you gave.
With those oats plus PB&J, you can make PB&J oatmeal for quite a few breakfasts. There's no bread, so that sounds like a good way to use them up (and get in some protein with the peanut butter). The fruit and grain bar can go with breakfast or be a snack (depending on age of children in the household/hunger levels).
The rest of the food seems very lunch/dinner oriented. Premade meals (the chili mac and spaghetti o's) could probably just be eaten as is. I've never had those, so I'm not sure how to prepare them. I'm not sure if the beef stew is a premade meal or not based on your description.
Since the noodles and the potatoes could be used as dinner/lunch carb, I'd say save the rice and fruit cans and make a fruit&rice pudding. Having dessert to maintain normalcy during a natural disaster would probably be really helpful for kids/families. Or you could switch it up and do fruit oatmeal and have PB&J rice pudding.
For the noodles, you could make some kind of casserole or one pot dish of veggies, meat, and macaroni. For the potatoes, same deal, have a carb and veg side with a protein option. There's tuna, vienna sausage, chili, beans, and luncheon loaf (not sure what that is), so you can mix and match to whatever your family's tastes are. You could get a few lunches/dinners out of that assortment.
You could take the oats and some sugar and make granola, top it over the canned fruit and make a struddle of sorts.
kim cummings good idea except most of them don’t have power, so no oven to cook in.
Cruz the Brown Guy Luncheo loaf is a generic version of spam and the beef stew is premade
Looks good! But one thing, throw some chicken bullion with salt and onion or some garlic cloves would add some better flavor to that white rice.
Bravo, well done! The frozen veggie trinity was an excellent idea.
That take on red beans and rice looked so delicious! I think you will love those can holders from Dollar Tree. They are my favorite storage product there and I use them to organize my food cans, seasoning packets, protein bars, and anything small that I would like to stay together. Much love to you and your family ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have everything but the seasoning. Going to try this. I had ran out of meal ideas with the food I had left.
"...The lady in red, is cookin' for me, cheap cheap, there's no one else here, it's just you and meat, it's where I want to be, But I hardly know, this vegetable on the side, I'll never forget the whey you cooked tonight..."
Hahahaha,love it
That is amazing!! oh my gosh that made me smile!! Christine will love it!
Oh golly, one of my favorite songs, TOTally redone for dinner - terrific job!!! Chrispy de Burgher would be proud.
😆💚💜 that was friggin awesome!
I will never hear that song the same way again. 😜
To thicken your beans, you could have taken one to two cups of the beans and liquor/broth out and puree it and then pour that back into the pot of beans. That acts as a natural thickening without changing the flavor of the beans.
Love your ideas!
😊
I love this challenge! I go to the Dollar Tree for their organization items, but always pass on buying groceries there. We have several Adli that I can go to, so I never thought of the Dollar Tree as a place for food. I am going to have to look at their food selection more closely!
Ms. Christine,
Do a pass on the Coconut oil. It is refined. Once you refine coconut oil, you destroy what was good in this product. If you are going to buy and use Coconut oil always, always unrefined.
This recipe was genius!! Thanks for sharing!!
Cannot wait too try this and so many more of your recipes from dollar tree items
Are Raisonettes chocolate raisins? If so then yes !!!!! Xx
There's no Uncle in Tony Chachere"s! 😂🤣
LOL. True... but when you live with him in your cabinet for so many years you just call him Uncle Tony!!
I’m totally calling it Uncle Tony’s now ;)
Right?! Lol!
Oh they know. Lol. We just call it Tony’s
Thank you😂 the Louisiana me was screaming
I love raisins, raisin nets are good, but my favorite way to eat raisins is in trail mix
love dollar tree. I shop there at least once a month, and I find so many items that have stocked my pantry, freezer, that I can create meals with, have used their items when I was living out of my SUV, for easy, quick meals on the run. You are so, so in touch with how real people are living today, have to live. So many of these vloggers are such fakes, you my dear, are showing how many of us are really dealing with high food prices. Keep up the great work.
You should try home-made gnocchi, with a decent recipe they're so much better than store-bought because they aren't as dense/dry and in a sauce they're even better.
Yes to Raisinets, but only if someone has them, wouldn’t by for myself most likely ;)
Also can I just say that you’re the coolest, Christine?? The dance at the end 👌🏼
You go girl, love dollar tree
You did wonderful job
Yes, I love raisinets. I was at dollar tree last night after church and was looking at the Creole seasoning and passed. Now I wish I would have picked it up. Thanks for your videos.
For the best red beans and rice, try Camellia brand red beans. You can usually find them at Wal-Mart.
Christine, you totally swiped my red beans and rice recipe! To thicken the red beans and rice just take a utensil of your choice and smash a few of the beans and simmer for a bit.
Hey Christine. Awesome video as always!!😊🥳🙏👏 We absolutely LOVE these!❤️ Excellent planning.
Always love theses videos.
That saffron yellow rice is actually good, had it for the first time the other day and it has lots of flavor. So i went back and got 2 more bags lol anyway nice video
You shouldn't usually put tomatoes in the refrigerator.
I also use those fridge storage containers for my cheese so I can keep it all together the small blocks fit perfectly in there and I can see everything I have and use up the oldest first without having to dig for it
After reading a comment about the long skinny dollar tree containers used for spices I remembered some items I used in my pantry for free. I used the utensil holder from my old dishwasher for spices that I keep in my pantry that I don't use daily. I have SEVERAL loaf pans for bread or meatloaf. Perfect in the fridge to keep shredded cheese packages upright. I reuse a lot of items that were made for something else. It costs nothing and instead of taking up space they are being used on a daily basis. Just an FYI. Have a wonderful week.
Have you ever used the creole seasoning on popcorn? So good!
I love brewer yeast on pop corn ,they have big flake brewers yeast.
Well now I want to try that.
"Thumbs down engagement either way " lol!
Right now I’m so envious of your weather! All weekend here it’s been 114 to 116° 😖 I’m a cold weather girl and so cal is way to hot lol This video is pretty awesome! You always inspire me. There can always be that time when a family may need to extreme budget, once we were that family and it can happen at any time.
Fantastic! I will be cooking this shortly!
I think it would be good to just dice up the peppers and onions mixture too! It would add a little more bulk to the dish!
You are inspirational !!
BTW, there is not enough chocolate on this planet to make raisins edible 😜
Thanks for sharing and caring! Stay Safe!
Love this videos! Learned a lot, looking forward for more🥰
I wonder if you could do an entire days worth of food (3 meals) breakfast lunch and dinner for under $10 from dollar tree.
I cannot hear someone say a price on any video without saying....doll hairs. Anyone else??
Yep. And I have started saying it myself.
If you watch the videos on mute with English auto-generated subtitles, dollars is frequently transcribed as doll hairs.
Is it her accent or is it intentional? I was trying to figure that out too lol
My husband has always said doll hairs 😂
Raisinets are my favorite of all time. My grandma used to give them to me when I was a kid before there was the brand “Raisinets” so they always remind me of her!
I just love your personality!
Team Raisinet here. In fact, there's a Polish candy that is a dark chocolate covered prune. Yes, I said prune. Before you yuck, let me tell you that it tastes like a GIANT raisinet.
I think whole tomatoes last longer sitting on your counter instead of in the fridge. maybe it's just me
And they should be set upside-down, on their "shoulders."
I never put potatoes garlic or onions in the fridge. Dry produce never goes in the fridge. Unless you already cut it.
Yes, I keep the Nile Tony’s on hand. It is exactly the same. I use it in a lot of my recipes and on all kinds of meat and soups.
I love the veggies and peppers and buy them for stocking my freezer for meals. I make my menu plan and go get the stuff I need.
