No, they were not "out of [their] fucking minds!" They couldn't afford a bigger orchestra for this film. At least they tried to follow the musical identity that John Williams established.

Ken Thorne did a great job taking John Williams's original theme and expanding on it, including some new music cues that were taken to Superman 3.
It definitely sounds better here than it did in the finished film. I’m guessing that was due to a poor final mix. It was not the fault of Ken Thorne.
