My best guess on why they're saying that thing isn't an alternate is because it absolutely fucking is an alternate, and they don't want to deal with it.

I have mixed feeling on this series, because half of it falls so hard into analogue horror tropes that haven't worked since their debut in Local 58, and many of the alternate designs (or at least the way they're presented) are actually kind of laughable. But during the other half where it embraces fear of the unknown and implications (like with the 911 training video and the censored photos in Intruder Alert), boy does it fucking get to me. I also think the medium of analogue horror makes it difficult to flesh out and explore some of the more interesting concepts that come out of living in a universe where you constantly have to be aware of Alternates. But at the same time the medium does still have its advantages in terms of horror, and maybe the limits on the worldbuilding are the best thing that could happen for this story. I'll always support a medium that has such a cheap barrier of entry. Local 58 and Thalasin are still the pinnacles of analogue horror in my opinion, but this is still something great, and I'm excited to see what's next. P.S. I have no idea where you came up with the idea that this series is set in the 60's, it's not.
