Thanks so much for this Cool lesson! After understanding it, in terms of musical written notes & the ‘count’… ~ I reckon it would be: 1& 2& 3& 4& … ~ then, second measure: 1_&a 2& 3& 4& …Repeat (of course proper touches & tones must be applied 😅 … That first beat of second measure/the roll is in 16th notes if musically notated, 1e&a, with the e eliminated/that is being silent or another way of saying it is: there is a ‘rest’ on the e of 1 e & a…. So it is 1_&a …. 😅🎶
As an English speaker, honestly the Spanish episodes are dope! RUclips's closed captions (sorta) translates, and hearing you speak over it has been helping me work on expanding my limited high-school Spanish skills. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge Eric, these videos have helped me a ton!
Yo that was smooth. Here's another variation to add to my tool chest. You and cats like Bongorilla have taught me alot. Thanks for the tutorial. They mean alot to budding bongoceros like myself.
que agradables entregas nos das Eric y eso de maña..maña..maña !! jiji es así mi hermano pero al fin tenemos la oportunidad de ver la verdad, gracias mi hermano!!!!!
I found it too.complicated until I begin counting (the numbers below represent the bar timing) : 1Rm &L 2R &Lt 3Rm &L 4R(hembra) (Lt, 1Lo) &RL2R &Lt 3Rm &L 4R(hembra) &Lt Rm Right mute Lt Left tumb (Ghost notes) Saludos compas
Do you have any suggestion on how to do a short roll on 1 in Martillo, used in Dominican bachata? One problem could be the fact that if you use two of the same fingers of both hands to do a roll, the thumb cannot be prepared in time to provide the tension increase in the center of the macho for the high note.
Salud
HI Eric! Love your videos man. I just started playing el bongo a few months ago. I have watched your videos and learned a bunch, but I feel like I am all over the place. Do you have any structured courses for beginners? Or do you have any recommendations for beginner bongo courses?
I appreciate how you broke this down and went slow. For a beginner do you recommend practicing the Martillo until you're able to build up speed before learning variations, or is it okay to learn some variations while still practicing the basic rhythm?
Thank you so much! I would say... try to get as comfortable with a basic martillo as possible... to the point it comes so natural that the hits are as clean as you think possible... theeeeen when you start to get into other variations... those hits are already going to be developed that it comes a bit easier.
How do you tune your bongos, mine doesnt sound like that, obviously my bongos are cheap headliner with evans heads, any recommendation for tunning? Saludos desde Mérida Yucatán México
mario gomez headlines are limited to the sound they can play. Get yourself some LA Matadors and you’ll experience the difference. Erick’s bongos heads are Manitos skins, which are top of the line. I usually tune the macho at G or F# and Hembra at C. For most Latin music of course.
This was great and you're such a warm presenter/teacher. I appreciate you!
This is another good pattern for my bongo!

Eric; what’s the thickness of the macho and hembra manito’s head? Horse and Steer I assume.
