RIP - Rest In Power: the great Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez has left this plane, 1945-2024, but thankfully left us with a LOT of great music and masterful bongo magic.
For those watching this amazing tutorial, You can slow down the playback speed to 2 times slower. You find those settings on the gear symbol right next to the close caption CC icon. That way you can see his hands movements in slow motion. It helped me a lot.
That's crazy! My father played with him when they both played with Tito Puente... My dad's name is Victor Cruz who also played with Ceila Cruz right up to when she passed away. He also was part of the All Stars.
Eric...., man, muchas gracias for what U R doing! Im 50 y.o....in love with the music...not a professional percussionist, but...., man, when I was desperado because didn't have the right guys to play with and left my stuff at the corner....I've just start watching to your chanel and....U just lift me up....!!!! BLESSINGS, TAKE CARE AND KEEP ON ROCKIN'
Don't forget the origin of all these rhytms is Cuba!!
I play bass. Lately I have accuired some little purcussion instruments including a bongo, wooden tapping sticks to record some tracks of mine. Your tuts help a lot! Thanks for taking time to make them! Greetings from Sri Lanka!
Dude you're the best. I love your passion and your way of teaching that slows it down. I started playing this week and your videos are by far the best. I even watch the ones in Spanish, it's like learning Spanish and Bongo at the same time! Love your stuff man, easy subscribe and gonna go through your channel and check your videos out!
Dandy and I both live in Las Vegas. We have played many gigs together. Kind of a dream with Dandy on bongos next to me. Never intimidated me. Instead, he made me play better. I have had a strange life, brother, but musically you can’t find a better band mate.
I have the two of them BONGOS and CONGAS. I'm getting back to my roots and enjoying percussion as much as possible. Love your viedeos Eric and love this spectacular Dandy tumbao. You do it awsome man
LOL Eric, All the congueros and bongoceros who watch you are going to be able to identify each other when we hear the rhythms in public! We’re going to say; “You learned that from Bro Eric! Gloria a Dios!
Soooooo. To also add.....I have played with George Delgado who plays with Dandy alot. He describes as u do alllll those little things and hits that Dandy plays. The accent he hits...OMG...Makes u look back and say what was THAT....THAT POP...
Eric thank for your lesson I play with a group called the New Generation played 2nd trumpet. Back then in the 70's..recorded with Rico Records back then. Now I play the Congas.Thank you for your instructions and information and the drumming a live.
I was also completely blown away by his sound when I saw that solo with the orquestra! It was the first time I saw the congahead channel and I was 100 % sold!! keep up the videos I love this shit
Fantástica contribución Eric. Muy agradecido por dedicar tu tiempo a descifrar con tanto detalle las técnicas del maestro JOHN DANDY RODRÍGUEZ. Te agradecería un mundo si pusieras una versión de este tutorial en español
Very interesting alternative take on the martillo, I really didn’t know there were variations on it. Luckily I got to see Dandy in the 80s at SOBs here in NYC when I was in my early 20s, with Charlie Palmieri. I was floored, I simply couldn’t believe the pop and tones he pulled out of the bongo. Arguably the greatest ever on the instrument, maybe?
i share your love for the music and appreciate the inset where the bongos appear oriented the same way i see mine. i would love it even more if you included some notation. for me, a short pencil is better than a long memory.
Hola Eric, Can you please show the link referenced showing Dandy Rodriguez playing this martillo. There is only a brief clip. Is the entire video available? Thanks!
That “martillo” is just the golpe. The golpe is based on the one you do in Guaguanco in Cuban Rumba on requinto. It’s the most important part of Bongo and requinto playing. The riff always ends on the 3-side of the clave. This lick is what makes Afro-Cuban music go
Hey Erik doing a great job on demonstrations. I Luv how you break down the pattern...yeah! El Dandy my favorite. An other favor of mine if you ever get a chance. To me one the old school great Bongosero of his time. Manny Oquendo.. Thanks 👍🏼
HEY I was wondering if you can make a 8.5 bongo sound like a 11 inch conga. maybe make a video comparing conga and bongo and tuning them the same if its possible
@@APercussionLife that's the problem with this particular video; I cannot figure out where is the one , of how to play it with the clave. I love all your other vids, but this one is hard to get without that reference. Saludos
Se pone clave de 2/3 a este patron de martillo? Suena muy bonito sin poner la clave.. It looks like a two bar pattern. Por lo menos asi entiendo el conteo. Gracias.
Hi Eric, thanks for your videos again. I have a question. I see people, included myself beating the drums with just one or two fingers and others with the whole hand. It works for me better playing with just one or two finger, otherwise it sounds muffed to me. What do you think personally? or anybody else any ideas?
It all goes down to technique... I've seen the same and a lot of people are able to get such a projection from a couple or fingers... but what I've learned is that as long as you're main principle are fingers (to an extent) and you're avoiding injury and you're getting proper projection then you're on the right path... If you notice Anthony Carillo's positioning vs Dandy's... completely different.. but both highly respectable.
Holà Eric, thank you for this class which allow me to improve my inventory. Could you please add the clave on this rythm, so that we can start on the rignt pulse. Ta ta - ta to to - ti ta to ta to - - - thanks ;-)

I could hear the clave rhythm in the martillo pattern after listening to it on repeat. Nice video, it's good to play again after getting back into it.
I play bass. Lately I have accuired some little purcussion instruments including a bongo, wooden tapping sticks to record some tracks of mine. Your tuts help a lot! Thanks for taking time to make them! Greetings from Sri Lanka!

That’s probably the first riff I learned. It drilled in me a deep feel and understanding of the clave.
YES!
The one and only! Grande John Dandy Rodriguez! Grande Eric!
Johnny Dandy Rodriguez has a throw back style of playing. His playing is so smooth , yet so strong, and his timing is 2nd to none.

Eric, looking for a good bongo stand. Any recommendations?
Meinl bongo stand ia great, when you pair it with with cotton of a snare stand, you can play seated without staining your legs.

Eric is a real gentleman and savvy when it comes to percussion. I'm using his ideas in my Latin Ensemble at a local community college.

that thick cuero hembra .. so sweet
I've been trying to play this to music, but I can't seem to sync up with it. Do you start with the first hit you showed? Or does it depend?
