    Another transit organization that used these Gillig Phantom buses was Capital Metro in Austin Texas from 1985 to 1995. What an old time nostalgia, along with the old time Armadillo Buses that went to UT Austin, Downtown Austin, and Zilker Park.

    I grew up taking VTA to school in Palo Alto and they normally used Phantoms or Gillig Low Floors for the school trip routes. I always preferred the phantoms! They rode a lot smoother than the low floors. Sometimes if we were lucky they'd send one of their fancy newer Gillig Express Hybrids with WiFi onboard, or a 60' New Flyer. Since Gillig is from the Bay Area they're quite a common sight around here, though the SFMTA (San Francisco) seems to favor New Flyer.

    As I understand it the original Gilliig plant is in Russell City (now part of Hayward) CA.
    Apparently it has relocated at some point to Livermore, CA.

    Rock Region Metro (before then Central Arkansas Transit) used to have a Gillig phantom. Now they have the newer Gillig's that uses natural fuel.

    sounds like a Voith gearbox is it?

    • @adventureoflinkmk2
      @adventureoflinkmk2 3 года назад

      Most likely. Dunno WTF was up with Gillig and their love for Voith transmissions

      Yea, I can tell just by sound it’s a Voith. Our old Low Floor Gilligs have them. They’re good transmissions, very smooth, but they’re complicated and there’s not a lot of shops (in my area at least) who know how or are willing to work on them.

    Wonderful ol Gillig.! My local transit company had these for a while, replaced with New Flyer XDE35s and XDE40s unfortunately, our Gilligs have been retired for about four years now, sitting to rot.

    I’ve always wanted to convert a bus like that into a motor home of sorts. But I wonder how it would do on the highway?
