Here in chhattisgarh we call it Pootroos.
In our area, species with pink, orange and small amounts of white flowers are found.
Due to the branches of its bush being fine thorny and rough, there is a slight very temporary scratch, but it doesn't cause any disease. We have eaten a lot of its ripe small black and sweet fruits in our childhood. Till date, I have not heard any complaint about it, neither from my own age nor from any elder.

Lantana variety of India and South East Asia is common and local plant here. You can find the mention of Lantana shrubs in the books of Jim Corbett, col. Keshri singh. S huge etc famous hunters. In india Lantana is in books and mentions from 18th century. It's not a poison plant but a local plant of our south east Asia region. Apart from India its available in Nepal, Bhutan, sti lanka and Myanmar as I saw it there.

Lantana is very robust. Its stem transplntation has almost 100% success rate. Even when the plant is cut till its root, new leaves and branches come out very quickly. No doubt it has become an invasive alien species. People are adapting to its presence and started taking benefits from it. People use it as cheap farm hedges to protect their crops or saplings from cattles. Since they grow very fast, they are cut and dried branches are used as cheap source of firewood.

yea exactly. Its biomass accumulator once enough bio mass is produced the trees take over. Its the sequential. If the man has made the ground bare and patchy dirt with no vegetation this hardy plant will take over. The man call this plant cancer along with Prosopis juliflora trees from mexico that were introduced in India and other species that are spiny but really hardy that are pioneer to create the forest. However I'd put my bet on nature than human though.

Leaf extract of Lantana (and another exotic weed Parthenium) have several secondary metabolites, toxic to the growth of water hyacinth (terror of Bengal). Extraction unit could be set up in affected areas to bottle their extract and could be exported to water hyacinth affected tarai areas. Locals will get the job for weed (Lantana) collection to unit. It will solve the double problem.
