    There's absolutely nothing wrong with you! When I'm doing heavy diss work (close readings of theory, writing, etc.) I max out at 2h maybe 3h on a good day. There's actually a study (which I found in the book "Rest") that shows that intellectual workers are at their most productive when they work for 10-20 hours a week and they found that those who worked for 35 hours a week were less productive! I think it really puts things into perspective. Doing more hours doesn't equal doing a good job.

    Your vlogs have been so incredibly helpful for me! I don’t exaggerate when I say they’ve guided me through this whole summer. I’ll be applying for PhD programs in Africana Studies/cultural media studies in this upcoming fall application cycle and your vlogs have gotten me up and out of bed when nothing else can. If you ever need interviews for the direct effects of your vlogs on the embodiment of young women audience members let me know lol. Also, don’t know if you linked this in the last video, but where did you get your new keyboard from? ❤️

    i appreciated the part where you were talking about dissertation work // corporate jobs and how much of the "9-5" is actually spent doing deep work. i've had to switch how i think about my dissertation because i used to think i needed to spend the majority of my time and energy on it. it was the messaging i received from my chair and committee + pretty much anyone i talked to. but realistically (esp. with work responsibilities and other life stuff), i find that 2-3 hours (usually 2) is all i can really do every day. i'm trying to be okay with that and focusing on consistently getting those hours in 5 days a week and not stressing about it otherwise.
    wishing you the best as you work through all your edits! 🙂

    Just wanted to share that you can tooooootally finish your diss working in these chunks of time. I just submitted my diss working in similar chunks-sure there are those marathon 4-5 hr days here and there, but i bet i averaged 1-3 hours a day, with lots of days on that lower end. I rly hate how much the diss process brings up so much self doubt and feeling of not-good-enough and not-doing-enough. It’s so unfair and just not based in the reality of the very heavy load that is writing a diss. Anyway, just cheering you on and here to remind you to fight all those negative thoughts-you’re doing enough and you’re going to do it. you’re already doing it ❤

    I teach community college and I've noticed a big difference in how long I can work when I am creating something (lesson planning, writing exams/quizzes, making worksheets,etc) versus doing admin tasks (emails). Writing/creating takes ALOT of brain power!

    • @SarahFischerVlogs

      Yes! Absolutely! I think it feels extra difficult this summer because diss writing is all I have going on for the most part (not teaching, not working at the writing center, etc.)

    Hey Sarah!! Fellow Rhet/comp PhD student and writing center admin :) I have been just binge-watching your RUclips channel and looove it so much! Keep posting your awesome blogs!
    I notice that you are an avid reader also for fun. I have been traumatized with just reading theory and now I'm back at reading "for fun." I would love your recommendations for a last summer read before my vacation is over ! (Looking for your favorite light, romance-fantasy-sci-fi, page turner book).

    You're doing great! I (reluctantly) work in corporate, and I'm productive maybe 3 hours max on a good day, the rest is time filling and moving my mouse every few minutes. Still get all my work done though, so 🤷‍♀. I'd definitely be researching than filling my clocking hours with bs

    I absolutely cannot get work done at home, let alone in my bedroom. It may be worth a shot to have a full day of work away from home, like a true 9-5 just to see how it feels. Also maybe jotting down ideas and connections on a large whiteboard at a library may help. For me, seeing things large and relatively far away from my body can help when I’m stuck.

    Do you keep your sweet potatoes in the fridge? This has happened to me when I keep them cold. I am not sure if that is the true reason or if it is just coincidence. But maybe keep them in a basket in the cupboard? Its helped me.

    Do you write an outline before writing a paper or a chapter? If you do, wondering if you can also document the process in your vlog… ✍🏻

      @@FinjanKahwa23 Actually, she does it a bit. Been watching her vlogs since the pandemic and I saw her develop her ideas (even her meltdowns). Even saw her reference the work of a friend in one of her vids.
      At any rate, Sarah: Hi! Just thought I'd ask since your videos on writing and revising help me get ready for my own thesis writing. Like, if I watch someone on youtube do it, I feel like I can do it, too. If that makes sense 😃

    • @SarahFischerVlogs
      @SarahFischerVlogs  3 месяца назад

      hi! I always *try* to write an outline. It very often ends up changing while I write (because writing is thinking), but just the act of creating an outline is helpful for me. This video ruclips.net/video/mJvoIZovNk0/видео.htmlsi=w6Lce1yudMXR784U talks a bit about the outlining process!

      @@asianistlife You're totally right--I share lots of details about my work as I'm thinking through it in real time. This is helpful for my writing because I can go back and watch the vlogs and read people's comments about my ideas. Also simply verbalizing my ideas is helpful, even if they weren't publicly disseminated via RUclips. And thinking through that work often involves thinking with people (friends, scholars, etc.) and ofc, having some meltdowns along the way :')

    hearing you discuss embodiment is so curious to me because the screen removes you from the palpable body ... so you have to take on discussions of your own experience of embodiment while a literal thing separates you from the other (similar but also dissimilar) object of embodiment that you are taking on...I'm wondering how the ontological (as a theoretical) aligns with or interrupts your conceptualizations of embodiment. is the ontological a bridge between the two bodies (a theory bridge between the screen)? your research makes me think so much....i think that's what all the best kind of research does. i am sending you all the very best for your diss!!

    • @SarahFischerVlogs
      @SarahFischerVlogs  3 месяца назад +1

      I love this comment, and I have so many thoughts! When I first started vlogging, and writing about vlogging + embodiment, I couldn't describe it any other way than a paradoxical relationship. I felt simultaneously disembodied (we are mediated via a screen and further by editorial and filmic choices), but I also felt *hyper*embodied (I was acutely aware of my body as I saw it reflected back to me in real time while vlogging and seeing myself in the viewfinder, and then again, while watching myself while editing). This paradox drove me nuts. And, many days, it still does! But, like you intimated, I think research that causes some degree of frustration is some of the most worthwhile and interesting! As for theories of ontology/the ontological, I don't really ground my work in that because that would take me in more of a philosophical direct, rather than a writing studies direction. Ultimately, all of my thinking comes back to the teaching of writing--how can we use these ideas about embodiment, hyperawareness, and vlogging as a form of multimodal composition to enhance the ways we teach writing at the college level? Specifically, I try to point out the ways that thinking about embodiment in these paradoxical ways is productive for stirring up students' awareness of others' (diverse) bodies and writing/composing with equality, inclusivity, and accessibility in mind.
      Thank you so much for this comment. I love that you find these ideas interesting enough to engage so thoughtfully :')

      @@SarahFischerVlogs thank you so much for this beautifully thoughtful reply!!!!
      i find your work so so fascinating as someone who researches 19th century embodiment and how it implicates in modernity. i think that your applications of embodiment to writing and teaching are gonna have SUCH a profound impact for the future of academe as folks try to engage with discussions of diverse bodies and subjects with care and compassion. the way you understand hyper awareness thinks about the latent hyperawareness i have around what i’m saying when i’m engaging the classroom and bringing those thoughts to the foreground is so so valuable.
      all that to say, i hope you know how much an impact you’re making on me and so many!!! i’m sending you such well wishes for your final year & the job market ❤️

      @@bpal5644 hahaha watching full-time content creators as part of my dissertation is definitely uncomfortable at times, especially since many of them come from privileged backgrounds. But! It's all part of my methodology and research ethics to study folks from multiple diverse backgrounds. I do really enjoy seeing the ways they acknowledge (or don't acknowledge) this background. I find that many of Brooke's vlogs, especially her Boston/working vlogs, featured a lot of segments with phrases like "I'm so lucky to be doing this" and that is fascinating to me.
