    IMHO a truly amazing guitarist. What's with the up and down thumb movement. I've got carpal tunnel just listening. Just funky soulful and harmonically interesting throughout.

      I was wondering the same thing. Playing bass string with up and down strokes of bare thumb nail. Never saw anyone do this.

    Love Mr Taylor's playing, but why, oh why do cameramen focus on the right hand? Surely to God the more visually appealing stuff is occurring on the fretboard.

    • @axeman2638

      but it's the right hand that makes it all happen.

    and there are the players that tell you that you should not rest your pinky on the guitar...lol!!!

    • @frankharrisiii5971
      @frankharrisiii5971 6 лет назад +2

      If you can create beautiful music as such you may rest your pinky anywhere you please

    • @guitarworks2546
      @guitarworks2546 5 лет назад

      the first thing you have to accept as a musician is that there are NO rules...and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about! otherwise why would you create 7+ string guitars, 5+ string basses, sitars....or ANY instrument for that matter...someone has to give you one so you can sit with it and figure out what works for you.....if there were rules there would not have been players like Hendrix, the late great Jeff Healey, Django Reinhardt or any number of other players that didn't know or care where they were supposed to put their pinkys.

    • @rossjoseph3844

      Yes, people who will never in a million years be able to play at this level. No one tells this guy how to play.

    • @RicksTastyLicks

      Would you have preferred that a guitarist you love had directed your favorite movie?

    • @MacMic333
      @MacMic333 6 лет назад +1

      How many /left hand/right hand zooms etc that don’t show exactly how his hands work in perfect harmony.Producers and editors need to think carefully about this cam switching away at crucial moments where we learn nothing because the shots are bouncing between five cams.

    • @hamiltonmays4256
      @hamiltonmays4256 5 лет назад +1

      @@RicksTastyLicks How are movies relevant, and what sort of (false) equivalence are you insinuating? Did it not occur to you that Stephen451 just might be a guitar player trying to figure out how Martin Taylor does what few others can? It may very well be that this music video (not movie) was shot with casual viewers/listeners in mind, but that possibility notwithstanding, it does seem a shame to me that diligent and attentive musicians have relatively little access in this cut-up video to important visual clues about how to execute precisely, expressively, and fluidly on this proficiency level. I think your comment was unhelpful, snarky, and perhaps not as clever or insightful as you may have thought. MacMic333 obviously understood the original comment; I'm not convinced you did, even though I see that your profile pic shows someone, presumably you, holding a...wait for it...guitar.

    Like so many great players/singers- it's about their virtuosity, not the song. There is no mood here, only a bunch of notes.

  • @Giaco54

    he's always great but this song - for me - needs to go back to ballad / see Pat Metheny / Jools Holland version....

    Great guitarist, but no heart in this version. Too fast, great technique, but this is not music, it's just showing off

    • @dans150

      Agree, no heart in this rendition. But he does have a lot to show.

  • @jdavis6650

    Wrong tempo. Then the re-harm buries the melody. And please stay away from bends. You're better than that.

  • @dumena
    @dumena 6 лет назад +1

    Awful interpretation. He's neither neat in tempo nor in tone. A mess. Taylor has long earned his reputation for being fast, why showing off at the expense of butchering this lovely song? Don't know why" indeed.

    • @rktrkt-tw8nd
      @rktrkt-tw8nd 5 лет назад +1

      Where he lost tempo , can you please tell ? This kind of music takes at least 4 to 5 times listening to appreciate specially if you are not habitual of such mastery.

    • @NickC769
      @NickC769 3 года назад

      I saw him live and trust me, if you have no idea of what you 're taking about

    • @dumena
      @dumena 3 года назад +1

      @@NickC769 How does your experience of seeing MT live possibly affect the quality of this here rendition or my knowledge or feeling about the work of jazz guitarists? MT is a very successful, great and especially fast finger style jazz guitarist with a long career, no doubt about it. And that's why I don't understand what he did there. His performance does not work technically, many many unclean notes, tempo not even, rhythm off etc etc. And on top of everything else: why speed up this particularly dreamy ballad like that? Pat Metheny did an interesting acoustic version (in some show with Jools Holland), made the song very much his own yet did it justice and he absolutely mastered the form he had chosen. In my humble opinion.
