Maybe Gukesh will motivate Magnus to come back and play for world #1. Magnus really has no serious competition right now, so Gukesh may be the fuel for the fire.

The meaning of some words changes over time due to widespread misuse, and the incorrect usage eventually becomes accepted as the standard. This shift often erases the original meaning, leading to confusion about how these words should be used.
Take, for example, the word *undisputed*. In theory, it should mean "not questioned, challenged, or debated." An *undisputed champion*, then, would be a champion whose status remains unchallenged because no one contests their superiority. However, in contexts like boxing, *undisputed champion* refers to someone who holds all the titles from the major sanctioning bodies. This usage is technical and valid within the sport, but it diverges from the word's broader meaning. In chess, referring to a world chess champion as *undisputed* is even more problematic, as becoming the champion requires winning a dispute ‒ a highly contested world chess match. In this case, the term is misapplied, as the title is achieved through precisely the kind of contest the word *undisputed* implies does not exist.
Another example of semantic drift is the word *acute*. It originally meant "sharp" or "keen," both in a literal and metaphorical sense (e.g., acute intellect or acute pain). Over time, its shortened form, *cute*, took on a new meaning entirely, referring to something charming or physically attractive. While *cute* has lost any connection to sharpness or cleverness, its evolution from *acute* is still traceable.
Similarly, the word *irony* has undergone significant changes. Derived from the Greek *eironeia*, meaning "feigned ignorance," it originally described a rhetorical method used by philosophers, such as Socrates, who pretended ignorance to draw out the truth. Over time, *irony* came to signify intentional misrepresentation, such as pretending to be less intelligent than one is. Today, it is primarily used to describe situations where the outcome is contrary to expectations or to refer to statements that convey a meaning opposite to their literal words.
Another word that has shifted meaning is *sophisticated*. Historically, it meant "adulterated" or "made unnecessarily complex to deceive." Now, it is often used to describe someone or something that is refined, cultured, or technologically advanced ‒ a far cry from its original negative connotation.
These examples highlight how the misuse of words can lead to their meanings evolving into something entirely different. While language naturally changes, some shifts can obscure clarity and distort the original intent of words.
