Thanks for doing a review of this. I just picked up the 4K a month ago…..great movie. Love the 1970s New York movies. KL did a nice job with Marathon Man and Death Wish as well.
Nice review! However I was taken aback when you said "it's very seventies but really good" - what with "Godfather Part 2," "Chinatown," "Cabaret," "The Long Goodbye," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," "The Conversation," "Annie Hall," "The Bad News Bears," "Jaws," "Mean Streets" and dozens of other classics, the 70s is arguably the greatest decade in the history of American movies.
I love this film and have purchased every release since DVD and I agree this is a wonderful release, looks about as good as you'll get for a film like this and the 2.0 audio track is great.
Nothing like NYC cop in the seventies. This movie is awesome.
As far as I'm aware, neither of the previous releases had a 5.1 track; only the 4K and the remastered KL 1080p discs. And as someone who strongly dislikes non-surround tracks for films, I would buy it just for that (any 5.1 mix - even with no actual surround activity - will always handily beat an up-mixed stereo track for me across the front 3). Glad to see KL providing 5.1 tracks for some of these films since audio upgrades nowadays seem to be quite a bit less common than during the transition to Blu-ray.

Fantastic review of an amazing film. Sad to hear about your granddad but how cool that he looked like Walter Matthau.
If you like this, may I suggest The Laughing Policeman, another 70s crime thriller starring Walter Matthau, this time a San Francisco police detective trying to figure out who a gunman is before he kills more people.

Saw it for the first time at my Aunt's house on a cold New England December evening in 1987. The film has that French connection vibe. Sorry for your loss.

If you like Walter Matthau definitely check out Charley Varrick, it's basically the prototype for No Country for Old Men
Gotta include "A New Leaf" w/Elaine May and Walter for some dark, ascerbic black humor.

The original Pelham's definitely better than the remake, that's for sure. Although I love Denzel, I chose to give my son that version, retaining the original blu ray for my own collection. Now I need the 4K. Thanks for covering this one, Jeff. In other news, there seems to have been a lot of news stories so far this year, calling into question the ongoing sustainability of streaming as a business model, given the escalating cost of content and limited returns under cheap all-you-can-watch subscription plans. Long live physical media 😊
So I guess your saying I should finally update my VHS?
Worth noting but not mentioned in the review: one of the two commentaries is new and exclusive to this release. It was not on the “42nd Anniversary” Kino Blu-ray release discussed in the video.

Great movie
Re HDR grading-I have the Sony Original UBP-X800; it just has HDR, the color is great, but the main flaw is the picture is too dark a lot of the time, and requires adjustment per movie. Yet I am not going to spend $300+ for a new player just for HDR 10/Dolby Vision. So I adjust....
Hey Jeff, i have a question for you. I purchased the box set of Resident Evil movies. All the bluray discs work but every 4k disc will not play. I tried on 2 4k bluray players and still doesn’t work. Do you know who i can contact to possibly getting these discs replaced? Any help would be appreciated thx.

Do you like the new version with Denzel Washington and John Travolta? Honestly I never saw the original but the cast is awesome. I guess you would say this version is the better one?
By far! Travolta comes across way too comical in the remake.

If you don't like HDR couldn't you just turn on HLG and you would still have the 4K resolution.
4k & bluray look the same!
