- An action/shooting/driving game where you play a role of a driver of a G-6155 CIA Prototype Interceptor sports car. The object of the game is to travel the freeways and waterways, hunting down and destroying as many enemy vehicles as possible, all the while not harming civilian vehicles. Points are scored for driving on the road and for destroying enemy vehicles. There is a lead-in time when the player has an endless supply of cars. After this time expires, the player will lose a life each time the car crashes. Extra cars can be earned with high scores. The first extra car is earned at a default value of 30,000 points, but this value can vary depending on settings.
The player must be careful to avoid harming civilian vehicles on the road. There are three types: blue automobiles, pink automobiles, and motorcycles. Hurting these vehicles causes scoring to stop briefly, during which time the player's score reads 'NO POINTS'.
There are six enemies in all, each with their own special characteristic :
Switchblade' or 'Never To Be Trusted' cars have tire slashers. Knives pop out of this car's tires and can force the player's car to crash if they touch his tires.
The Road Lord' or 'Bulletproof Bully' cars have bulletproof armor plating; machine guns are ineffective against these cars.
The Enforcer' or 'Double Barrel Action' is a limousine with a shotgun toting thug who shoots at the player's car.The Mad Bomber' or 'Master Of The Sky' is a helicopter which drops bombs. This enemy can only be destroyed with missiles.
'Barrel Dumper' is a boat which drops lethal explosives into the water.
'Doctor Torpedo' is a boat which shoots torpedoes at the player's ship.
Note: Used the Don't ram other vehicles cheat so I do not hit the good drivers. Also used infinite smokescreen, oil, and missile as well. The game is endless.
Lil secret (bug?) I discovered as a kid is that if you make your way to the far right of the screen, you can travel at full speed safely, as you never hit any objects. You'll continue to gain score indefinitely, though since you're not on the road, you'll never pass into any new zones. In other words, you forever stay in the forest, and you can gain unlimited lives over time. Once you're finished farming lives, you can move back onto the road to progress through the game as normal.
cool!
Works in C64 version as well😅
Thats not a bug that how it was on the original arcade game
Not unlimited lives. You only receive extra lives at 30k, 60k, 90k and 120k points. That's it. (At least in the original gaming hall version and in the MSME PC version)
In 1985, I got addicted to this game as an 18 year old Navy sailor. The laundromat on base was my hangout on payday (too young to get into bars) and I'd spend hours pumping quarters into that machine while I did my laundry! I couldn't get that song out of head. Great memories.
Best game ever
Brings back happy memories of playing this back in the 80s. One thing missing is that the Peter Gunn music was awesome on the cabinets as the bass was cranked right up.
The Peter Gunn music was awesome. It's better than the original.
My fave game, and I guess half of the reason was the music.
An absolute classic. Music was incredible, 007 at the Pizza Hut.
I wanted to keep getting further in it just to hear more of the music.
I never played the game with the James Bond theme. Another song that would fit the game is the Mission Impossible theme.
The music was from the late 1950's show Peter Gunn
@@timharris6595 Henry Mancini, like The Pink Panther?
@@kevinpayton2664 it never had the 007 theme. They could not get the license so they used the Peter Gunn theme.
One of the first arcade games I ever saw. It seemed so magical! Folks had never seen a machine like this before!
This game was sooo fun. My dad let me play the PC version when I was 4 in ‘96. Good times
It was fun. My dad let me play the arcade version of this at the actual video game arcade in 1983. You would sit down in a booth that resembled a car, you had a gas pedal to make it go, a real clutch for low and high gear, and buttons that resembled Knight Rider for launching the missiles and smoke screen. The steering wheel was almost identical to KITT's, and there were 2 buttons on each side of the arched steering wheel that you pressed to fire the machine guns. It was extremely cool!
"PC version." Pffft.
@@robadams5799What's wrong with that?
This was the first video game I ever played (5 or 6yo), my dad had an Atari computer if I remember correctly
I remember this from when I had the midway collection! I want it again. Decently tough game but you'd never get tired of playing it
From 1989 to 1994 my family had this cabinet in an arcade we owned in the Cleveland Greyhound. I have NEVER seen ANYONE get past 5 minutes when we had it, albeit I was still in elementary school and wasn't there 24/7 (we had a little gift shop and restaurant, too... Damn I haven't thought of that place in years)... Anyways this was a hard ass game... Whenever my uncle or Dad opened up the arcade games to collect the quarters, I'd get to free play and even having that, I was way too young to play this game lol... Could hardly see above the steering wheel controller that had the cool button placements you didn't see on any other video game at the time... We also had double dragon...I played the living hell outta that
Happy memories
👍
Been playing this for 30 years, never made it to the boat.
JustSoLeopard - used to play this 30 years ago at the arcade :) Made it to the boat a few times - don't remember what happens after that / at the end.
i admire your dedication.
Keep trying. Poor guy.
My friend played this game so much he got held back a few years in school because this is all he would do.
LOL
This is like playing $1,000 bucks in quarters to get this far
This game was insanely hard in the arcades.
I could actually play for awhile. Just lucky, I guess, to find I was good at such an awesome game.
This game was the reason I got my c64 in 84 .
Portable or desktop homie?
used to love this along with chase hq and wonderboy for the c64
As a ten year-old, I loved this game at home on my ColecoVision and could play for hours. The controls of the arcade version were way too sensitive and made it difficult to play.
Wow! I was a pre teen when this game came out. I use to spend hours on it. A quarter a game $.25. If you stay to the left and playing for a while you have a chance to turn into a small boat with many weapons.
That’s always what I tried to get to - if I did, I was happy and didn’t mind getting killed and losing my quarter. And the oil slick would change to flames on the water!
11:17 is what you're thinking of 🚤
I remember playing this game as a kid during a family trip to north India and getting the highest score on that arcade machine. It was crazy but fun and probably the first time I experienced "gamer flow" or "the zone" on that cool and dull afternoon in 2002
Loved this game! Maybe it’s because of Spy Hunter that I am now an amazing driver!
The thing that bugs me about Spy Hunter is that it shows a Learjet on the cover. Do you get to fly and shoot in this game... of course not!
This game rocks!! When you don't die often, and the awsome music kicks in!
This is just like driving in Houston! such realism! lol this game does take me waaaay back. Thanks for sharing!
i remember going into arcades and this theme constantly playing over and over again.
But that wasn't a problem, was it? I didn't think so. Siren call, it was.
My favorite game to play in the 80's had one in our neighborhood jiffy store.
I played this at summer camp for years. Miss those days, they weren't even that long ago
2:33-2:49 "Peter Gunn, Main Theme"
He's in mission from god
Composed by the late Henry Mancini, who also wrote the music for The Pink Panther, Remington Steele and the Bo Derek movie 10.
That's what Midway used when MGM/UA said no over the James Bond theme they originally wanted to use.
The most underrated arcade game of all time.
I rate it tops, anyway.😊
My dad loved to play this game so much. There was one in the Pizza place a few miles away from our house, and he would be there constantly….pumping quarter after quarter into it.. it drove him mad. One day we were driving back from there (I was only six, and couldn’t be left home alone, so he would have me sit on the floor while he played) and something snapped in him. He started slamming cars left and right….. tried to drive into the back of a Ryder truck or something.
My mom came and got us kids after he was taken away to jail. He eventually got the charges reduced and spent a few months in an institution. Or sometime like that.
Shoot! Sorry. It wasn't the game, I don't think😢
Had this on my Spectrum 128k. Spend many happy hours playing this.
I have an abbreviated version of this game via the Arcade Classic mini toy version. My favorite part is going into the water driving the motorboat.
I'm 45 and still play this on the NES. Used to love playing this in the arcade at Peter Piper Pizza in Texas back in the day. Life was great back then...eating pizza and sodas, and playing video games until tokens ran out and begged our dad to please give us more dollars for the token machine which sometimes he gave in and other times he said tough shit...lol My pop was a classic gamer and knew what we were up against. We all had fun though. Great Video! A+++
Wow. I thought Peter Piper Pizza was just Arizona.
To this day nothing beats the originals unless your me of course! The Good one.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid! A time when the world span the right way!
I first saw this game in April of 1985, at the bowling center of Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, when I was in Engineer School. I was DONE.
When I wasn't training or bowling, I was Spy Hunting, rofl.....
the vehicle sprites look quite nice for 1983
Enemy: This is the Enemies Mayhem! You're under arrest in the name of the evil world of experience!
Player: YOU NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!!! (Gun Shot at the enemy and the evil army are starting to chase after him!)
I did better in the arcade with the steering wheel then playing this with a controller. Its much harder to control. How did you get rid of the timer? that's my biggest issue
5:02 has collisions turned off, still manages to get creamed. oh well, i sucked at it too back in the 80s.
Spy Hunter was my number 1 Favorite Midway Arcade Game of All-Time I play ports was GBA and Midway Arcade Treasures on Gamecube and then I play awesome cabinet and steering wheel at Galloping Ghost Arcade
I had this game on the NES and wasn't happy with the home conversion but now that I have it on my emulator I love it!!
Used to get so aggravated playing this game at Jay’s Tobacco Road as a kid
I'm actually excellent play on this spy hunter....there 2 different machine. One for stand and other machine there seat much more comfortable and I can play over 2 hours undefeated 😀
I am one of your team over 2 hours! i remember in the arcade the girl of the coins shut down the machine to let other players play, ouch!
Yeah, sitting down and the music just made it the best game hands down. I could go for y twenty minutes or more, which was totally worth it.
Theme for Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini.
They were going to use the James Bond theme but couldn't obtain the rights.
THIS GAME IS STILL A CLASSIC :)
Always loved the music in this game at the arcade
So nostalgic...damn I wish I had my childhood back..
Great memories.. Loved this game.
I loved this game as a kid. Used to play it all the time. I was ecstatic when I picked up an NES cartridge years ago.
I loved this game back in the day....could spend like 30 minutes playing it while on my weed buzz :)
Exactly
If the truck dropping you off is always that close, why didn’t they just have the guy driving the truck drive the car? 🤷🏼♂️
I'm having flashbacks of the summer of 1984 and 1985
There's some definite Tom Fuckery going on here.
I remember a Chinese restaurant close to where I lived in Camden NJ had this back in 1985 and I'd play it whenever I went there with my dad to pick up food. I was 5 and had no clue what I was doing......
This must be emulated. The player doesn't have the real arcade controls. The game is hard without them.
I’ve played this in LEGO dimensions
I played this heaps back in the day
I played every night in a Donut chop , the game sound make little sad memories those years were in 1989 ....😥
What car game was like this but side view? I remember the second stage was on a bridge and I think first stage you had to jump over rock slides.
This is probably being played on an emulator, which might be part of the problem, because this would be terrible spy hunting on an arcade machine. Then again, the arcade machine had a proper steering wheel, an accelerator, and four conveniently-placed buttons for weapons, whereas this guy is probably using a Nintendo controller, so it's probably not entirely his fault (even though he's playing on some sort of easy setting where most vehicles are intangible).
I learned to drive playing Spy Hunter: move smoothly with traffic, steer slowly in icy weather, and you can make helicopters bomb your enemies if you drive halfway intelligently.
there were two arcade versions, the sit-down/sit-in one and the stand up one with a gas pedal.
I'm laughing. Sit down! My fave.
I’m miss the 80s so much.
The Arcade Game was a Coin Vacuum. The NES version was easier to play and had codes to make it more playable and fun. The Arcade Version of Spy Hunter is: How many seconds will it be before you die? A player using the Arcade Version could get a Game Over in under 20 seconds.
Let me get this straight, so SEGA released Spy Hunter for the Atari 2600, 5200 & the Atari 8-bit computer family as well as the Commodore 64, while Coleco released the game for the ColecoVision and Sunsoft released it for the Nintendo Entertainment System, even though the arcade game was released and published by Midway.
Hard ass game...
Wher did you get the rom and the cheats?
Casi lloro al mirar este juego desde que salía de la escuela directo al traga moneda lo amaba
Would I dare say that the person whose playing this video gsme is terrible? He's getting killed too often too easily, he did poorly surviving the bullet proof bully switchblade, the enforcer, and the mad bomber. 💣 🎮 🥌 🏑 🎲 🎴 🏀 ▶️ 🤔 😏
Can somebody please explain to me how he can come back from water to road after wrecking two boats (i.e., having lost all weapons except machine guns), being transported by an OIL truck and directly afterwards use SMOKE?
Is that a cheat mode?
I couldn't do that in the original version in the gaming hall, nor can I in my MAME PC version...
WHEN I SAY I WANT YOU SAY PIE! LOOK AT TAIL GATE JOHNNY!
TEEN TITANS GO REFERENCE!
Probably inspired Knight Rider and the rig.
My Alzheimer's afflicted grandmother could've played better.
This guy sucks.
🤣
@@Tigerman1138 i said the same shit watching this guy play lol
@@Tigerman1138 LOL
4 years later, you still made me laugh. I used to be really good at this game and this reminds me when my mom tried to play it once when she came to pick me up at the arcade.
R.I.P. to the guy that wrote the Peter Gunn theme song.
THUMBS DOWN - HOW MANY AD'S DO YOU NEED IN A VIDEO ?
I remember playing this on the gba and midway arcade treasures on the ps2 i wish i played the arcade but pretty good game
used to play this in arcades in scarborough.
I used to play the shit outta this game as kid in the arcades !!!
Seems like he's got hacks on...I clearly see him glitching through the cars. Still cool to watch though.
What happened to the background audio?
Me encantaba este juego, era un experto jugandolo.
Great memories...I remember trying to race the power up trucks 😆
Takes me back...
I played the Sega master system port of this had know idea what it was but was hooked right away
Missed the damn boat house!!
My high score for this game is about 490,000. It was good for about a month then another guy in my dorm got 900,000
I got my a$$ whipped cause of this game I was playing it at the cab sevice spot when my Mom came in with a belt and chased me out of there. Didn't help that everytime I disappeared I was in that cab spot and my moms spare change box was much lighter than usual.
In my memories the graphics are far far better but they are nowhere close to what it actually is
Did this game actually have an ending or did you just keep going and going infinately?
Peter Gunn theme was the best
one of the best values ever for an arcade game. one quarter and you could play for quite a while, even if not that good at it
I swear... people with boners for these punishing, quarter-hungry old titles have their nostalgia goggles glued on. Looks like a nightmare of a game like most of them. Quality visuals/audio/etc for 83, though that's about all that looks good about it. lol
Yep. Old geezers. This game was so fun. What you're looking at was nothing like the arcade experience.
I only remember this game from the midway collection on the gamecube but I always thought this and smash tv were the most fun
Showbiz Pizza Place in Jersey…..1985…..memories
are there any game consoles that has this version?
I remember this game had great java port
Why no sound brother?
it DOES have sound, maybe yours isn't working
Here I go again, fantasizing of Craig Ferguson sobbing like, the Warner Brothers Looney Tunes barnyard hunting dog name Jack. It's about the enforcer, coming armed with a twin barrel shotgun.
Hard but awesome game to play. Only once did I get to the water.
anyone of you know highway pursuit?
Can you play, or just waste credits ?
20:52: Ranking Results and Final Results
Ah...Are you even trying...you cheater! LOL
Thus is a mame. In the real version the car crashes into other cars. You lose a life
No sound anymore?
bally midway, yeah ballys was mid way cross the valley...it was on a commador 6400
