    One great thing about OLED screens is that the response time is really good. What that means is how quick the pixels can change from one color to the next. So when you’re scrolling through the menus and stuff, you’ll see on the LCD that the scrolling isn’t very smooth, it might have a slight blur effect. Usually isn’t noticeable during games I think, but worth pointing out. It looks really nice

  • @shellywashere
    @shellywashere 3 года назад +223

    If I was currently in the market for a new Switch, I would go OLED. But IMO it's not enough to justify upgrading from my current one. 🤷

    • @PedroPerny
      @PedroPerny 3 года назад +24

      Yeah, like what do I get? Oled screen? Slightly bigger screen? I don't care about that because I mainly play it docked and if I mainly played it undocked I could just get a switch lite, I don't see much point in buying it

      Especially when the only ones you can find right now are being sold by scalpers for over 500.00. Definitely not worth it. I'd rather save my money to get the Steam Deck. My Animal Crossing Switch is just fine.

    • @Cortanarama
      @Cortanarama 3 года назад +4

      Exactly, these mid-gen upgrades are great for latecomers but unless my console breaks, I can't justify buying a brand new system for just faster load times/visuals/whatever the Xbox Elite did over the OG.
      It was nice actually seeing the difference in the screens though. I usually can't tell a difference unless they're side by side or something egregious like 480p.

    I'm so glad you mentioned the blue-green tint, mate. It was stressing me a little that I might have had a dodgy screen. But between you and Amok4All (whose test showed a lower red than green and blue values), it's reassured me that it's just a generally cooler-coloured display.
    I really appreciate your attention-to-detail and forthright observations.

    • @JonGPxl
      @JonGPxl 3 года назад +3

      Yeah the temperature and the tint are different. Less magenta more green.. less red more blue. Took me a little getting use to also. Same with the vivid or standard mode

    • @timebuddi
      @timebuddi 3 года назад +4

      OLED TVs have a green tint as well out of the box. Usually you get rid of it by calibrating it. Unfortunately you can't do that on the Switch. :')

    • @maxwellwinter2114
      @maxwellwinter2114 3 года назад +1

      It ships stock in VIVID mode, so that’s why. You gotta change it back in the settings. Def a market move to show the new “bright and beautiful OLED display” to show dumb customers on the shop floor how much brighter and bigger it is than the regular switch.

  • @nightfoxxiii9670
    @nightfoxxiii9670 3 года назад +11

    When Austin's comparing the cold & warm feels of the screens, what he's recognizing is the amount of bluelight the screens are emitting. It isn't just the sharper, more refined differences in the tech of the screens. The OLED has a much better passive bluelight filter than the V1 or V2 Switches do. Basically, you can stare at the OLED's screen for more time with less damage to your eyes than you can with a V1 or V2 Switch.

      i pick oled tech too even though i still use my og stuff sometimes. also i have an amoled laptop and an oled 65 inch from sony. beyond the black levels the quicker response times and colors its just a higher quality technology. its also more durable. tbh it doesnt make a huge difference on every single game because the motion blur is better MOST of the time but even on my old plasma tv i still have i see motion blur sometimes on games.. just not as bad as on lcd/led screens. in 99 out of 100 cases i would take oled over any other tech out there.

    The thing with the OG and V2 switch is that they used different screen manufacturers and those had lots of variations with color tint and warmth. I got like 3 green tinted switches last year when I was trying to buy a second one, before the 4th one was finally normal looking, just a little warm. The screen just looked really bad. On my OLED, it almost looks like that green, but not in the same way. It’s weird though. But I’ve noticed the OLED screen on my phone is also slightly green compared to my other LCD screens (iPad, MacBook). So I went into the color filter settings and changed my phone to match them better, because it bothered me how much different it looked. The OLED switch doesn’t really have an options like that, just the vivid color mode (which is really nice by the way, I would actually like it if it was even more saturated or have an option for that but I think it’s well balanced for most uses, so it’s fine). If I can, I’ll see if I can get another switch OLED to compare, maybe they all have a slight green tint
    Little side note, my OG launch switch had a very cool color temperature, white was almost blue when comparing it to other screens. It looked fine in the daytime, since it matches the color temperature, but at night it was kind of bad. My second switch, the smash bros edition, had a warmer screen, but it was more natural white than cool white, which I preferred. It worked good for night time. Sold the OG to my cousin, and that 3rd switch I was talking about that I got last year is just a little warmer, but also very little bit greener, but not bad. I wasn’t going to go through trying to buy another switch, it was when the scalping was really bad, like in April-July. Then I got a switch lite, which I got 2 of before the 3rd one was good. Same green tint for the first two (I feel bad for whoever ended up getting those switches, the colors are just gross), and the third was very slightly green, but more on the cooler cold temperature side. The green was very noticeable in a lot of places, yellows looked yellow-green, like blathers’ beak in the profile picture selection menu. In Breath of the Wild, the stone on the broken buildings looks almost green, like they were mossy, but they weren’t, instead of the normal stone-like color. Brown barrels barely looked brown, the trees are a little mossy normally, but they looked just way too green. Link’s clothes also looked a little green. It was so bad

    One thing to note with OLED limitations you do not want your screen at max brightness. every pixle is an independent LED light and from the start they slowly fade. The brighter the faster that happens. Now that time will take a long time but something to consider with OLED technology.

  • @dustyt3339
    @dustyt3339 3 года назад +3

    I think the extreme color difference in the V2 vs OLED switch is actually just because you're in Vivid mode instead of Standard. OLED Samsung phones also do this, and frankly I think Vivid is way too oversaturated. Try switching to Standard for a better comparison.

    After having a V1 model since 2017 I just got the new OLED model yesterday, after being able to find one for sale, the OLED is such a better upgrade, if anyone has a V1 model still and is tempted on getting the OLED I would highly recommended!

    Question: Do you/anyone else knows whether they fixed the Joy-con drift issues for the ones that come with this OLED Switch? Or is that still a thing for all Joy-cons?
    Here in Europe, sadly there is no service where you can get that issue repaired for free, and having it repaired costs about as much as outright buying new Joy-cons entirely.

      Even then there's no point because they'll drift too.

    Basically I’m gonna explain this whole thing with Switch v1 vs Oled with Apple’s new phone!
    The iPhone 13 has slightly smaller bezels, a smaller notch, and a better screen, along with a slightly longer battery. Other than that, it’s the exact same as the iPhone 12.
    I’d you don’t have an iPhone, go for the 13. If you have the 12, it’s not really justified to spend a bunch of money for a glossy redesign even though the one you have does the exact same things as the new one.
    And now, replace iPhone 12 with the switch v1, and iPhone 13 with the OLED switch.
    If you don’t have a switch already, get the OLED. If you do, it’s not really justified to spend 300$ for a glossy redesign because the one you probably already have can do essentially the same things as the OLED.
    Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.
