thanks dude, really helped out because i was really worried about my antivirus was scanning it as dangerous and I didn't know what to do. but then i looked it up and saw your video! appreciate it
A few months ago I downloaded it and well I didnt think it was a virus but the site looked a bit dodgy but I downloaded it anyway... 5 malwares + were put on my pc one of them being chromeium and some fake anti virus. I factory rested my pc. Let's this be a lesson the best anti virus is your brain.
I think they are talking about the modern Cheat Engine site, not either of my links - there's a few people who have commented here about being pressured into installing Chromium, but this doesn't happen with version 6.4.
thanks for the video, I tried installing cheat engine from the main website assuming it would be legit but my computer force deleted the installer when i tried running the program. I usually assume my antivirus may be too sensitive but this time I was a bit suspicious (the website design didn't help with that). If it weren't for this video I probably would have kept trying to install the virus because everywhere else on the internet says it is safe.
Im lucky I have such a good antivirus it said it was dangerous at first but that happens with a lot of stuff so I just kinda ignored it and ran it anyway it started attacking me but my antivirus just quarantined and deleted it instantly before anything dangerous happened. I guess im using an outdated version, but at least I can still use it. Thanks!
My Windows Defender has passed my copy of 6.4 in many scans over the years, though oddly today flagged up the OpenCandy, which IIRC is a functional thing needed for editing variables in other software (in that the properties of Cheat Engine are exactly that). But I can appreciate considering that too risky. Tying that to the VirusTotal result, I've written thoughts about that in replies to several similar comments, pointing out that the bigger anti-virus providers (Norton, McAfee) think it's safe, and they have the money to rule out false positives - Like they are the ones who I would expect to really know. It's certainly a lot less-unsafe than the modern one (which is kind of wilfully unsafe), but I agree there is no such thing is guaranteed-safe on the internet. Further, because it's been around for several years, it's not unreasonable to think that the exploits/vulnerabilities any virus from back then utilised would have been removed via Windows Updates, and it's run fine on my computer for years without viruses or hacks. But mostly this video was my attempt at showing something a lot safer than the latest versions everyone else keeps highlighting on RUclips - like I've seen videos of people saying it's necessary to disable their antivirus when they install the modern one, which is terrifyingly reckless…
Yeah, I have a follow-up to do, because occasionally there are videos explaining how to install without getting a virus, without realising that the steps you have to take strongly indicate that the main application is also a virus. Did the 2014 version pass through Malwarebytes?
Voiced Gaming Malwarebytes did mark off some files after installing Cheat Engine 6.4. I uninstalled and reinstalled Cheat Engine to make sure I didn’t have viruses on my PC beforehand, but the same thing happened. It’s possible that Malwarebytes is being too aggressive with its virus protection.
@@rapterranger771 It's possible, and worth knowing. This is the first case I've heard of a non-web virus scanner flagging up version 6.4. In other comments here people have mentioned that when using a whole set of web scanners at once, certain web scanners flag up this six-year-old file, but most of the bigger web scanners don't, and modern-day Windows Defender on my PC says it's fine. I can believe that more-obscure antivirus companies would err on the side of caution and be more aggressive, whereas bigger companies who can afford more thorough tests could eliminate false positives to impress their user base. So while I can't say that any version of Cheat Engine is safe, I'll still say this is about as safe as I'll probably get. If you're unsure, you could explore even earlier versions of the Cheat Engine website on archive.org, getting 6.3, 6.2 etc until you get one that passes your software, I'd be interested to know the outcome.
Notice that all the flags came from really-obscure providers, whereas big suppliers said nothing was wrong. The only exception is Microsoft, but a manual Microsoft Security Essentials scan done today says there is nothing wrong with this file, and that's with the most up-to-date information. Web scanners have some limitations, and so sometimes generate false positives. Bigger antivirus companies want to protect their clients, but they also don't want to generate false positives that irritate their clients' work. So if multiple big companies say a file is safe, they are saying it is safe for their millions of paying users (far more than those smaller providers combined), who would stop paying them if they were incorrect or lying. Furthermore, this file has existed for nearly 6 years. If there really was a virus in it, McAfee, Symantec, Sophos, and MSE would be raising the alarm, and The Internet Archive wouldn't keep storing it.
I downloaded the most recent version before i watched this video. You are right even still. This program hosed my computer and “avast antivirus” was installed and copied to every fiber of my computers memory and every file accociated with it is un deletable and i “dont have permission to delete them”
Yeah, it bothers me how they know they're abusing people's trust in the software. The only upside is that this 6-year-old version of the software is backed up in reliable places.
Yup, i downloaded it from the original site and got a virus the other day, i got the right version from another site but i was surprised to see that the original side has a virus :/
It is regrettably cunning - Cheat Engine is supposed to be _the_ program that you let access more of your processes than an ordinary program, so to put a virus in it makes people think the warnings associated with it are the antivirus software getting a false positive (which to be fair, sometimes happened with legitimate versions). So by the very nature of Cheat Engine, there will always be strong motivation for people to hack the site and put viruses in the installers.
Oh no, that's terrible! If it's an important computer, you could try using Darik's Boot And Nuke, which is used for serious erasing of the hard drive (dban.org/ scroll to the bottom and select Download DBAN, ignore the fancy trial software). You would need your Windows install disc (or to make one using another machine, I wouldn't make one with an infected machine!) to put it back. Remember that you can have unlicensed copies of Windows 10 for free, you just lose a few personalisation features.
The link does not work anymore unfortunately =( Does anyone have a copy of the installer that they could send to me? When I try to download the current version of cheat engine windows defender & malwarebytes both freak out.
I didn't know the OneSwitch link had expired (I've now removed it) but the first Archive.org link works fine, you just click the big green button. Fingers crossed your antivirus software responds better to it.

The argument made in the video is that the modern website gives off lots of clear signs of being unsafe, none of which are present in the wayback machine, and I suspect that the Internet Archive wouldn't store viruses (though I've not confirmed this). Furthermore, you can download it without any flags being raised by your browser, and a scan from any of the big antivirus companies won't throw a flag about it despite being aware of the file for 7 years (meaning they've had several years to probe it; smaller antivirus companies are more likely to give this a false positive). Windows 10 was released about a year after this file and is frequently updated, and if this file were dangerous then it would know about it, but it never complains. On the one hand, installing any file from the internet entails a risk. That's a good first-response, although always remember to scan downloaded files before opening/installing. For further security/reassurance, things you could do include: 1. Downloading a trial version of a common premium antivirus (e.g. Norton), have that replace Windows Defender (temporarily), update it, and have that scan the computer as well. Before you do so, if you use Google Chrome, make sure you are signed into it on your account otherwise you might lose all your browser data in the rollback. 3. If you're even more paranoid, take a full backup of your key files and user files onto an external hard drive (which is wise to do once or twice a year anyway), take a screenshot or photo on your phone of your list of installed programs (via Control Panel), and then reset your Windows edition to factory settings. Put all your files back, installed programs again (apart from the dodgy Cheat Engine), do the scans. 4. If you're even even even more paranoid, in the above step, instead of doing a factory reset, get yourself a Windows install disc and a valid registration key. Then go to dban.org/ and scroll to the bottom and click on Download DBAN, which is an iso, and burn that to a disc. Boot up your computer loading that as the boot disc, and it will allow you to completely erase the hard drive - this might take up to 24 hours, but will erase the virus (and everything else). Then install Windows and put all your files back and install your programs again

Do you mean with the web scanners? I've replied to a few comments down here about how the web scanners throw up false positives (and you notice big well-resourced companies like Norton say it's fine, and tiny ones you've never heard of who don't have the resources to resolve false positives decide to be cautious and call the file dangerous). What to do is use the antivirus on your computer, and if it detects no viruses in this 6-year-old file (scan it only, do not run it until you feel sure), it means there almost certainly aren't any, because your computer's antivirus' hosting company has had several years to figure out if there are any viruses in it. My Windows Defender detects nothing, and that's good enough for me, and you need to decide your own confidence threshold. If you are extra nervous, download a trial version of another antivirus from a big company, install that, and check the same file. I suggest one of the Norton ones, because as I recall you could either submit a file for analysis or check how other Norton users have responded to it.
I did a little search on the Internet Archive captures, and it appears there started being a version for Mac in mid-2017, however that's about a year after the website started looking kind of hacked, and the Windows installer was (and is) regularly bundled with malware. So you could get it for Mac, I just don't know if it would be safe, and MacOS is way out of my knowledge base.
No. On the main page right now, all three links for downloads linked to redirects, which do weird impersonations of the main website. And on the Downloads page, under "Older version", versions 6.5 and 6.4 aren't hosted where they should be. While 6.6 and 6.7 do have sensible-looking links on the Downloads page, 4 dodgy links out of 6 means I wouldn't trust those last 2 either. It's better to use the Internet Archive's version which I linked to, and pretend this software stopped getting developed as of 2014.
If you mean out of my links, it's the exact same file, although the OneSwitch site isn't always doing https nowadays, so I would follow the Internet Archive link. If you mean from the modern Cheat Engine website, I'd be extremely wary of it.
@@VoicedGaming well, AFAIK my laptop hasn't run into any big issues yet with the file from cheat engine. Nearly a month, so if something bad happens I'll still have my main rig safe.
I'm afraid I can't help much: -In early 2017 they did start releasing Cheat Engine for Mac, but immediately at that point the downloads page had an extremely long URL for the download link. So this was only available for Mac at a time after the website was identifiably dodgy. -Forum posts from the end of 2018 say that the .dmg installs various troubling Mac software. -Currently it's hosted on Patreon, but that doesn't really mean anything. So you "can" get it for your computer, but it's super risky and I wouldn't if I were you.
So long as that's all you did, and never run it, I think not. However if you got tricked into going to a strange website, or confirmed/installed something weird in your browser (all of which the modern-day website tries to do), then you would still be at risk of future viruses via that browser.
Where did you get the file from? If it's from OneSwitch or Archive.org, I can look into it. If you got it from the modern-day Cheat Engine website, I'm afraid I don't actually know how to help, beyond things like virus scans, System Restore to before you got the file, googling for solutions, and reinstalling your operating system.
@@LightniteProductions I downloaded and checked the files (including checking they are the same file from the two sites, which verifies that neither of the websites have been hacked), they behave and get deleted just fine. I hope your computer starts behaving.
Voiced Gaming I haven’t restarted it yet, but I will later and update you about it. Also, thanks a lot for this video! I originally installed the hacked version of cheat engine and it gave me a lot of viruses. Luckily, I managed to get all of them out of my system, but the end, I didn’t get cheat engine. Thank god I finally found out about this video!! 👍👍
It is the most safe that can be determined. It's been on the Internet Archive for 6 years, and your desktop antivirus doesn't complain about it despite it surely being a known file for 6 years. Desktop antivirus software needs to be aware of every virus that's ever been discovered, so if it's given a pass today after years of vetting, my gut feeling is it's good - but I can't make promises of safety. The decision is down to you. That said, I'm quite certain you will have a bad time if you got the up-to-date version, as I've had a few commenters talk about bad malware which was impossible to remove without doing very serious wiping of hard drives.
In general, Archive.org, because they'll have effectively checked the website for weird redirects and scanned executables before they archive it. Checking the main Cheat Engine site now, versions 6.8.3, 6.5 and 6.4 are not hosted on github (6.6 & 6.7 are), with shortened but still-confusing URLs, so I think the main site is still hacked.
The links in the description would've covered you. This one is from the safe 2014 capture of the Cheat Engine website: web.archive.org/web/20140723140054/mirror3.cheatengine.org/download/d1/CheatEngine64.exe
I trust it completely - that one is from Archive.org. Additionally, it perfectly matches the one I downloaded from the Cheat Engine site way back in 2014, long before the website started getting hacked. Generally, the versions you get from archive.org are going to be your safest bet. The only advantage in more recent versions is going to be a bit of UI and bug cleanup, and maybe defeating recent games which have been coded to resist Cheat Engine. But such games are very few and very far between, and are not remotely worth the risk of getting a more recent version from a hacked site.
Do you mean The Internet Archive? That's just how it displays archived webpages. If however you mean the places the current Cheat Engine site directs you to, then that's what I'd expect.
Jarmingo The video explicitly said the one from the main website was dangerous. You should of downloaded the one from the description. Now how did it hurt your pc? i might be able to help
I've checked the links - OneSwitch.org is on HTTP instead of HTTPS, so your browser might warn you. But the earlier (2014) version of the Cheat Engine website is fine, and from there you can download the file securely.
Yep deffinatly shady. Dowloaded it and windows defender went crazy with notifications with suspicious malware, aswell as chrome wanted me to download an extension. My pc have crashed about 4 times a day the last 4 days where i installed cheat engine. I've removed all the junk files that it carried with it, but i suspect my chrome might be infected and is causing the crashes. Haven't uninstalled cheat engine yet tho ;D
You really should uninstall the version you got, and instead follow the ones I linked to In the description. Particularly the Internet Archive one, which you can verify is from 2014, before the site got hacked. It should work just as well as the dodgy stuff from the site today.

LETS GOOOO
@@yellowcrewmate5802 so basically what i did i went to the archive.org website, and downloaded the .rar no installer file, worked for me
I think you all are nuts. Its a realtime ram editor and of antivirus is going to throw a bitch when a program tries to alter another programs memory
i doubt there is, but is there any version for mac?
I did a little search on the Internet Archive captures, and it appears there started being a version for Mac in mid-2017, however that's about a year after the website started looking kind of hacked, and the Windows installer was (and is) regularly bundled with malware. So you could get it for Mac, I just don't know if it would be safe, and MacOS is way out of my knowledge base.
Is it safe now in 2019?
It's better to use the Internet Archive's version which I linked to, and pretend this software stopped getting developed as of 2014.
cheat engine 7.4 optional offers be like
Have you tried the .rar version, the one without the installer?
If you mean out of my links, it's the exact same file, although the OneSwitch site isn't always doing https nowadays, so I would follow the Internet Archive link.
If you mean from the modern Cheat Engine website, I'd be extremely wary of it.
@@VoicedGaming well, AFAIK my laptop hasn't run into any big issues yet with the file from cheat engine. Nearly a month, so if something bad happens I'll still have my main rig safe.
How do I get cheat engine on mac? please help
I'm afraid I can't help much:
-In early 2017 they did start releasing Cheat Engine for Mac, but immediately at that point the downloads page had an extremely long URL for the download link. So this was only available for Mac at a time after the website was identifiably dodgy.
-Forum posts from the end of 2018 say that the .dmg installs various troubling Mac software.
-Currently it's hosted on Patreon, but that doesn't really mean anything.
So you "can" get it for your computer, but it's super risky and I wouldn't if I were you.
aww that’s not too good. Thank you though!
Can you get a virus from just downloading one without installing?
So long as that's all you did, and never run it, I think not. However if you got tricked into going to a strange website, or confirmed/installed something weird in your browser (all of which the modern-day website tries to do), then you would still be at risk of future viruses via that browser.
Voiced Gaming hey man do you know what’s the safe way to download winrar
@@Toxiac707 Go to www.rarlab.com/ It's the official site.
I can't delete the file after the download. Can you help plz? :/
@@VoicedGaming I got it from OneSwitch.com and I also clicked your link too. But, I will also try restarting it too
@@LightniteProductions I downloaded and checked the files (including checking they are the same file from the two sites, which verifies that neither of the websites have been hacked), they behave and get deleted just fine.
@@LightniteProductions Were you able to delete it?
thank you bro now i am happy!!😎
So is the cheat engine version6.4 safe to use from your link?
@@VoicedGaming downloading with zip file is safer?
@@LukoTin I think you should do the Internet Archive link, because that one will stay online forever, and is subject to more checks.
@@yellowcrewmate5802 there is no adware you probably downlaoded some random links your self
0:55 what game?
Crash Time II, followed by Planets Under Attack.
What site is the safest for downloading cheat engine?
In general, Archive.org, because they'll have effectively checked the website for weird redirects and scanned executables before they archive it. Checking the main Cheat Engine site now, versions 6.8.3, 6.5 and 6.4 are not hosted on github (6.6 & 6.7 are), with shortened but still-confusing URLs, so I think the main site is still hacked.
@@VoicedGaming Can you give me direct link for download
The links in the description would've covered you. This one is from the safe 2014 capture of the Cheat Engine website:
web.archive.org/web/20140723140054/mirror3.cheatengine.org/download/d1/CheatEngine64.exe
@@VoicedGaming This is a version what you using and is safe and you trust it?
I trust it completely - that one is from Archive.org. Additionally, it perfectly matches the one I downloaded from the Cheat Engine site way back in 2014, long before the website started getting hacked. Generally, the versions you get from archive.org are going to be your safest bet.
The only advantage in more recent versions is going to be a bit of UI and bug cleanup, and maybe defeating recent games which have been coded to resist Cheat Engine. But such games are very few and very far between, and are not remotely worth the risk of getting a more recent version from a hacked site.
The web you get it of looks so faulty
Do you mean The Internet Archive? That's just how it displays archived webpages.
If however you mean the places the current Cheat Engine site directs you to, then that's what I'd expect.
Voiced GamingI mean the website you get it of looks risky
thank you. i will try downloading your version, i'll hopefully be happy with the result, otherwise ill come back to the comment section ;)
So it worked?

Jarmingo Oh ok nice, did you download the one from the description? im still curious if its a virus but my vm isnt working
thank you
Does the link still work?
I've checked the links - OneSwitch.org is on HTTP instead of HTTPS, so your browser might warn you.
But the earlier (2014) version of the Cheat Engine website is fine, and from there you can download the file securely.
@@VoicedGaming Thanks
Like it might be worth doing a System Restore, winding it back those 4 days.
@@VoicedGaming there is suckh a thing as winding your system back?
What did you do after and is your computer fine?
Thx for the safe version cheat engine because when i download the one from the website my anti virus goes off and in the installer it asked me to install some weird software
