  • Frameless motors use din robotics provide light weight, compact design and heat dissipation with increased power. The increase in robotics can be seen worldwide in such industries as, manufacturing, agriculture, warehouse and logistics, and many more.
The robotic evolution, however, does not stop just on Earth. It reaches space and moon exploration. For example, a new, robotic lunar rover will be launched to the moon in the next few years. This lunar rover will explore and study the moon's environment to better understand the origin and distribution of lunar water and other potential resources.
A unique solution fit for the moon
Due to the moon's heat dissipation in an environment with no atmosphere, Parker's frameless motors for the lunar rovers were sized to operate on 48vdc and at vacuum levels down to 10^ - 12 torr.
    Frameless Servo Motors
Parker's HPS also provided in-depth information, such as the Dissipated Power Speed Curve.
With this information, the customer was able to identify proper conduction and radiation paths in the design of a special housing that helps to wick heat away from the motor. By optimizing the performance of the motor in such a way, the overall envelope size and weight was kept to a minimum. This feature was key to the success of the lunar rover design. In addition, a portion of the lunar rovers will have redundant motors, two motors per wheel. With both motors operating together, peak performance can be achieved. if a failure occurs tone motor, the other motor can still operate sufficiently to complete the mission.
Other key features of Parker's Frameless Motors for the project include:
    - Zero mechanical connections between motor and load, resulting in high reliability
    - Multiple winding selections for optimized performance
    - Cost effective component, offering high performance in a small space
    Results
By simulating the lunar rover's dissipated power speed curves, we worked with the customer to identify and address potential system inefficiencies. This process resulted in an enhanced design, reducing the motor's overall envelope size and weight. This, in turn, resulted in the overall, increased performance of the lunar rover. As the lunar rovers, make their way to the moon, we anticipate receiving more detailed quantitative data in the future.
