Same goes for the Routemaster Buses aswell, the way drivers used to drive them in service like this and is exactly how these ones are being driven in this video, skipping gears and changing gear full throttle and then no gear at-all slowing down. Skipping gears at speed and using the engine as a brake is a bad idea. If you skip gears when the Gearbox is ready to take it you can shift say from 4 to gear 2 and then move off again in 2nd gear but not just put into 2nd after acceleration in 4th
These days most drivers leave the bus in drive and their foot on the brake when picking up passengers. Modern day auto gearboxes are able to cope with that now.
That’s true the more modern ones are able to because it acts like it is in neutral until you take the handbrake off and you have to tap the accelerator for it to move and engage again
