Appreciate the love. 9 is definitely my best shoe. And the 8 came out in 2021-22, so it’s been nearly 3 seasons. Delay was because they had to scrap the original design of the 9.
I like the 2 year timing because it feels like brands are taking forever to put out colorways for popular models and then the window closes and it's time for the next release. Way of Wade has done a great job with the WOW10s, tons of colorways and they've really supported that model in the right way.
Extply means Extended Play. It's a music reference. It means a short album, usually something less than 30mins whereas a full album is called a Long Player or LP.
@@donsworld2000 from a music perspective, it could go a lot of ways. Artists release EPs either as deluxe/bonus additions to an already released album, as a teaser for the next album or as a standalone release. I guess the Dame 8 EPs follow the deluxe edition route.
I think the 2 year wait could benefit certain lines. Stuff like the Giannis, Bookers, and the Lucas should take some time off to really work on their stuff. The consistent stuff like the Curries, KDs, and Lebrons usually just need minor tweaks so being ‘em out every year.
For brands that have a bunch of signature athletes like Nike and adidas, they could definitely stagger the launch of some of them and release new sigs that complement each other (ex: Ja, KD, LeBron in one year; Sabrina, Book, Freak the next). Allowing the sigs to get a break allows for more complete ideas to be implemented, as you said, which has also been a common gripe with the recent Pokemon games that seem to be churned out non-stop in the past few years.
Always enjoy the technical breakdown of the shoes on the channel and not just focus solely on the visuals, really makes me appreciate how advanced basketball shoes have become nowadays.
Happy adidas making their basketball sneakers for lifestyle purposes too thank you Adidas and thank you Chris for reviewing other brands outside of Jordans & Nikes 👌🏾
I think it'd be good if brands focused on releasing less models, but doing more colorways and updates of those models. there's so many hoop shoes out there that have a lot of potential, but might have a few problems that could easily be fixed with releasing a v2, instead of scratching everything and releasing a completely different shoe as a "continuation" of that line. having less models in the lineup also puts quality over quantity. new balance for example is only releasing a handful of hoop shoes per year, but they're steadily improving these, and the changes they implement make sense most of the time. meanwhile, nike is doing nike things
I remember getting the Dame 2 in that Oreo colorway because of this channel and playing in them for my middle school basketball team then beating them up all the way up to high school. Now the 9th ones are out and I just turned 21, man time flies lol.
I think two years is the perfect amount of time between new sigs. Gives time for real improvements, real good reviews and new colorways before the next release.
I just did the same as you and went on EBay and bought a pair. My brother lives in Portland. My very first year I visited I saw Damian on a jet ski on the Willamette River. Cool dude. Said hi to everyone. Been a fan ever since. And I’m from Detroit.
I think the 2 year cycle is great, if they do it like the Dame line with the "extended play" mid-life refresh. New colorway every few months to keep it fresh in our minds. There's FAR too many shoes being released every year.
I live in europe and I bought the bape version today and they're really nice. Not the softest cushioning out there, but more than enough and just comfortable all around. It really feels like they put more thought and effort into this model do i would agree that the longer wait was worth it.
These shoes look great!!! Hopefully they are as good or even better than the AE1s. Also, talking about scraping the back of your heels/ankles, the EQLZ shoes, I love them but man do they hurt the back of your heels/ankles.
as a desginer, YES, I dont mind new colorways or small tweaks on the second year run of the model, but if we go each year from one to the next, and then the next etc, some models barely change a thing, or the "new tech" thats put on the newest shoe is iether so good that there was no reason to buy the previous model, or so bad that there is no reason to buy the newest one
The 8 had the 8 extended play referencing An EP album. you get a few more tracks continuing the original album. And also that dames and artist it works well for his story.
Yeah, I agree there should be more staggered releases. Sadly that's the way most things are now, since most companies have the resources to produce things annually. Looking forward to the performance review on this pair!
I actually think these are one of Dames best designs. I’ll def have to give them a try at some point. I just picked up the Dame Certifieds the other day to workout in.
2 years is good. I am a wear tester for Trek cycling shoes and they took longer but they incorporated the feedback. Iterations take time and I think giving them the time is better for the end result.
The design of these shoes is so cool, like the groove in the support pieces going into the groove on the outsole? Adidas has been killing it lately with the hoop shoes. So to answer the question of the day, I wouldn't hate a new model, then a refresh a year later, then a totally new model after 2 years. Like how iPhone used to do with the numbered phone vs the S model. Last thing, I laughed out loud at the Mutant Mayhem "she's milking me" clip.
i bought the 8s a couple years ago and really like those. i thought i would be good just sticking with those, but damn these look fire. all the reviews ive watched so far also make me believe these are gonna be a top tier performer. this and the red colorway dont look too bad either. i need these
Saw your post on IG and I was hyped! Got to check our local website of adidas and found the Dame 9 X bape… got to order it online and cant wait for it… this would be my first dame shoe 🤘
Great video as always! I actually really dig these design-wise, and the comfort sounds promising. That exposed heel stitch is such a strange decision though, hopefully it isn't an issue. For the question, I lean towards a 2 year cycle being a good idea for a lot of lines but I think some should still update yearly so hoopers have something to look forward to when their current shoe(s) get too beat. Maybe a 2 year cycle would even benefit them though since they could probably get another pair of a model they already know they like on a discount.
The two year delay wasn’t intentional. Internally there were delays with the first iterations of the Dame 9 from a design perspective, which ultimately ended up being scrapped. But to your point, the extra time ended up being a blessing in disguise because the Dame 9 looks like it was designed very well.
Excited to try these out. I was lucky enough to be able to get the two bape versions of these shoes. Was also thinking of getting the AE 1 GA but I may pass if these work out to be good. Thanks for your review!
i actually think the 2 year timing works for all parties. It lets brands creatively explore more and more testing with the athletes so the shoe is actually good, while it lets the consumers (us) to enjoy the product that so many people work on without being forced fed the next "greatest" thing ie the next model after we just bought the last one.
Just got mine and broke them out. Pretty comfortable and are fire . Had to kinda stretch the sockliner booty part a little so they're easier to put on but good so far
It's a similar concept with golf equipment, they release clubs right on top of each other and it cheapens the model. But when a company releases equipment every two years instead of one there is more appreciation for the release and the equipment itself instead of "oh here's another one"
As a designer myself, I know of multiple occasions of designteams (unrelated products from sneakers) who already have product lines designed and in progress multiple years in advance, but because corporations expect the designers to cut costs or improve features every year to meet "spreadsheet-milestones" they postpone revolutionary upgrades purely to meet those requirements. I always get massively angry about that because they end up releasing worse products then they could (should) have, and creating more waste & contamination in the process.
like the artist analogy...agree...only put out product that the athlete is enthusiastic about instead of trying to meet quotas...2 year releases seem better than annual
i dont mind the 2 year timeline as long as there are different colorway / collabs coming out ... also with those 2 years, I expect something well thought out and aligns with the player if they are signature shoes would love to see the d9 as a premium and in other colorways
I think brands need to follow this 2 year format. Pairs are starting to look very similar, and sometimes that may not be a bad thing. But it can bring back interesting pairs that can bring back some life to the current basketball shoe lineup
I would love to see them keep a model for two years and do like a revised model in between like they did the Boost version of the Dame 2. Nike can do the same thing. Maybe make a premium model with premium materials and another with more suede or synthetic or a combo as well for the lifestyle.
I'm gonna wait for the performance review before I buy, its either these or the AE1s. I'm gonna base this on performance coz if I go with aesthetic, I think the AE1s look better.
I've always wondered why new things need to come out every year and why we need a drastic change every year. I would like for companies to take time and really get it right for the next model and make adjustments to the current model to make it better during its run. We wake, we live, we type... FOR THE ALGORITHM!
Was able to snag the Bape 9’s in the black color way, was worried about it being half a size down due to availability as you stated BUT not anymore since you did the same 😂🎉🎉🎉
Favorite Dame shoe,it was the 5 Wakanda edition black panther. The look of the 9s it looks like a Yeezy, but light strike is not something I can wear with my feet
I feel like you are on the right track, i think they release way too much too often. I feel like at LEAST a year in betwern to a maximum of 2. It allows for more design/testing time and also us to fully enjoy the current model and build hype for the next.

1.5 or 2 years seems like a good balance between releases. Adidas is letting the AE1 breathe and they don't seem to be rushing a new model. It would be nice if they modify their signatures ( high/low version) so they could allow more time between signatures models.
when it comes to the dame line, I think 2 years is a long time. he's had some pretty solid shoes each year, but that's just an absurd amount of time. I wouldn't even count the extended plays

Probably your best looking she by faaaar. Probably buying these since I loved the 8s
Wait its actually dame
I remember buying the dame 2s because of your review, damn im old.
Same! The Dame 2 was such a dope shoe. Hoping they do a retro of them at some point. Never got the Rip City pair.
Lmao same. One of my fave shoes ever
Same here, Dame 2, 3 and 4, that was a great run.

Love the idea of "outdoor" versions of signature shoes. Like the Jordan 2010 did with the baby blue "For The Love Of The Game" model 😍
