In my opinion, comedies are funniest when the characters are either: unlikable and problematic, or really naive and innocent. These kinds of people can get themselves into more ridiculous situations
One of the things I hate most about this show is that it implies everyone who struggles with their weight is just naturally a bad person. It’s fat phobic…
@@unionunicorn6776 not really. There were characters that struggled with their weight and were bad people. There were people who didn't struggle with their weight and were bad people. The whole show is about HORRIBLE PEOPLE! You're just throwing the word around...
I watch a lot of true crime so to me it makes sense with how she acts and how she ends up. Some people really do act that insane. I think her character made me tap into my true crime mind to think of a mentally ill future serial killer rather then a normal teenager
I have always felt that the main character in a movie doesn't have to be "the good guy" they just need to be interesting and like you already said patty was interesting
I agree with a lot of the points. Honestly, I think the marketing for this show really did it dirty because while it has a bunch of themes running around, including eating disorders with Patty, I found it to be more so about addiction-in terms of Patty, anyway. Hence _Insatiable._ It's my guilty pleasure, and I've never regretted spending the time to watch it. Sure it could've been better handled than it was, but it was still fun.
I never realized before but Insatiable is actually pretty similar to "YOU": The narration, the killing, the not actually wanting to kill but always getting caught up in this kind of situation... Only difference being that YOU doesn't have as much comedic elements
@@gingerkatherina Whoa no need to get so angry over an honest mistake. Yeah I see now that they premiered less than a month apart and Insatiable was indeed first… My bad lol
i wasn’t sure if i would when the video started, but i SO agree with you. i think the show had a lot more potential than people give it credit for, but that the writers weren’t confident enough to make it good. it’s less offensive than it seemed in some ways and moreso in others, and overall, is a fascinatingly mixed bag.
I think the problem was they tried to act like this show was a thoughtful well planned out show with deep meaning behind every scene. So people judge it like they were watching game of thrones or something and called it trash when it didn't turn out to be this politically woke show they can have discussion with their friends about. but if they had marketed it as a show that you turn your brain off for and was goofy with hidden meaning but wasn't suppose to be taken too seriously then people probably would have been fine with it.
@@47jjak definitely agree, it was honestly sort of similar to Pretty Little Liars in that sense. The writers emphasized so much that everything was intentional and that you had to pay attention to it because everything had meaning, but people that watched it and paid attention to every little detail noticed a lot of things that didn't make sense. Then the reveals were kind of decided on later and we didn't get the full pay off they promised. I think with shows like this you have to market it in a way that people are not going to expect more than they get. Unless they are spending hours and hours carefully curating every scene, it just lets people down when it's not what they promised.
I can't beleive this show got cancelled but Riverdale is still there....The show was very overtop and I enjoyed it because the characters were flawed yet attaching
i‘m so sad that there are so many people who stopped watching after a few episodes, because in the beginning it seemed like all her problems go away because she got skinny, but Patty herself said „when my outside has changed, it didn’t really make me happier“ in sesson 2.
I had such a blast with this show. I'm obese myself & never felt offended. I saw it kinda a like a Cartoon show in real life, like South Park or something. I just watched it, to see what crazy over the top shenanigans Patty got into this time :D
exactly, as someone who got body shamed a lot this show is actually so comforting. and not in the sense that patty gets skinny noooo but in the sense that it’s acc a problem and that it’s other ppl that are ignorant and u shouldn’t feel bad about urself and also what body shaming can do to someone
Personally I think her attraction to Christian made more sense than her attraction to Brick. I felt like the show was depicting Patty as like a budding psychopath so although Brick was a guy she had lusted over for so long she would quickly lose interest in him because hes just a normal dude and Patty craves chaos on repeat so it made more sense to me for her to go for the guy that is dark and mysterious and wants to run away with her. I loved the relationship between her and bob exactly because they were equally as toxic and they brought out the absolute worst and best in each other, they put each other in the most chaotic situations but at the end of the day there was so much unconditional love in the bond that those two crazies formed n im here for it
its incredibly annoying when people say that her obsession with food is like a negative fat stereotype but it was never because she was fat. It's binge eating disorder, something i struggled with, something that can become very very dark. Like the "childlike attachment to the candy bar" the critic called fatphobic. It's not a fat people thing. It's a B.E.D. thing. I really loved the scene where she poured soap on a basket of baked goods to prove she wasnt going to eat it, only to later eat the soapy snacks, because it's really good representation of how dark this ED can become. It was just so nice to see my own experiences represented.
I really liked this show. I liked Patty as a character she was very flawed but i could relate to her on some level. Also i hate how it ended on a cliffhanger. Like her embracing her love of killing would of been fun to see and intresting coming from our main character
It’s honestly my favorite show and it’s way more nuanced than many people think. It’s also my exact type of humor, like the ironic moments are comical, like when Patty got kidnapped in the middle of a kidnapping, and when she gets arrested for a triple homicide the morning after she committed a different triple homicide.
i loved the show, it wasn’t perfect but it was risky and weren’t afraid of unlikable characters. that’s what i wanted for soooo long and i’ll never forgive the people who got it cancelled. it ended with patty finally admitting she likes to kill the next season could’ve been so interesting
Honestly I loved this show. I’ve been bullied for my weight most of my life (in hindsight I wasn’t even big as a child, I don’t know why I was made fun of so bad), and the part in the bikini where she’s uncomfortable in the washroom had me crying. I thought overall the show was hilarious and I wish there was a season 3.
This show will always hold a special place in my heart for two reasons. 1) it helped me realize i have an eating disorder 2) it helped me reconcile with my sister who has always been prettier and had an easier time than me by realizing her life is hard in different ways.
The show is so much better when you look at Patty as a villain and I think the show is so unique for this reason. I think the best thing about this show is that its main character isnt a good person she's chaotic and mean but funny and this is a really good mix to keep a show entertaining because we can root for the bad guy. When we see things from Patty's point of view and we understand her thought process for some of the absurd things that she does it can make sense to us but it doesn't mean that what she did was okay. The writers make it so we want to forgive Patty but she makes it almost impossible and I think that's so realistic to what having someone that manipulative in your life is like. They are constantly lashing out or hurting the people around them and even though they know they should walk away those that care about them are completely entangled in their web. I love this show as a dark comedy about a pageant queen/serial killer.
I love your fair and honest take on things cuz a lot of others would much rather judge from an already biased perspective or go into it wanting to hate it. Although watching people roast it is fun, there is still something more satisfying about a reasonable and open-minded dissection. Which is why I love your channel so much!!😍
I loved this video, and I think just about everything you said was on point! I found Insatiable to be quite a refreshing show in that while being centered around some pretty serious topics it wasn't just a super emotional and sad show filled to the brim with deep messages (although the long scene of Patty eating the sheet cake did make me cry). I think since we are in a time where every show seems to be trying to be politically correct and "cover their bases" Insatiable stood out to a lot of people, and not in a good way. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the characters weren't always likeable, this show did a pretty good job in my opinion that not everything is black and white and while one may fit society's standard of beauty, they can still be messy and even straight up ugly inside.
I feel the same. There was a lot of potential. It feels confused. It often acts as a satire, then sometimes as a comedy, then a thriller/drama. Yes it could be all of those but it somehow felt jarring... I think it was good they introduced Patty's impulses related to her eating disorder. By the end of the series they started to talk about her emotional issues & I found that fascinating. But they sort of glossed over it. Then they seemed to scramble for the finale and it's a shame they couldn't do a more in detail lead up to her final revelation about killing. I might be the only one but I think they should have focussed less on the pageant coach & more on Patty's issues. I feel like most of his storyline was just...goofy and I think they could have kept the satire & comedy without doing goofy...
Agreed with most of your points! I also prefer Bob and Bob together than their other couples, they were so interesting and that pairing with Patty’s mom and Bob didn’t make any sense lol. With all the crazy storylines and all of that I still love this show. Sad it was canceled because I was so curious about how things were gonna turn out
People said this show wasn't sensitive enough because they are OVERLY sensitive like do the audience need the producers to send someone to each viewers personal house to personally hold their hand when they view? This is like a soap opera let's be real....its meant to be extreme and dramatic...just like a soap opera. The satire was hilarious. And they very rarely if at all actually made you laugh AT people in the show if anything they had characters make fun of people and put that in negative light. They had you laughing with people not at them. They honestly were very sensitive when approaching this stuff for the type of comedy it is.....like I mean look at south park. Some things are meant to just be not serious, bring up difficult topics in an even way and I applaud that and wish that wouldn't die out due to cancel police. I think the character made sense all through out. And her love interests made sense to me. And Christian lead to foreshadowing and revealing her deeper/darker side and showed how badly she wanted connection and revenge and how that can get confused. I thought it was brilliant! People say patty didn't have character development and needed more redeeming qualities.....she developed she just developed NEGATIVELY....she had less and less redeeming factors because she was changing into a worse person. This is story of her decline...not her rise. She was a VILLIAN not meant to be likeable....her being selfish and self focused is how a LOT of people really are.....so why not show a character like that?? She came to realizations she UNDERSTOOD she was terrible and a murder......but she LIKED IT. And people didn't like that conclusion. But I thought it was an awesome twist of her realizing she truly is just bad but instead of trying to be better she gave into her darkness....and that's ART.. And that's what makes it genius and beautiful! I disagree with alot of what you dislike. I thought so much wasn't meant to be taken serious, and I felt like there was never a "will they won't they" with patty and Bob but just a weird obsessive crush and Bob pushing her off, the "conscious un-throple-ing is one of the best scenes." I loved they brought up the 3somes and how Bob ended up being on the back burner. I thought it was all perfect and just ughhhhhh SUCH A GOOD SHOW
Agressively agree!! I am so tired of people dissing on the show wanting patty to be 'good' but that's not the point at all! It's the opposite! And it's fun
The reason wasn’t people being OVERLY sensitive, it was bc there were MANY problematic moments that people just couldn’t look past. I mean Christ, I’m trans and there was a transphobic joke within the first minute lol 😂 I literally paused it and sat there thinking, do I really want to keep watching this shit. But I’m glad I did bc it was a really enjoyable show to watch. The soap opera style was brilliant and left me so excited to watch the next episode. Pacing was incredible. The show being overt with themes and stories were great, really set it apart. If you just take out those problematic moments that were completely unnecessary then you have a really really interesting show. But unlike me, most people didn’t get past the trailer or first few episodes, and who can blame them. I can’t believe I did keep watching tbh lol 😂 the trailer was deliberately done to seem like getting thin makes you’re life better and now she can get revenge to set up to show to reveal something else. Which, I get you want to surprise your audience, but you’re deliberately making it seem like you’re promoting that and then shocked when people are outraged about it. Overall with a better writer just checking over the scripts for BS and a better PR team, this could’ve been an incredible show.
as someone with eating disorders, specifically binge eating/bulimia, i remember how deep this show hit for me. i had watched movies and shows about the topic before, but nothing felt as real to me as patty’s struggle, and i got really bad anxiety for it for a couple of days. but i loved it for it
i adored this show. patty very obviously has bpd and knowing that going into the show made me look at it so differently. to most people, her relationships with the other characters might have seemed jumpy and unpredictable, but they did that on purpose.
I remember seeing the binge scene with her cake and initially thinking, "oh come on grabbing the cake like that? Isn't that a little too..." but then I stopped myself, because literally a few weeks before watching that episode I remembered that I had a breakdown and was grabbing a rice dish and stuffing it into my face exactly just like that. I had anorexia growing up and those feelings or impulses don't always completely go away. You almost want to hurt yourself, you want to feel something else than the overwhelming hurt. I definitely understand where some of the criticism comes from but when this show hits, it hits hard. I don't particularly like the "ending" but tbh if they had another season they probably would have flip flopped on it let's be honest 🤷🏽♂️
everyone shits on the weight loss aspect of this, but i binged this ENTIRE show because… when I lost weight, life got easier. It made me realize how MEAN people were to me when I was fat. Which then caused it’s own issues, but I feel like no one talks about that? I never thought I was bullied, but when I became conventionally attractive, people opened up to me easily, respected me without me needing to earn it, held doors for me and made eye contact with me. It isn’t a good feeling when you discover that the world you knew before secretly HATED you just for existing while fat. The show isn’t flawless, but this part of it was relatable for me because I understand her rage following weight loss.
I honestly loved the fact that a key theme to this show was binge eating disorder, which has way less representation in the media. There are some things I thought they did really well and some that I wish they hadn't done, but the representation is good and accurate for the most part. I feel like often in media and just in society, other ED's like anorexia are portrayed almost as the "prettier" disorder, with much less blame on the person with an ED. Whereas binge eating disorder is mainly portrayed in jokes and in a really negative light reflecting the person struggling with it. We need to get rid of the notion that one disorder is favorable over another, or that one makes you sicker than the other, which I feel Insatiable did a wonderful job at doing.
Really small point probably, but I also liked the Capoeira-Element. Often enough, that isn't taken seriously as a martial art, people saying "oh it's just kinda dancing, really" but just because it has a music element doesn't mean it isn't a martial art. And I liked that she used it to successfully defend against the intruders.
I loved this show! It was interesting to see her still struggling with her image and self esteem after loosing the weight because that is real. Her treatment also how it changed when she was fat and when she was skinny and how when she was skinny the focus changed, suddenly it was all about hot she was which for me represents society. This show had a lot of potential and I wish they would have been confident in giving this show a chance and stuck to their guts but listened to the critique and making it better.
thank you for your analysis, I wondered why I didn’t see the show coming back. personally, I really liked it. I was watching it in the middle of my own ED recovery and there were days when I couldn’t watch it, because it infuriated me so much. it was too real. other days I enjoyed it and laughed at how ridiculous it was. my point is that having watched most Ed related shows this was the most truest and to the point. when you have binge eating disorder it’s not like ana, it’s about anger, resentment, rage even, self-righteousness, egoism, vanity and self-hatred, because you yourself don’t meet those standards in your head. this is exactly how you feel and they portrayed it in Patty brilliantly. also I loved when she learned what her disorder was and that realisation touched me, I’ve never seen that on tv before. I had similar experience, the relieve to know there were others like me. what I’d like to see in the end is the resolution, the answer to her problems. she joined 12 steps, but honestly, writers don’t know anything about the program, I was upset seeing it misrepresented. I recovered because I did the work it required, I’d love to see that in a tv character some day. not the one who is still struggling, going to the meetings every now and then and still blaming it on others, but the one who took full responsibility for their life, did the work and fully recovered. that would’ve been amazing.
The shows not for everyone .. If u don't enjoy dark / unusual humor ur not gonna like it.. Most ppl have a very basic sense of humor thats y rom com's r a big thing.. I used to watch rom com's for the comedy and I don't find anything funny throughout.. I wld recommend Borat, the dictator, the interview, scream Queens , not another teen movie, scary movie franchise.. If u r into dark comedy..
I also loved the show and connected a lot. Dark, dry, uncaanny humor is definitely my thing and you can tell it's made by a person with trauma tbh. The advertising was it's biggest issue! I didn't watch until S2 was announced and was like "why'd no one tell me there was murder in this show???" also punching over the candy bar is a very normal reaction from anyone with an ED on top of the emotional shit she'd just gone through! Even anoretics, we value the food we have. Some have secret stashes of candies and sweets they "can't" eat and interfering with a safe or cheat food, whether they were gonna eat it or not, can cause irrational anger responses.
I LOVE all the points you hit on this show and couldn’t agree more! I was a little hesitant on what stance you might take because I secretly enjoyed it quite a lot, despite the problems it had. I think the show was really captivating and very fun. It had me laughing at many points and rooting for certain people (especially the Bobs being together, hate that they split up, my head canon says they got back together). Also I couldn’t agree more with the whole “take my new body for a spin” thing and why it’s wrong. I’m a thick guy (in the LGBTQIA+ community where there’s unfortunately a LOT of fat-shaming and expectation to be fit, muscular or thin) and while I do face rejection like anyone else, there are LOTS of people who really like me just as I am. There are LOTS of fish in the sea and they all want different things, people can find someone if they put themselves out there, it’s all about attitude and not letting the rude people and rejections get you down.
I really enjoeyd this show. I've never seen something coming, because everything was just so ridicolous lmao. Also I absolutely LOVED that they included binge eating. That were the moments I connected the most with Patty...
I liked some parts off the show . As an overweight woman I can relate Patty. But I found it a bit unbelievable that she could have lost so much weight after she got hurt by the robber. Otherwise I liked the model storyline and I was interesting to see that even if she was thinner doesn’t mean she became happier. I didn’t like the crazy murder storylines. I thought it was better without it.
This show seems to have only been made to be controversial. Their handling of topics such as obesity, molestation and bisexuality was tone deaf at best, and offensive at worst. The only likeable characters were Nonnie, her father and possibly Bob Armstrong's wife. Thanks for sharing your honest opinion of this show.
I guess dark humor isn’t for everyone, but as a fan of it, I really enjoyed this show. It’s so unhinged it was extremely entertaining for me. And the characters struggles with binge eating disorder were surprisingly realistic and refreshing and hit a little too close to home at times. Lol
one time bob offhandedly said (after patty was blaming her problems on something else) “borderline personality disorder could explain a lot of your traits” and that i feel like answers a lot of ur questions. she’s an over the top character about a girl w bpd bc of her abondoment issues and rejection in school that isn’t being treated and is around alot of toxic role models
I loved this show. This makes me want to rewatch it. I think it’s okay for a show to be trashy and meaningless and satirical for entertainment. I like watching a light show occasionally. I’m so upset they’re not making new seasons :(
Hi, plus size girl here! I absolutely love the show, don't get me wrong it's not perfect but nothing is. I think it does a good job of showing that losing weight won't fix your problems. To me it was pretty clear from early on that Patty is the villain of the show, yes she's the main character but I don't think we really are meant to root for her. I like the dark humor and the satire and I think a lot of people just don't like that humor or took the show too serious. Others just saw the trailer and ran with it without giving the show a chance. The amount of people I've seen hate on the show without actually having watched it is ridiculous. I watched both seasons twice and while the second season is definitely worse than the first one, I like them both but I also absolutely adore Debby Ryan so... maybe that plays into it.
I've always felt very alone in my love for Insatiable. Its representation of binge eating disorder was the most relatable I've ever seen, which is funny considering it is a super over the top, campy show
I agree with the being skinny doesn't Automatically make you likeable because I experienced that. I used to get picked on by the Alison dilaurentis characters of the world I also have a binge eating disorder where I used to eat half of the refrigerator even though I wasn't hungry and later on I'd feel depressed and pathetic but my brother helped me through that
When I watched this show I saw the portrayal of my struggles for the first time. I've never seen anyone feeling what I feel, especially scenes about ed. In a way this show helped me with my issues because I realized I am not the only one who has ed.
FINALLY someone who shares my thoughts and isn't so harshly critical of this show. People really dismiss the good parts of the show. I found there to be more good parts than bad, at least in season 1. I really hated the direction the writers went into in season 2, but I didn't understand why people weren't talking about the internal conflict which is the most important part of a show and the writers (and cast and crew) of this show really got the audience to be invested in the characters. I personally experienced Patty to be annoyingly selfish or self involved and she was extremely impulsive when she felt abandoned, but I felt like that was part of her character and sometimes she had a reason for it (not to justify it completely) and as you were saying, some parts people called problematic and made out to be really bad parts weren't (that) bad, while there were some bad parts, but they were different than the ones everyone talks and got so hung up about. I really love the show and really hated what they did to Patty's character development. It felt like it wasn't the right fit for the story they were telling. I felt like they just randomly threw out the previous direction her character arc was going in and decided to make her a killer, enjoy killing and give her a bad character arc (and a really bad one, out of sudden.) So I do agree that a lot of twists and turns in season 2 were ridiculous, annoying, bad and didn't make sense. But what so many people ignore and don't seem to get is characters are flawed, but a lot of those flaws are part of their character arc and actually those flaws made me love these characters, because they are realisticly portrayed because they are people with these flaws who have to go on a journey first to learn their falsely beliefs and flaws to become better, less selfish, people pleaser (or rather Patty pleaser) or better people not focused on the wrong things (Coralee that cares too much about her reputation for example). I'm glad I found this video, because I was thinking ''why does nobody understand that those parts they call ''problematic'' are intentional,'' and I was starting to question myself for a bit. But hearing you say the same thing, I know that I wasn't the only one who got the dark humour. I mean, I'm autistic and even I aren't so quick to call things insensitive, eventhough I'm a really specific critical person, especially of shows and series. I'm picky and when it comes to stories, as a writer myself, I want good quality and as someone who thinks way too much about ethics, I am quick to see and adress a problem. So yeah I've learned that people don't get dark humour and want to call it problematic, because these days were all very sensitive and are quick to call things insensitive which results in sometimes or a lot of times people who judge a book by its cover, calling the wrong things insensitive and people don't get that flawed characters are intentional. But let me adress this: the point of characters is giving them flaws and setting them on a journey. When a character has a bad character arc they don't change and it's intentional, because the writers are telling a story through this character and them not changing is intentional to send out a message and tell a certain story.
I'm so sad when people are too critical about show (ofc i'm aware it has many disadvantages) or judge it by a trailer :( Not only because it's my comfort one and i enjoyed it but also it really heped me with my binge eating disorder and put me on a recovery track. These words that dee's said ,,i dont have a food problem i have a life problem'' helped me more than my therapist beacuse i started realising under what circumstances i overeat 💕 Btw i'm impressed by the way you speak it's so fluent, intelligent and brilliant! It seems like you say it all with no cuts so wow def wanna check out some of your new videos
Honestly its one of my fav shows to this day. It was different. Abstract but also real in both scary and beautiful. Like a mirror of the crazy consequences we would face if we would always made the wrong, selfish and impulsive choices. It was always super funny and Debby Rayn performance proved to everyone that she is an amazing actress. I just enjoyed watching It and when I did, It felt like I could just be a part of that world where dark and good choices have equally bad or good consequenses...if that makes sense. Anywhoooo I loved It. It was different from everything I saw to that point when I watched It years ago. I wish they would get a season 3.
in season 2 Magnolia's episode about being at Hughes and trying to recover her memory whilst talking about her mixed race identity and feeling isolated was really touching. there is room for improvement but that theme was much better handled than the other themes in the show
My favorite thing about this show is that none of the characters are really good people they are all flawed from one extent to another and they bounce back and fourth really well. I liked how in Patty and Nonnie's friendship they were both self absorbed in different ways, Patty only thinks about herself and her own feelings so shes frequently bulldozing over her friend, Nonnie is always following patty like a dog with a bone but never stands up to her and has a preconstructed image of patty in her head that often blinds her to the point that Patty could commit murder right under her nose. I was really excited to see where they're friendship would end up because I felt like they were going in the direction of nonnie uncovering and exposing Patty's crime spree. Maybe she could expose Regina as well which would exonerate bob and then Patty and Bob wouldve gone on the run together. Bobs kit and kaboodle for disguises c'mon why'd this show get cancelled)))))))))))))):
I freaking loved this show. Yeah, I suppose people who think the show is offensive don’t understand the humor, the dark humor, and the way the show is meant to be. I felt so upset when the show was canceled. I’m just glad to know that some people actually enjoyed it. 💖
The show was great. I am sad for its cancellation, but I am twice as sad that modern society is getting so dumb it cannot apply the simplest logic - learn from bad examples. This is ancient trope and nowadays you cannot get a story right unless it is downgraded to basic level of correctness. Stuff should presented in clear BLEAK and white , otherwise it gets cancelled. Since when humans lost their critical, analytical take on entertainment? Removing everything that challenges you to think and analyze won't remove all these ''bad'' stuff from the real world
I remember a lot of the backlash from this show and i never watched it. Now, i've seen a lot of people talk about how they actually liked it. (this is my comment before watching the video)
Insatiable is the female version of You. They are both done in this unique, Lolita style where you get to experience the plot through the main characters’ eyes and hear their justifications for the insane and evil things they do. Unfortunately, Insatiable wasn’t done as well as You is. It’s really hard to have in unlikable main character in a story. Once the audience doesn’t like the main character, they no longer have someone to root for or someone they care about, and it all falls apart. In this style of having a villain as the main character and getting to hear their justifications and feelings through narration, you are able to pull off having an unlikable main character. But it can be very tricky to keep the audience on their side. I think insatiable started off strong, and on paper, It seems like a really great show. But by season two it all just started falling apart. I watched the show so long ago, I can’t pinpoint the exact reason why I stopped liking it. But I do remember that in season two I stopped liking the main character and couldn’t continue to go along with her justifications for doing all that fucked up shit. This style of story is definitely a slippery slope, and You Is definitely the better version
insatiable is one of my favorite shows and I’ll probably never get over the fact that it got cancelled when it was actually pretty popular :‘) i would have liked to know how it would have gone on, because Patty obviously wasn’t healed at the end when she realized she ’likes’ killing since it didn’t really make sense because she already had an ED before she became a killer, imo she was probably more addicted to ’justice’? Lauren Gussis herself said that the show would end when Patty gets healed and I guess a big step towards that would have been her finally taking accountability for some of the things she did. I don’t think the ending is that bad and the cliffhanger of S1 would have been way worse as a finale, I was still rlly frustrated when it got cancelled tho obviously. But who knows, maybe it’s gonna get saved some day or there will be some kind of reboot (even tho it’s probably unlikeable but I won’t give up hope lol)
Yeah agreed. The whole thrupple thing then the people who supposedly loved Bob run off together... It was just weird. You did better than me as I couldn't watch it till the end.
I watched this show with my at-the-time girlfriend when it came out on Netflix in 2018. I think there were two seasons, then, though I'm not sure. I'm always interested to hear your thoughts, especially because your opinions are very well thought-out; you include the context, the framing, the writing, and even the clothing choices into your analyses of scenes, and I deeply appreciate your thoroughness. It seems like you always have something insightful to add on a topic. No matter how many videos I've watched on this exact show, for example- and I do remember watching a lot around the time I finished what was on Netflix- your videos always offer something unique. In fact, I especially enjoy how much nuance you present, since most people had a very blanket, black-and-white opinion (that it was awful, generally). It's been a good few years since I've watched it, but I thought I might talk about the opinions that have stayed with me as they relate to your video. I was a child who was bullied for my weight, both by school children and my own parents. Your opinion on how the show presented this is absolutely fair, regardless of whether or not you experienced that exact thing. I'm a writer, and to develop my writing skills, I learned to ask myself this question: "How would I describe (x) to someone who has never observed it before?" - and that applies to scenarios and plot and themes as much as specific objects. I agree with you that "Insatiable" doesn't do much to explain Patty's long-term struggle with bullying, it doesn't give us a good "before" picture to use as a lens to analyze her behavior through, yet there are a lot of shenanigans that...at least, I got the idea we were supposed to understand or excuse presumably because she "used to be bullied." However, I can say that there may be some catharsis to watching the victim of bullying go out and get revenge; revenge fantasies can be a morbid sort of comfort to a person who has no real power over a situation. It may seem counter-intuitive, but these fantasies are normal and even healthy- to a point. They're almost a way to vent, a way to create a scenario in which you have control over a situation you realistically do not. I can't honestly remember if I found a lot to relate to her on this, though I think her "revenge" motif was always kind of flimsy and clumsily portrayed (like, she seemed to be getting revenge on a lot of people who didn't seem to do anything to her in thw first place), and I think they ended up going just a little too far with the "dark comedy" aspect of the show. It muddied the tone so much that it became hard to relate to the characters because, at the moments their trauma should have been the forefront of a scene, they focused too much on trying to make it funny and not enough on trying to get us feel her pain. Trying to portray dark comedy in a plot like this would take a level of genius to tread the line exactly right, and in many people's viewing experience, they didn't succeed. I also have a lot of respect for the fact that they tried. Unfortunately, I felt like the show-runners picked the worst stereotypes about stigmatized people and identities, and then made all of those traits the characters' entire identity. Patty may no longer be "plus sized," but she still has all the worst qualities we assume about fat people as a society. She's selfish and impulsive, and lacks self-control. And while I appreciate that this show tried to take a different turn with it, because I know this issue with representation needs more stories where weight loss isn't the cure all, the problems they gave her were very stereotyped. I also wasn't a big fan of them bringing up the diagnosis of BPD in the way they did. BPD is already a highly stigmatized disorder, so if you're going to include it in a story, you really need to take the time to humanize that character and make the audience relate to their struggles, and the way they brought it up as if it was the real reason and this is just how we can expect a Borderline to be didn't do anything for the many people struggling to accept their diagnosis and/or get help. That might just be one person's opinion. While I'm on the topic though, I want to point out that BPD is a treatable condition for those who have access to treatment, and nowadays it actually has a very good prognosis. It is a chronic, lifelong condition that is often connected to trauma, and it cannot be cured, but people with BPD are not destined to be toxic relationship partners or abusive or anything. Beauty pageant Bob is bisexual, and he can't choose. Bob Barnard is actually a very interesting character because his sexual orientation doesn't fit into a neat label; he's sexually attracted to men and women, but as he says, he's "gay, emotionally." I took that to be his way of explaining that he's homo-romantic. Bisexual and homo-romantic. I also really loved the throuple scene, although it was also horrible representation of poly people because it was started as an affair (if I remember correctly). Then, there's Lily, who takes on the role of "predatory lesbian" and constantly seems to be making immature and uncomfortable comments at Patty- so much, in fact, that I didn't find it believable that Lily was even questioning her sexuality. It seemed like she was super sure of what she was going for.
I love this show, and even though I understand how it can be offensive to some people, I think we can get pass said offensivness and recognize that, at least to some, it was extremely entertaining. Insatiable was bold, deciding to be as problematic as it was in a, sometimes, quite delicate american society, and I believe that boldness should be respected.
as a person who was bullied over the weight problems, i kinda feel related to Patty and when you are being excluded some crazy thoughts really come into your mind (a lot of bullied people become bullies themselves). and ED problems are so realistic in this show also. so it not as bad as it may seems. but the show, like most comedies do, really exaggerate the reality
I loved the show. I wish they had gone on to explore more about who she is and what her motivation actually is. And maybe exploring how being abandoned by her family may have affected her and possibly caused a personality disorder, but her fall from being a sympathetic Character to being the villain of her own show was really interesting and i did love their depiction of binge eating disorder because i almost never see it talked about. Most people hear eating disorder and picture gorgeous women tragically kneeling over a toilet or starving themseves and never really go into what it actually is and how it affects you especially with BED and it was just so good to see it and them really taking it seriously while not feeling the need to be serious all the time.
I really liked this show. It is meant to be campy. The subject matter when delivered with the campy style is more entertaining to watch. Camp is absurdly exaggerated, and I enjoyed this aspect of the show. I wish it had a season 3. Also, thank you for making a great video about this show. Even if I don't 100% agree with you, I like how you make your point and your video is very well thought out. I'm gonna hit that subscribe button and give you a like. Stay safe and well.
My favorite show. I know it’s silly but it reminded me of Mother! at the end, I was so anxious, like I was Patty. Idk if it was the director or Debby Ryan but it felt so chaotic it was truly magical.
To me I think 🤔 the best shows has problematic and “bad” characters Glee- Rachel berry PLL- Alison and Aria and -A One tree hill- Lucus and Dan The vampire diaries- Elena Legacies- Lizzie Notice how in these shows some they have a redemption arc even if we don’t like 👍🏽 them but they do drive the story a more and without the show wouldn’t be as good 👍🏽
I would have loved to see a third season. The characters were extremely flawed but I loved that the show explored that, even if it made missteps. I haven't seen a show that explored the kind of rage you can experience when you're overweight and when you're bullied. Not everyone's experience is the same, but it captured something quite emotionally acute, and I wanted to see where it ended up in the third season.
In my opinion it could have been intentional that the show was not showing her struggle with her body image or generally her personality when she was fat and the show starting when she lost weight. It is a depiction of society, that you are worth being focused on only when you are skinny. I think thats the case for a lot of things in the show that a lot of situations are depicted through the lens of society, so a lot of people thought it was the show being fatphobic when in reality we as a society are and the show is just reflecting that back at us.
I have seen show in the past that have done so much worse and ppl have not really complain about it. But because this show came out in what 2018 or 2019 people are really sensitive And would complain about it
Great video, as usual! You made some really solid points! I'm curious what you would have to say about Dear Evan Hansen? A lot of people absolutely hate that new movie (and the original stage show, tbh) and I wonder what you would have to say about it (:
10:34 I think the big one was because she decide to not be with him, but she was high (cause Magnolia) and she find C really hot, and she followed that, but totally waked up, she didn't choose him.
Also If you think of names such as Harden or Padgette or Calypso Brick doesn't sound that bad especially since it is a common name in Dallas,Ireland,Georgia, and England Besides there's also Heather Kristina Pamela kendall Jackson johnson
it's the "really weird murderer that's problematic" troupe but from opposite sids. one shows the murderer, and one shows the victims. i have a head cannon where they take place in the same universe where everyone is expected to act like they do in the show.. like cartoons in real life almost
As a SA and ED survivor battling depression, bullying, un-aliving thoughts and anxiety, I feel SO SEEN and Understood by #Insatiable #Netflix #BringBackInsatiable The only ones hating are the ones probably inflicting all this trauma on people! The way the show depicts respect, consent, trauma, anger, rage, unfairness, etc.. It really helped me deal with my stuff a lil bit better. Not all main characters are wholesome saints, just because you're broken doesn't mean you don't deserve to live, try and heal. She's actually DEALING with her stuff in albeit an exaggerated, over the top way - recovery is never at a single wave of a wand! This dark comedy helped me laugh at my own dark past and take those things a bit lightly, it eases the burden. I NEED S3. @netflix !
To be fair, false accusations do happen, and when they do, lives (and at the very least relationships) are destroyed. My cousin accused my grandfather of something horrible like that. She was going through a lot mentally at the time. Years later, she apologized to grandmother for falsely accusing him (unfortunately after he had passed). There's a whole branch of family that I never really knew because everything was so awkward, even after she apologized. There are also behaviors that you need to look out for when it comes to these things. Usually, when someone guilty has been accused, weird behaviors they have start to make sense. Trying to be alone with the victim, too much touching that can seem fairly innocent at the time, preferential treatment, etc. Because of all of that, I'm not one to simply believe someone when accusations occur, especially when behaviors like that from the accused are completely absent. That's one of the things I liked about the show. They portrayed (fairly mildly) what can happen to innocents when they're accused of something like that.
I liked that Patty kept doing the same mistakes over and over again and eventually got even worse than she was in the beginning. Simply because we have seen the main character doing it the other way around too many times. For me at least. The main characters usually develop positively but seeing it upside down, being constantly annoyed with Patty and the unsettling ending made me think a lot about the mistakes I keep on doing over and over again. Or rather it motivated me to learn how to do better because the show reminds us what our own worst outcomes could be. Like reverse inspiration or something like that. 😂 I think a lot of people would have something to lean from this show but maybe that’s why so many people didn’t like it...it’s not easy to see and recognise the most toxic parts of yourself 😏
I think Insatiable is one of the rare cases where a show is simultaneously extremely underrated and still not a really good show. The writing (though it has some really good parts) is kind of stupid, just like you argued. That being said I absolutely love this show. Not every show needs to be (quote unquote) good to be enjoyable. Insatiable is just dumb fun.
I haven’t seen the show but if it doesn’t challenge her negative thoughts and actions about her body then that is just triggering so people with EDs like myself can’t watch it or it will hurt them meaning it’s just for people who don’t have them
I really liked the show overall but I agree that a lot of the times it wasn't clear what stance and message it was trying to send. If you take a satire dark humor approach the most important thing is having a clear stance and direction. It could have been really amazing.
In my opinion, comedies are funniest when the characters are either: unlikable and problematic, or really naive and innocent. These kinds of people can get themselves into more ridiculous situations
Facts
One of the things I liked about this show is that becoming skinny doesn't magically make Patty nastier, she was always a terrible selfish person.
One of the things I hate most about this show is that it implies everyone who struggles with their weight is just naturally a bad person. It’s fat phobic…
@@unionunicorn6776 how? Other over weight characters aren't mean or bad
@@unionunicorn6776 not really. There were characters that struggled with their weight and were bad people. There were people who didn't struggle with their weight and were bad people. The whole show is about HORRIBLE PEOPLE! You're just throwing the word around...

Honestly i loved this show. It was so atypical and patty was such an interesting protagonist it was a lot of fun to follow her
she was a mixed character which I loved, it is so interesting to watch a protagonist with antiquated values.
I agree
I watch a lot of true crime so to me it makes sense with how she acts and how she ends up. Some people really do act that insane. I think her character made me tap into my true crime mind to think of a mentally ill future serial killer rather then a normal teenager
Same actually. I enjoyed it
I have always felt that the main character in a movie doesn't have to be "the good guy" they just need to be interesting and like you already said patty was interesting
I never realized before but Insatiable is actually pretty similar to "YOU":
The narration, the killing, the not actually wanting to kill but always getting caught up in this kind of situation...
Only difference being that YOU doesn't have as much comedic elements
Wow never thought about that but you are so right
Great thought! Now that you mention, I absolutely see it.
What do you mean? You came out before Insatiable
@@gingerkatherina Whoa no need to get so angry over an honest mistake. Yeah I see now that they premiered less than a month apart and Insatiable was indeed first… My bad lol
@@gingerkatherina That was incredibly rude, and YOU was a book series that came out in 2014, so your comment still isn’t accurate.
i wasn’t sure if i would when the video started, but i SO agree with you. i think the show had a lot more potential than people give it credit for, but that the writers weren’t confident enough to make it good. it’s less offensive than it seemed in some ways and moreso in others, and overall, is a fascinatingly mixed bag.
The show was good it was funny people just think too deep into things
I love this show. So sad, that it got cancelled, I wanna know who it continues :(
Brick practicing the kissing with fruit, I died laughing.
Same 😂
noo i cant believe they cancelled it:( i loved this show i relate to patty so much and it was nice to have representation for binge eating disorder
exactly, as someone who got body shamed a lot this show is actually so comforting. and not in the sense that patty gets skinny noooo but in the sense that it’s acc a problem and that it’s other ppl that are ignorant and u shouldn’t feel bad about urself and also what body shaming can do to someone
Watch My Mad Fat Diary, it’s much, much better
@@ilovesuperjunior13 ^^yess my mad fat diary is so good & underrated
Personally I think her attraction to Christian made more sense than her attraction to Brick. I felt like the show was depicting Patty as like a budding psychopath so although Brick was a guy she had lusted over for so long she would quickly lose interest in him because hes just a normal dude and Patty craves chaos on repeat so it made more sense to me for her to go for the guy that is dark and mysterious and wants to run away with her. I loved the relationship between her and bob exactly because they were equally as toxic and they brought out the absolute worst and best in each other, they put each other in the most chaotic situations but at the end of the day there was so much unconditional love in the bond that those two crazies formed n im here for it
Just love listening to you talk honestly- something about it is so satisfying and therapeutic. excited for this !
Thankyou angel 😭
its incredibly annoying when people say that her obsession with food is like a negative fat stereotype but it was never because she was fat.
Is season 3 coming3?
@@terabaap3437 they cancelled the show :(
@@WhiteOreoCookiez 😭😭😭they do same with daybreak web series
@@WhiteOreoCookiez 😭i want to see how patty would take revenge from tgat bitch.. But now i can only imagine
I thought overall the show was hilarious and I wish there was a season 3.
i would love too see you analyse Scream Queens, Season One was so much fun to watch (Season Two kinda flopped though).
I absolutely loved season 1 so did my mom ❤❤
Omg yes I never laughed so hard at a TV show as I did at Scream Queens
Loved season 1 but couldn’t finish season 2 ep 1 Ryan Murphy lost his touch.
I really liked the show, because i never took it seriously. It was just a fun and wild ride for me haha
Which is why I love your channel so much!!😍
Thankyou this is such a sweet comment!
I thought it was all perfect and just ughhhhhh SUCH A GOOD SHOW
EXACTLY!! The tag line for the show is "This is a Coming of Rage Story" after all. Patty was always meant to be the super villian of her own life
Agressively agree!!
😡 Over two years later and I STILL am upset that NetFlix cancelled it-and on a cliffhanger!
💯 It was such a great dark comedy!
as someone with eating disorders, specifically binge eating/bulimia, i remember how deep this show hit for me. i had watched movies and shows about the topic before, but nothing felt as real to me as patty’s struggle, and i got really bad anxiety for it for a couple of days. but i loved it for it
i adored this show. patty very obviously has bpd and knowing that going into the show made me look at it so differently. to most people, her relationships with the other characters might have seemed jumpy and unpredictable, but they did that on purpose.
Bipolar or borderline?
@@idk-uv7mt borderline
Watching this show I also thought she has bpd. It explains a lot of her behavior, the impulsiveness, the acting out when she feels abandoned.
I loved this show I hate that it was cancelled.
I didn't watch until S2 was announced and was like "why'd no one tell me there was murder in this show???"
also punching over the candy bar is a very normal reaction from anyone with an ED on top of the emotional shit she'd just gone through!
I feel like the tone of Insatiable sounds like Scream Queens
pretty much, but insatiable was messier
@@aathenaiz6151 exactly
I love how the comment above this is saying the opposite
All shows don’t need to be the same. I enjoyed it and many others
That's kinda why I like it though 😂😂
I liked that everyone was a bad person.
I’m so upset they’re not making new seasons :(
I was waiting for this!!!!! Thank you for making this video. Watched the whole thing and agree with everything you’re saying. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I used to get picked on by the Alison dilaurentis characters of the world
I also have a binge eating disorder where I used to eat half of the refrigerator even though I wasn't hungry and later on I'd feel depressed and pathetic but my brother helped me through that
I know nothing about this show but I love when you tell us what you love (or loathe) about something :D thanks for the video
Holy shit I didn't need that many words 😂
I luv that u put so much time and effort in for us, us amazing
I love doing this for you guys 🥰
I'm so sad when people are too critical about show (ofc i'm aware it has many disadvantages) or judge it by a trailer :( Not only because it's my comfort one and i enjoyed it but also it really heped me with my binge eating disorder and put me on a recovery track. These words that dee's said ,,i dont have a food problem i have a life problem'' helped me more than my therapist beacuse i started realising under what circumstances i overeat 💕
Btw i'm impressed by the way you speak it's so fluent, intelligent and brilliant! It seems like you say it all with no cuts so wow def wanna check out some of your new videos
Okay but this show was also very hilarious. I really loved Bob’s (Armstrong) character
It's all fine and good to have unlikable main characters, but you have to write in actual character development for them.
in season 2 Magnolia's episode about being at Hughes and trying to recover her memory whilst talking about her mixed race identity and feeling isolated was really touching. there is room for improvement but that theme was much better handled than the other themes in the show
With a few tweaks, Insatiable could have seriously been a cult classic!
It might be in the future scream queens wasn’t appreciated when it came out and now people love it
Love your videos! Can't wait to hear what you have to say! 🥰
I might have some controversial opinions on this one 🤩
Side note: more people have birthday roasts than you think
The show was great. I am sad for its cancellation, but I am twice as sad that modern society is getting so dumb it cannot apply the simplest logic - learn from bad examples. This is ancient trope and nowadays you cannot get a story right unless it is downgraded to basic level of correctness. Stuff should presented in clear BLEAK and white , otherwise it gets cancelled. Since when humans lost their critical, analytical take on entertainment? Removing everything that challenges you to think and analyze won't remove all these ''bad'' stuff from the real world
as someone who loved insatiable despite also knowing it was totally batshit, i am very excited about this video
I remember a lot of the backlash from this show and i never watched it. Now, i've seen a lot of people talk about how they actually liked it. (this is my comment before watching the video)
I have rewatched Insatiable so many times, it is by far the most hilarious show I have ever watched.
Got my tea. I'm ready for this!
I always play your deep dives in the background thank you sooo much for all this content ((:
no problem at all
insatiable is one of my favorite shows and I’ll probably never get over the fact that it got cancelled when it was actually pretty popular :‘)
i would have liked to know how it would have gone on, because Patty obviously wasn’t healed at the end when she realized she ’likes’ killing since it didn’t really make sense because she already had an ED before she became a killer, imo she was probably more addicted to ’justice’? Lauren Gussis herself said that the show would end when Patty gets healed and I guess a big step towards that would have been her finally taking accountability for some of the things she did. I don’t think the ending is that bad and the cliffhanger of S1 would have been way worse as a finale, I was still rlly frustrated when it got cancelled tho obviously. But who knows, maybe it’s gonna get saved some day or there will be some kind of reboot (even tho it’s probably unlikeable but I won’t give up hope lol)
Watched the whole thing! Love ur channelll
Yeah agreed. The whole thrupple thing then the people who supposedly loved Bob run off together... It was just weird. You did better than me as I couldn't watch it till the end.
I only watched one episode and I stopped because Debbies acting is the same as in Jessie from Disney
To me I think 🤔 the best shows has problematic and “bad” characters
Glee- Rachel berry
PLL- Alison and Aria and -A
One tree hill- Lucus and Dan
The vampire diaries- Elena
Legacies- Lizzie
Notice how in these shows some they have a redemption arc even if we don’t like 👍🏽 them but they do drive the story a more and without the show wouldn’t be as good 👍🏽
I would have loved to see a third season.
But because this show came out in what 2018 or 2019 people are really sensitive And would complain about it
I also feel bad for Debby Ryan because I read something she got hate just for doing a role
Loooove your channel and all your videos! :) and I couldn't agree more with this one! :)
Also If you think of names such as Harden or Padgette or Calypso
Brick doesn't sound that bad especially since it is a common name in Dallas,Ireland,Georgia, and England
Besides there's also Heather Kristina Pamela kendall Jackson johnson
Whaaaaaaaa that's her name
@@NEZUKO-tz8gg yup
I've been saying that this show is going to grow a cult following. Just like Scream Queens was not appreciated when it came out
it's the "really weird murderer that's problematic" troupe but from opposite sids. one shows the murderer, and one shows the victims. i have a head cannon where they take place in the same universe where everyone is expected to act like they do in the show.. like cartoons in real life almost
I didn't mind this show. As you've said, it's a mixed bag, but I thought it was a fun ride.
I NEED S3. @netflix !
Didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed. Made sure to fix that ❤️
awww so glad to have you here!
That goes for all the other characters as well since we all have different toxic sides and the character portrayed a lot of them.
I really enjoyed it as did my boyfriend whom I forced to watch it with me :D. Your videos are fab.
Thanks Jack ♥️
