Most Boarding Schools in Nigeria are a mirror of our society, our government, and the people.
bullying in Nigeria is a common problem and the monsters you ignore become the demons that keep you awake at night.

I had to watch this with my sons. They were saying, "Mum, you have mentioned and discussed all these issues with us!"
It's absolutely important for parents to get into details about these topics and build trust between their children and themselves.
My deepest condolences to this family. May the Lord comfort them only through ways He does best!🙏🙏🙏

Lesson to all parent, if your child is complaining to you abt his challenges or you see any mark from your child try and visit the sch to know what happen. Not everything you will ignore, this generation is diff from ours. Let give them close monitor. Justice must prevail and those parent must face the panel. Teach ur child to be humble and honest. Don't teach them to be brutal and affect other child.

Bullying is a very bad thing. I was bullied in my JSS3 into fear and silence because I wanted to help this monster I thought was a schoolmate, he turned my help into a source of extortion and bully if I failed to comply giving him and his friends money. He gave me something he claimed to be boot and another guy came to steal that from me. This same guy who gave me the boot later got back behind me to take his boot back from the thief because they were friends but he chose to use the opportunity to extort me. He said the boot was expensive, that I can't afford buying a new one for him, instead, that I should bring money for him to go to spiritual houses to find out who actually stole the boot. This he was doing with his friends. He asked I should give him my watch if I don't have money to give him for the day, a wrist that my sister bought for me. I was afraid my family would know and that my father will come into the case. I believed my father was going to be mad at me for accepting to take into custody a boot from someone I didn't know that much. The bullies also made me believe that if I ever tell my family, that they will come and beat everyone in my family and pursue us all out of our home, I believed this and was afraid to tell any member of my family and rather went quiet and couldn't eat all these periods. My father saw my mood and kept asking me if I was alright, I always said yes but the man was not comfortable because I behaved like I was sick. One day, I came back home to ask for money again from my sister, the money I would give my bullies, then my sister was curious to know why I kept asking for money everyday, I refused to say, I said it was just for me to buy things during break time, but she was curious because I should not have finished the one giving to me, she pressed on, then I confided and told her, I told her not to tell father or tell anyone, else my bullies will come sack us all from our home, she jumped out on hearing that and went straight to daddy to tell him what I said. It was so dramatic. My father called me and asked me some questions, out of fear, I said everything to dad but dad didn't get mad but same time didn't tell me what he wanted to do. To cut the long story short. Dad solved the problem that same day and the main bully apologized. I can never ever forget that. That bully ate me up that I preferred to die rather to confess because I was so afraid and never wanted anything to happen to my family so I chose not to say a word to avoid my bullies touching my family. It may sound funny, but reading through that of Sylvester, I can tell you that this guy may have been passing through a lot but the bullies have managed to mute him and to make the matter worse, the school aided it because they should have noticed that he was being bullied through his countenance and social life.

Seeing what this child went through just breaks my heart.
To think that the parents of one of the child who joined in the killing of the boy had the guts to fly their own child out of the country when he killed another child.
Children really go through alot in boarding schools. From teachers, fellow students (junior, classmates and senior students most especially.
It’s not to say children don’t experience challenges in day-schools too but, that detachment from home and family really has implications (emotionally, psychologically, even sociologically) on the children, they don’t have anyone to talk to or confide in at that moment, and the children grow up dealing with the effects of those things they had experienced even after they have graduated from the school.

I have had a situation where I had to withdraw my daughter from a school because of verbal bullying. I am an educational psychologist and I have worked at a point with a boarding school for five years, I know the effect of bullying on the mental health of a child, Parents please lets always give listening hears to our children, bullying doesnt end with school mates, senior students. A house patron or matron can also bully a child, even teachers bully at times. Bullying comes in different shades and forms, lets be observant

And in case any of the 6 kids are in your church, pls tell them to bring their child/ren back to face the consequences so as to save the parents, pastor, and church from unnecessary prayers in future. God visits the iniquity from 1st to 4th. To the parents, present your kids for the consequences and save your generation. When you sow wind you'll reap whirlwind, when you give you'll receive, pressed down, shaken together and running over shall men give back to your bosom. @@ifehansson2254 personally this is the first am hearing about being forced to drink anything related to bullying in niaja, which puts this issue more in the realm of cult initiation gone wrong and let me remind you that bullying isnt just physical scars, its either physical or psychological of which kids abroad i.e,uk or usa alike suffer more psychological torment that physical. The institutions are good at hiding it over there, while in nigeria, weare good at sweeping things under the rug

Parents should give their children access to talk with them one on one
If the victim has spoken out earlier that he drank something maybe life would have been safe.
When Don Davies mum cried out about son's abused , some people thought she's blackmailing the school .

The era of boarding school for kids has gone. There is no reason to send a child to boarding school in today's Nigeria, when there are a lot of good schools around unless the parents are no more. I may sound harsh but the world of today is becoming more dangerous to leave children in the school environment. It's a pity that the family has to suffer this great lost. The school authority should be held responsible and those bullies should made to face full wrath of the law.

Parents need to learn how to create an inviting, positive atmosphere for a meaningful communication to take place between them and their children. Sylvester would have opened up in the past as to the severity of the bully and other things if he is so free to talk to his parents. Parents, your children need to see you as their best friends. There must be justice for this innocent kid.

This whole thing broke my heart. Parents need to be hands on in parenting. I pray this family get the justice they deserve. I pray the roommates Stand up and corroborate the story the family have said sylvester told them. I pray they name the culprits. it's the only way the case holds up in court. Those boys must atone for their sins.
And the school's licence should be revoked. How can a cult exist in a high school and the school is not aware. A HIGH SCHOOL?? but that's absolutely absurd. They have to business running a school if they cannot take responsibility for the lives of the children entrusted in they care. There is so much to say. Rest in peace little man. 💔💔

I attended one of the Unity Secondary Schools in Èkìtì State, Nigeria around the late 1990s.
Things like these was like 'normal'. We didn't even know it is called bullying, but we used the term 'brutality or brutalisation'.
As a student in the school, you are either a victim or an actor. Extremely few students would have escaped such experience. I was bullied, 'brutalised', and extorted. We took it as a normal boarding house experience.
In retrospect, did I 'brutalised' any Junior student? I must sincerely confess that though I didn't do so, but as a school prefect, we sometimes go to the extreme of punishing Junior students. I've apologised to as many of the Junior students that I later came across, because I'd learnt that we did perpetuate the circle of the misnormal and passed it on. Though, it was a culture in my secondary school, there shouldn't be any excuse for such.
    It is wrong. Periodt!

While i was in a boarding school, my dad made sure he befriended all the nuns for my follow up while in School. After school i need to tell him all my activities back at home. This was in the late 90s to 2000s. Even after his passing away, my mum did same. Fast forward to today, i sent my last sibling to a boarding school and last year she did mention her dislike for the school and immediately i interrogated her if she was facing bullying? Good enough it was far from that because i was ready to storm the school or withdraw her from there. RIP Sylvester. May your soul find peace with Christ and my condolence to the bereaved family.

What is going on in Nja? From
John Davis Jr. to Sylvester! The pain of the dad is palpable. Lost dreams , hopes of a caring parent. I cannot even fathom what the mother and grandparents are going through. I pray for the family to have peace, set up a foundation in his name to have purpose. He cannot die in vain! RIP Sylvester, justice must prevail. All those who conspired, perpetrated, or witnessed this evil deed without speaking up must face justice no matter how highly placed their families are in 🇳🇬 .

Adeola thanks for the update. I have been devastated since this incidence. You remember another girl in one of the private boarding school in Abuja that condoms were found in her private part? This girl was sick and died in the process.Till now there's no justice for the parent. The matter has been swept under the carpet. This is another heinous atrocity and I hope it will not be covered up as usual.
Hmmmm.there was a popular musician who sang " olowo nsore olowo, otosi nsore otosi," meaning the riches make friends with the riches while the poor befriend the poor.
Nowadays, the riches make enemy of themselves. I don't see why the riches will pay enormous amount of money for their children's school and yet the children will be causing havoc for other innocent children.
Too bad! May his soul rest in peace.

My problem is you see a student promising to treat other students the same way they were treated. Cycle of violence.
