I've ridden Sidis exclusively for many years, including a pair of Diablos. The whole point of the high ankle is to keep mud and rain out. Also, as an off road shoe, they aren't designed to be used with overshoes (they would cover the treads and soon get damaged climbing over fences etc) so I'm not surprised that you struggle to put overshoes on them. I will be buying a pair of Frosts soon, specifically to use in the cold and wet on my cyclo cross bike - without overshoes.

You assumption about gore-tex is wrong. Gore-tex and similar membranes are intended to repel liquid water from outside while allowing water vapor from inside. It's not meant to increase water vapor from inside. From vaporization point of view it's just another layer which makes vaporization slower. So the membrane vs non-membrane is like "more water repellent less vaporization" vs "less water repellent more vaporization".

I’ve just been using merino wool socks in my shoes when cold. Goretex stops your feet getting wet, it’s breathable waterproofing. Primaloft is what you want in a shoe as it’s a thermal insulation fabric etc.

Great info man. Thanks. For me it's the S - Phyre's. Foil around the toes (old school) and Sealskinz over shoes covers. No problems even down to -5° ✊🏽

I'm satisfied with warmer pads from Decathlon, which are stics on socks on fingers. I'm using summer spd shoes with 3mm neopren shoe covers and 3 hour ride in temperuteres around - 3°C are no problem.

Good video and some good comments - I ride road mtb and fat in UK and have sidi’s for both road and mtb we had a cold spell early December 0 degrees and I found my road shoes were still ok with a overshoe even a 0 but mtb - it’s bit slower wetter messier - I’d considered the frost but in the end was not convinced by the gortex - i wanted to see thinsulate or similar
I got a good deal on lake 304’s - they look huge in the pictures online but in reality not so much more bulky than the frost or similar mtb boots
Feet warm and snug - only downside - the tongue is not welted so of you were to stand in a puddle ankle deep for say 10 seconds or more - it would leak but that said I’ve done plenty or soaked muddy rides since Xmas with warm dry feet
    Happy
