  • The sugar mill in Rafael Freyre, north of Holguin in Cuba was closed around year 2003.
It had a network of narrow gauge lines (760 mm) of about 60 km.
A good number of the lines still exist and are used for local passenger transport with rail buses.
The destinations are: Potrelillo, Jobal, Peluda and La Sierra.
Join me on a trip with rail bus number 50 to La Sierra and back.
Thanks to the Canadian Adolf Hungrywolf we can also get an insight into what it was like to be along these lines in 1999 while the sugar mill was still in operation.
There were seven small Baldwin steam locomotives in use during the harvest in the winter season. The "safra". There could be up to 30 - 40 sugarcane wagons and a caboose in the trains. The tracks had gradients of 3 and 4 % and there were only brakes on the locomotives.
Adolf Hungrywolf was working as a locomotive driver during the harvest in 1999 and has produced a very fine video of almost two hours from the traffic around the sugar mill.
He has contributed with a lot of insights and informations for this video, which was recorded in 2023.
Adolf Hungrywolf has produced some very good videos, and books about the railways in Cuba.
