We Went to London's Happiest Borough

- Croydon was recently named the unhappiest London borough. We went to the certified happiest part of the big smoke to find out exactly what fills Richmonders (Richmondites? Richies?) with such quantifiable joie de vivre. And maybe see what Croydon might learn from it. Hopefully not £7.25 pints.
Thanks to Amanda at Visit Richmond and everyone else we spoke to during our day out from the Cronx. @bigwaft4028Big Waft on the Cronx riddim.
Basically boils down to Richmond being full of upper middle class, enfranchised people and other boroughs being full of poor, disenfranchised people.
You're not wrong, although how it got that way is another question. In Richmond only one person we spoke to, who didn't want to be on camera, said money was the main reason the area is happy... but basically everyone in Croydon has had something to say about the area lacking investment.
Yeah tbf he mentioned it and second that. I worked in Richmond for years and didn't like the vibe or reception personally. 😉 and on a number of occasions heard people talk trash on South Ldn people (Brixton, Heath and that where im from) which has some undertones to say the least.
@@zzztefanos yeah a couple definitely made faces when we said we were from the Cronx 😅
@@CronxWatch ahh the audacity, smh! 😮💨 enjoyed the video mate!
Let me be careful by prefacing my comment by saying I’m from an immigrant background…
Im not from Croydon but see similar issues in my borough (Tower Hamlets). I think rapid increases in the immigration population and an increase in the transient population are likely to blame, at least in part.
Many immigrants are from poor countries where people like them don’t or aren’t able to participate in politics in the same way the woman from Richmond lobbied and petitioned her council. They often don’t want to rock the boat either. In areas like Richmond people like her hold local government to account. You see less of this in other areas of London in my experience. Often poor people don’t have the time to dedicate to things like this as well, they’re too busy keeping their heads above water.
Transient populations (often richer, middle class people) can also contribute to this. People move areas often and don’t put down roots so don’t really feel like they have a stake in the area. If I’m moving out in 6 months, why should I give a fuck if the place is a shithole?
Anyways, those are my thoughts. Perhaps I’m wrong or have overlooked something 😅
It helps to have a lovely river, a big park, lots of greenery, and nice architecture, instead of high rise concrete flats, and poor housing.
That really has an effect on your mental wellbeing. Factors like you mentioned make a difference
It is money, not because money buys you happiness, but money affords you a baseline to be happy with very easily. It isn't impossible to be happy when you don't have a lot of money, its just noticeably far more difficult. Most of these people don't have to stress about how often they can go out, how much meals will cost, will they be able to get their family into good schools etc. A lot of these people also have jobs that afford them more freedom and time, its nice and easy to enjoy the greenery when you haven't worked a horrid 9 hour shift at a soul destroying dead end job and feel like all you want to do is drop dead in your bed. Don't get me wrong I think Richmond is a lovely area and I think more places should have what it offers, I just think some of the answers are quite disingenuous.
Unintentionally so. Just not self-aware enough.
I live in Wimbledon and I rarely go to Richmond and when I drive there I always tell myself I should go there more often but I never do lol
Oooh... I do live in Richmond... and love your video
As a social experiment, move the Home Office to Richmond, build skyscrapers everywhere and fill them up with poor immigrants turning Richmond from the oldest to the youngest borough and gut the town centre leaving only vape shops and empty promises. Richmond is welcoming of immigrants, but only if they are rich and can afford to buy a house for a few million.
I used to live in Richmond borough (specifically Twickenham) it’ll always be the best place in the world. ❤
Awesome stuff, Dave! That was an enjoyable watch! Keep it going!
Very insightful video, spot on with the ending comparisons!
Richmond is the best place in London but like you said, Croydon is the home of Peep Show so you guys win. Great video
haha big up, thanks for your comment!
Because they have all the money, obviously
I like your ghetto microphone with a little sticker on it. That makes me smile.
Also Richmond is happy because it is a monoculture. Not mono-racial, but almost everyone in Richmond shares the same high-trust style of culture regardless of their racial background. Multiculturalism is a failure of an idea that leaves unhappy and disconnected people who don't care about each other, other countries don't have the overriding narrative that America has that allows different cultures to subordinate themselves to a common goal (well, until recently where the narrative has been intentionally destroyed to foster division)
Lived in Richmond for 6 years and really enjoyed it, bit boring and upper middle class but generally nice with some decent pubs and interesting locals. Loved going for a walk up the hill on Sunny mornings. Moved to Twickenham and by comparison hated it ( white middle class, straight, boring AF ) so moved back to West London which I love as I find it a little more real to be honest ( whatever that actually means )
You NEED green spaces or else people are trapped in concrete with nowhere to go!
I live in Richmond and I’m depressed as shit.
Come to Somalia in west London. Bants is great.
No, no come to Finsbury Park & meet the Algerian people
01:19: So, what makes a CronxWatch reporter, standing in the middle of Park Hill Park, such an appealing shot?
As far as the people, they are all right. I much prefer the people past Streatham, maybe around Croydon. The old stock are still, London has changed a lot but a lot of those people haven't changed and it's nice
I am in this
Another banger! 🔥🔥🔥
Big up, glad you enjoyed!
also, big detail everyone leaves out, the borough is around 85% white. Had to be said.
Nice one bruva!
Haha, he's not wrong though eh?!
What makes Richmond better than Croydon? The people, of course!
Richmond always seems sunny and happy ironically
Never forget that Croydon created Dubstep. Anti-War Dub is the official national anthem as of right now - tax the rich to make Croydon sick. Even if Skream has since created some unforgivable Brostep.
nice vid again cronx :D
Big up, glad you're enjoying what we've been making!
I am. I am now stalking your channel page and watching every new video lol
Apparently money doesn't bring you happiness. So, which is it?
Personally, I'd say money doesn't automatically equate to happiness. But not having any money, in our society, is nearly always miserable.
> You're so lucky to have tramlink
Yeah, and when was the last time it was fully operating? Like 2 months ago? Bigup the CR0 massiff, it's not Richmond but we're green, sorta
Big up Dave. Lots of love from Derby. Wana do Chaddesden ina bit?
Jk ❤️
Love to Derbados bro, thanks for watching!
Money and connections with people in power?
Lived in the borough of Richmond for the past 2 years, probably the lowest level of riff raff in the capital. The other great thing is if you live on the far end of the borough you're just a hop, skip and a jump away from being outside of London.
Everyone’s so happy in Richmond, and then we go back to Croydon and in a third of the time we get like 4 passers by that give us the dirtiest looks lmfao
Don't forget the gang signs and the cheeky hello to the camera at the end, gotta love the Cronx!
Even the crak heads in Richmond wake up laughing.
From the title, I thought you were talking about Tower Hamlets just after Khan got re-elected….. 🤔
yeah but croydon has more immigrants
also 250000/500 is 500 not 750?
The pop ups in these videos are not mine they're from sources I used, that was Inside Croydon's headline. insidecroydon.com/2023/12/15/the-cost-of-croydons-heritage-music-trail-750-per-download/
The actual numbers were £350,000 including London authority funding (even worse!) for a total 458 downloads, which works out at £764 per person.
Clicked on this and thought - definitely not Brent mate
Never been to Brent to judge, but this did made make me laugh thanks for the comment!
It's predominantly white area. Of course they're happy.
It's only 'happy' in the sense that Richmond is ultra wealthy and full of multi millionaire Rishi Sunak types who have money to burn and completely divorced from the realities of the world like cost of living, discrimination etc etc. It's like saying Chelsea is a 'happier' borough than the Gaza Strip. Why do you think that is? Really silly clickbait video that shows no understanding of socioeconomic influences.
Thanks for your comment. I spoke several times in the video on economic factors. To say that Richmond is only a happier place because it's rich is to miss the point, which is how did all societal influences combine for it become that way? Why do rich people live there and not somewhere else? Chelsea, to use your example, is wealthier than Richmond by most metrics but not surveyed as happier. These things are worth looking at in my opinion.
As for being silly clickbait, my style is comedic and tongue in cheek mixed with public opinion. If you want super serious in-depth economic analysis of London's boroughs there are other channels for you!
Richmond will be as diverse and colorful as Croydon in a few years or a decade because of mass migration. Enjoy Richmond while it is still huwhite and prosperous.
i grew up in richmond and can say with some authority that it isn't, and was never 'white'. It is, however, affluent. Trying to construe london's social issues as racial, rather than economic in nature is baby brained magical thinking.
@@aaaaaaasssssss3069 Most of the crime commited in London is not by the native Brits but by migrants.
