In 1983, the population was just barely over 100 individuals. In the spring of 2016 we had a great year, 79 new pups, totalling to about 320 seals. It is thought that the immediate, critical threat of extinction would be alleviated if the population would grow over 400. Currently, the target of the seal protection is to get the population grow to over 400 by the year 2020. News of this springs new pups haven't arrived yet, but let's hope it will be as good year as the last one was!
