One of my most-favorite Supers games!
Awesome! Hope this helps you get new players involved! :)
I've been looking for a super hero game and came across Champions and MaM but they were very crunchy and I've been trying to avoid crunchy games since my days with RoleMaster and D&D 3.5. I found this Icons gem and have been skimming through the book and I have to say that so far it seems very simple to pick up and your descriptions helped a little more on how it all works. This is going to be the game I use for my next Superhero session. Thanks!
There are quite a few amazing superhero RPGs out there! I'm so glad you found this option!
It should be clarified that if you tie the TN when hitting someone you only do half your effect value in damage.
Hey there!
I'm Dan - the Line Artist for ICONS. Great video! :D
Thanks!!!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it. You too work well together. : )
Thanks! Glad you found it useful! :)
If anyone has any additional questions on where to find specifics for rules covered in the video (or other videos) please feel free to leave comments on the videos in question and we'll happily give you page references or explanations as able. Thank you all so much for watching and your support!
Thank you for this!
You're very welcome!
Reference Note: The negative die can be rolled by the GM or by the player if the group so chooses. In ICONS first edition, the idea was that the GM never rolled anything. Since that didn't suit some people, the change was made so that the negative die was given to the GM. Do it the way your group feels comfortable.
Thank you for the clarification! I watched this video in conjunction with reading my copy of the Assembled Edition, not being aware of any differences from the first edition, so talking about a 2d6 system _really_ confused me at first lol.
It is a great game. And I have found that character creation is quite a bit faster than 15 mins.
Uhhhh... fantastic tutorial, but you did it for the original ICONS system and not ICONS Assembled Edition. Sounds like you took your notes from the OGC page which contains only the rules for the original ICONS game. There were numerous changes to the system with Assembled Edition, including changes to the Dice Mechanics (no more positive and negative dice), and changes to Qualities (no more Challenges) amongst others.
Thank you for your appreciation of the quality of the video. I assure you, we were using the ICONS Assembled Edition book as we have both the hard copy and the PDF.
The Positive and Negative Dice mechanic can be found on page 18 in tests. You utilize the following formula: Effort (Acting Ability + d6) - Difficulty (Opposing Ability + d6) = Outcome
This is further explained on Icons Assembled Edition page 20, where it has a section on Effort and a section on Difficulty. The section on Difficulty does state that the opposing side would make the Difficulty roll. At the tables that I have been involved the die rolls are all handled by one side instead of making two separate die rolls.
As to the lack of Challenges, I would point you to page 65 of Icons Assembled Edition and "Phase 5: Description" of character creation. In that section towards the end of the paragraph you are asked to provide "challenges for the hero in the present". As was stated in the video, these are "similar to qualities, but they don't have a mechanical representation." It is strictly a flavor aspect used to provide the Game Master with information.
Any other mechanics in the video that you believe to be carry over from the previous edition?
Sincere apologies for the multiple edits to our reply. Hectic morning and we responded in parts as a result. Will try to not have that happen in the future.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
Super handy, thanks
You're very welcome! We'll be doing more systems! :)
I love Icons! Subscribed.

Not sure if it's just me, but this sounds easier to me than Mutants and Masterminds
Yes, ICONS is an easier game to play than M&M. :) Not just you.
It's certainly less complicated. Like any other "easier" or "rules light" system, that just means the GM makes more decisions about details on the fly. For some GMs that is not actually easier, and they instead find picking up rules and options a breeze.
So damage isn't randomized at all? Like 7 strength guy knows he does exactly 7 damage on a punch every time unless some of it is resisted?
Correct!
I have been checking out this overview of ICONS Assembled and the one you did for Supers Revised. Which superhero RPG would you say is your favorite overall? Supers Revised or ICONS Assembled or some other game like Marvel Heroic Roleplaying or something?
Any idea?
Oops, sorry for the delayed reply! Holidays have kept us busy! I'd be happy to discuss with you in depth the pros and cons of each system if you'd like to jump on BwK's discord! discord.me/BwK
I find it is better to gear towards what YOU would look for, our favorites may not be yours.
@@daddystabz sent you a friend request so I can invite you.
@@BabieswithKnives I was never able to find an invite. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Are you able to compare/contrast what you like and do not like about each one and then say which is your favorite overall?
We're out of town for 2 days. B or I will compose something proper to you when we return.
