  • Tuesday September 11 2018 at 10.13. The 9.45 Leeds to London Kings Cross (12.01) train. This crossing is just over a mile south of Balne Lowgate LC and just over a mile north of Moss LC on the East Coast Main Line. It had gates until 2015. There were 6 crossings in a row along here all with manned gates. The railway could have easily fitted barriers 40 years ago. They must have decided that it was better to have crossing keepers on the main line and fit barriers at quieter level crossings instead. Its possible that the deciding factor was that there is far less chance of a suicide at a manned crossing. Closing the main line for any reason costs a lot in compensation. About 120 people live in Fenwick. Railway maintenance staff were here as can be seen.
