Your comments about Sohyang surpassing (or at least settling in among) her vocal idols (Whitney, Mariah, Celine) was very apt. Because Sohyang is not commercially oriented (and she has great respect for the ladies she looked up to) people often sleep on how good she actually is. Like you said, her control is on a whole other level even from the three. The range of colours and dynamics and her flexibility and DAT MIX (her true superpower). She's also very adventurous with her vocals yet appropriate to the song, and like you perfectly expressed, her pain, joy, and desire to truly connect with the hearts of the audience carry across convincingly. Her version of Whitney's "I have nothing" is my definitive version, period, as much as I truly do love Whitney at her peak.
Finally! PS: Fun fact - she actually did one octave arpeggio to that Bb5 (Bb4-Bb5) and not to mention the D6/Eb6 head voice. Also, she admitted that this song is the hardest song she ever sung, the second being Bridge over Troubled Water.
I know that most of the vocal coaches out there always talk about Sohyang and her amazing vocal technique which is bar none but it was refreshing to hear you talk about the passion and the emotion she puts into her songs that's the part that gets me she hits me straight in the heart every time she is a gift from God lets enjoy her while we can!

Sohyang really is one of a kind. On par with Mariah or Whitney for sure, but distinctly herself. No one can touch her when it comes to mixed voice and head voice and her ability to arrange such moving songs and sing so beautifully so consistently even in the face of continual major health issues is literally incredible. She’s just an inspiring woman, an extraordinary vocalist, and a transcendently emotive performer.

It’s legit just because they both hit high notes. Reality is Sohyang is a belter/head voice master, and Mariah is whistles and stuff. They’re different and only compared really because they can hit high notes
But she does get tired, she just doesn't show it until afterwards lol, true professional. You should watch her post-performance on immortal songs. She catches her breath like crazy and once she was shaking and lightheaded. When she gives it 110% like on these shows she can probs do at most 2 or 3 songs. She's the best but still human :D

ven without understanding the Korean section of the song, you could feel she possibly singing her story , her ups and downs, struggles, self-doubts before she arrived at her current state of being. You could feel through her expressions and hand movements. You could feel she's relating something personal to the audience in the talking section even without knowing what's she saying. Not knowing exactly what it's about yet could feel it's about one's life journey through the ups and downs of the tempo of the song. When a singer did this to you in a foreign language and still bring you on an emotional roller coaster, that shows how powerful the song and her vocals are.

I remember her saying that when she first started, she will come back after singing and hear people saying that she hit some difficult high notes, which she wasn't even aware of. And of course, Sohyang is a perfectionist hence she practices very very hard.

Good to see your react to her. If I may suggest another, you should look into one of her good friends and vocal equivalent, Park Ki Young. She may not have quite as much belt control but she easily has a lot more versatility in styles. And her sustain is out of this world.

Comparison with Mariah doesn't do justice to both of them. Just american media wanted to compare her to the best they have and that seemed to be Mariah. Sohyang inherited a lot of rnb style from Mariah though, which appear in some weird unnecessary riffs and runs, but as the time progresses she stopped including them all over the place. Also Beth, there are a couple of literally godlike performances from Sohyang (i mean every performance is insanely good, but there are godlike ones) - Fate, Dear Love, Home (both original from KOMS show), Where are you, As i live, I always miss you, Dream. They are korean, so you better find videos with subs. Fate and I always miss you are Lee Sun Hee's original songs, she is an incredible korean singer as well. Cheers!

Comparison with Mariah doesn't do justice to both of them. Just american media wanted to compare her to the best they have and that seemed to be Mariah. Sohyang inherited a lot of rnb style from Mariah though, which appear in some weird unnecessary riffs and runs, but as the time progresses she stopped including them all over the place.
Also Beth, there are a couple of literally godlike performances from Sohyang (i mean every performance is insanely good, but there are godlike ones) - Fate, Dear Love, Home (both original from KOMS show), Where are you, As i live, I always miss you, Dream. They are korean, so you better find videos with subs. Fate and I always miss you are Lee Sun Hee's original songs, she is an incredible korean singer as well.
